I just played through it for the first time during quarantine because of James Willems from Funhaus saying it was his favorite game. It's such an absolute GEM of a game. The gameplay is still so damn fun and interesting and the overall experience is charming!
I have gifted this game on steam somewhere around 20 times now. I just want all of my friends to play it. Psychonauts is the pinnacle of creative writing in video games.
What a nostalgia trip. I baught the original as a teenager purely on the recommendation and hype of X-Play and their coverage leading up to release. I had no idea it sold so poorly initially, but Double Find always finds a way to keep going.
@@KurtIndovina It goes without saying, but I love the video essays you've been making since you joined GS. Keep it up, these are always so intriguing and informative!
Well, after Double Fine got the distribution rights from Majesco, they opened the game up to multiple platforms. It flopped initially, but being released on the various digital stores gave it a it of new players who loved it. They then made the Indigo-go campaign to see how much the sequel was wanted. As you can tell people wanted it. Psychonauts is a cult classic that had a second chance to make an impression with a wider fan base.
I recently replayed the game and it still holds up, and after having taken both a psychology course and philosophy course in college, I discovered certain things I didn't as a kid.
I just played this game for the first time last week and man what a fun game, so much character and humor. I can't wait for the sequel, shouldn't be too long.
The fact that this game is getting a sequel 16 years later gives me hope for a possible Brutal Legend 2 as well. Never played the first PsychoNauts but am just starting it, but I absolutely loved Brutal Legend. A sequel to that would be amazing.
I recently started playing it for the first time (bought it like a week before it was added to game pass, annoyingly) and I gotta say I love it. It totally shows it’s age but I completely agree with the points in the video about it’s charm, concepts and characters. This is one game that would dramatically improve with a substantial remake and I would be here for it. Bring on Psychonauts 2!
I’m so glad this one is being hyped up. Independent of everything else the first game is finally becoming a little more recognizable, getting at least a little more of the attention it deserves. Damn game shaped my childhood.
Holy shit. I had no idea how poorly Psychonauts sold its first year, but I guess I feel kinda special knowing I was likely one of the first 100,000 people to play it then.
Bought it at launch. I remember reading the upcoming releases on a print-out at Electronics Boutique. Psychonauts caught my eye immediately. I went home and researched it before I finally stole an OXM demo-disc insert from 7/11 🤫. I did the same for Conker, Jade Empire, and Chaos Theory. All straight classics, but I'd put Psychonauts at the top in retrospect.
I love how psychonauts is getting the reconogitzion it deservs . The story , the character , the gameplay . Do you ever see a game about psychics spyes and mental trauma ? Me no , and it rlly surpised me the amount of details they put in this game , and about character devploment we have dr loboto : in the 1 game he apperd only as a enemy more , in ror we see his past and he become understable and even if pn2 is not out yet , i bet he's gonna become a important character , and not to mention his relaisonship with the coach . It's clear that im psyched for the sequel right?
75%done for my first time ever playing it. Wanted to get hyped for the sequel and just see if I would be into it's gameplay. Yeah this game is epic! So stoked they put this out on Game Pass to pump up the new Sequel!!
I find it funny we get a sequel at a time where I finish my psychonaut journey only to find out the end is the beginning, and now I even have the chance to play the first, and the disclosure is astounding, I definitely would not have gotten the message as a 9 year old child.
I got Psychonauts circa 2016-2017 for free on Steam, I thought it was just one of those no-name indie games you get for free and never play. However, the unique art style got me, and after trying it I fell in love with it. The controls feel natural on PC version. Other than that, everything is as you said - brilliant. Will definitely buy the sequel.
Couldn't agree more. Some of the mechanics can be a bit clunky by today's standards, but for the most part, it holds up very well and it is definitely one of the most creative games ever made and it oozes style, charm, and wit.
I would love a remastering of this game. Not a full reworking and remake. Keep the game largely as it is, but touch it up for modern eyes. Maybe even use the new engine they're using for Psychonauts 2. Make the platforming less stiff, fix a few niggling issues here and there, that sort of thing.
One of the best 3d platfomers I've ever played. If only they remade it or there was a full game HD texture mod because the textures are the main issue playing it nowadays.
