Unfortunately, Billie was in a year long relationship (ages 16-17) with a man in his early 20s. Nobody even knew she was dating anyone until her documentary came out (his face was blurred and he was given the alias of “Q”). Her 2nd full length album Happier Than Ever, of which the title song and video you already did a great reaction to, speaks a lot about this relationship and the various stages of going through it and coming out of it to try to heal. Not only was she underage but he was emotionally manipulative, reckless, and just all in all treated her very poorly. Talk about adding insult to injury. All of this was a major contributing factor to her becoming extremely depressed, to the point of having suicidal thoughts. She openly started speaking about the fact that she’d gone through an abusive and toxic relationship around the age of 18-19, before Happier Than Ever was released. This was actually the first single off of that album, which I really commend her for. She went for substance and using her enormous platform to speak directly to current victims of abuse, survivors, the many industries, including the music industry, that are a breeding ground for this kind of abuse of power, and the actual perpetrators of this kind of behaviour. The fact that she speaks directly to the abusers in the chorus is particularly effective “How dare you? How could you? Would you only feel bad if they found out/killed your contract? If you could take it all back, would you?” In the song “Happier Than Ever” she says “Didn’t pay any mind to my mother or friends so I shut them all out for you cause I was a kid.” Btw, she directed this video, the one for “Happier Than Ever”, as well as several others you’ve reacted to. Before she started directing, I believe the first time was when she was 16 or 17, she was heavily involved in the creative process for all her music videos. Both Billie and her brother/best friend Finneas, who co-writes some of her songs, sings background vocals, plays instruments, and produces all of Billie’s music, have synesthesia, which she has said heavily influences all of her visuals, from music videos, to album artwork, to her personal style, to the lighting used on stage during live performances. She’s struggled with depression, anxiety, and Tourette’s syndrome from early ages. She’s dealt with an abusive and toxic relationship, stalkers, the violent death of a very close friend (RIP XXXtentacion) being sexualized while underage (leading to her making a conscious decision to wear hugely oversized clothing during her teenage years), body shaming (once she turned 18 she started showing moderately more skin and was slut shamed and had her body mocked mercilessly…you can’t win). She also has a background in dancing, which is very evident from how she naturally moves to her music, right down to very precise facial movements, but any career she was aiming for was cut short when she had serious hip and, later, knee injuries at the age of 12 which continue to affect her and cause her pain. She is currently only 20 years old and has won 7 Grammys, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar (amongst so many other awards and nominations). She has been through so much at such a young age and she still shows a degree of self awareness, maturity, compassion, humour, and an utterly unique approach to art in it’s many forms. It makes me so happy to know there are young artists out there who appeal to vast audiences as well as being hugely popular with a young demographic, that break down stigmas of mental health and physical disabilities, open up discussions about body image, toxic relationships, abuse, substance abuse etc and who seem to truly value being honest and expressing themselves in a way that’s authentic to them while still being conscious of their own power and platform. Sorry for the absolute NOVEL I wrote disguised as a comment. I value not only your reactions and insight but the entire idea behind why this channel exists in the first place. The snake is called Archie. He's an Anaconda, which makes him a constrictor. Billie spent some days with him so they could 'get to know each other' so to speak. People claimed it was CGI but they clearly don't know Billie. She does NOT mess around.

On tour, the entire crowds (like arena-crowds) would always scream "How dare you?!" Obviously, this song is not just about her. And she's always been fully aware of that .

The snake is real, but the parts where he coils around her neck are done with CGI. Also, I think this song isn’t so much about personal past relationships, but more as way of bringing awareness to what happens when people in the industry abuse their power and take advantage of others.

The snake is symbolic of her previous relationship of how the relation ship slowly constricted her until she couldn't breathe. At least thats how i see it.

So happy that this happened! I suggested it after one of the first nf videos you posted! So happy to see it!! This song affects me personally and relates to me! I actually have used it to help me kind of come to terms and work through understanding the grooming I experienced from my teacher. She is speaking about adult men who are placed in power positions in young girls lives(teachers, directors, agents, neighbors, family, therapists, church etc…) and who then take advantage! For me these lyrics were the ones that hit me hard! “She thought you were her hero, you played the part but you ruined her in a year.”-the reason for me is because the teacher was a hero figure in my life. I only had him for a year and that was all it took. “She was sleeping in your clothes but now she’s got to get to class.”-for me just explains how abusive this was it wasn’t a relationship. It was manipulation. “Will you only feel bad if they find out?” And “would you only feel bad if it turns out that they kill your contract.”-These two hit hard for me because he never felt he did anything wrong. “I thought that I was special.”-they can make you feel like your the only one. Only to find out there were others. I met with one of the other girls and talked. We had no idea that he was the same with both of us. “You made me feel like it was my fault. You were the devil. You lost your appeal.”-to this day it was her fault(the other girl who accidentally came forward). He likes to continually place blame on her. He is in his 40s she is 18 and this was 3 years ago that if came out and 5-6 years since it happened. For me this song isn’t just about a relationship because there is no relationship there is only abuse, manipulation, and control! Another song I recommend that I feel goes a long with this is Alec Benjamin’s Death of a Hero!!

I haven't watched the video again since it was released... too much anxiety of snakes. I love the song though! As of my understanding, the song could be about people (mostly men) in position of power within the industry, but it is most likely targeted to a much broader audience that can relate to these relationships in their everyday lifes. The snake on the other hand is real, that much came across by watching her instagram stories back then. I love seeing you react to Billie again, Tom!