I have tried to get into this game like 3 times, but I could never get past the dated graphics and controls, until I pressed forward. Once you get past the first two levels and unlock more of Raz's moveset, the game becomes an utter joy from start to finish.
3rd favorite game of all-time! Recently played it all the way through again and this time got completely involved with the other campers and picked up on all the narratives I missed. Great time all around.
Same here, I was looking to originally buy it ages ago when I saw that it was one of the few OG Xbox titles but now thanks to gaempass, I can play it with no extra charge and it's been amazing since
I’m so glad we’re getting a sequel I just replayed the original, it was rough but still enjoyable and funny af ! Some of the puzzles were wierd af with not enough clues tho, but that’s just old school game design
Honestly I'm playing this again after 10 years and I don't feel like it looks bad at all. Except cutscenes. Game itself looks perfectly fine. Double fine.
Bro! No love ever the Fred level design and the shrinking down, then being able to see Fred and Nepoleon playing the game while on the game board! Unforgivable
I got this game through a Humble Bundle, and never really gave it any attention at all. Didn’t play it, didn’t even download it. Then I start hearing about it all over the place, especially since the sequel recently being released. I saw Charlie praise this game, I seen others praise this game and it being a part of their childhood. After a while of hearing about it, I figured ‘Why not? I’ll give it a shot.’ I’m currently on the Milkman Conspiracy level right now and I absolutely ADORE this game. It is well worth your time, even if I haven’t really gotten that far into it. I know the rest of the game will be a treat. If you are currently reading this right now and are on the fence or something, get the game and support these developers. I can’t wait to beat it, and nab a copy of Psychonauts 2. Honestly the ‘clunky’ parts of this game don’t bother me a bunch. The combat is a little janky and so is platforming from here to there, but with what they did I think it, in a way, gives it its own charm among how the rest of the game is. It is really something to experience.
I hope Nintendo doesn't steal ideas from Psychonauts and make it into a 3D Mario game. I dunno about you guys but I noticed that Nintendo steals ideas: -Saving the princess = Repunzel -Mario Maker = Little Big Planet -Mario Galaxy = Ratchet and Clank -Mario Odyssey = Crash of the Titans -Mario Kart 8 = Crash Nitro Kart -Mario vs Donkey Kong 2 = Lemmings I like playing Mario games to a certain extent, but I can't be the only one who noticed
Just've finished it. Omg, it's really great game, I believe one of the best I ever played. Thank Xbox Series S for a great backward compatibility 💗💗 And I have known about Psychonauts since 2005 from Russian gamer magazine Igromania, lol
Literally just finished the game for the first time about 20 minutes ago, and I have to say I'm in love. I can't wait to play the 2nd one tomorrow. I'm definitely going to remember this game for a very long time. 10/10 game for sure.
I'm playing it right now for first time... the Meat circus is too hard. But I don't care. The lake moster mind is maybe one of the best stage I've played in my life.
I finally played it on GPX and beat it 100%. Had to buy it for the original Xbox for my collection as well. Brilliant game and I can't wait for the sequel!
I always thought Psychonauts is severely underrated. Thanks for giving me some hype so I can play it again :-) going with my copy on the original Xbox with component cables running at 480p
i played this game first time in my channel im almost in the end of the game i have to say they dont make games like this anymore im just doing walks and enjoying the world
Wow this looks much better than the ps5 version. Y’all actually got an HD upscale same thing with Bully Scholarship Edition. But, it’s cool we still get the originals I guess
god now that the sequel is out i have got to play it. i never got to since i grew up in a household where "girls play with dolls, not video games" so unfortunately i only consumed it from watching my brother play, but now that i'm older i wanna play it for myself since i'm nostalgic for it.
As someone who just played thru this game for the very 1st time after i saw it on Game Pass, i agree with everything he said. I can see why those who love it to death do so but i can also see it's flaws. My personal favorite thing in the game was Raz and Lily's awkward "relationship".
I loved the style, the atmosphere, the heart, and the characters. However, I found a some of the puzzles unclear and the plat forming very awkward. Maybe I’m just bad at it but for a lot of the game I was very frustrated and wondered why I was even playing. That being said I finished it and found it memorable and satisfying.
