well people tend to connect this song with headlights for obvious reasons and I do see it suggested a lot for reactors especially after they did Cleanin out my closet. It's like Kim and Bad Husband. I'm a bit torn on which version he should do because the music video is awesome but it does cut out part, though to be fair it's not a verse (unlike Beautiful), I think it's just a bridge or something. So maybe the best thing would be if he'd check out both but I'm not sure if that makes sense. Also I forgot something: Eminem frequently mentions older songs and albums so that could also help with identifying where he is at somewhat. Especially on Recovery he mentions Relapse a lot (although in a negative way).

Ronnie was his uncle, they were very close in age and he introduced Eminem to hip hop and rap. He committed suicide because of a break up. His mom sued Em for 10mil dollars so that what's he's referring to with "how dare you take what you didn't help me to get". Also, you have to do Headlights!! It's part 2 of this song, his perception of things after he's matured some more and how he feels about his mom now. Cleaning out my closet is from 2002. Headlights is from 2013:)

15:49 - Ronnie was Eminem's uncle (2 months older); from his mom's side and they were close. As you may remember from Stan, "I had a friend k!ll himself over some b!tch that didn't want him," that was Ronnie (12/14/91). Eminem's grandma (Ronnie's mom) claims that Eminem's mom, Debby, said that 'Ronnie would be alive today but you weren't home to take a phone call. Ronnie called and asked to speak to Marshall' but he wasn't home. The family claims that Ronnie never called and that Debby was just trying to place the blame on Eminem.

Years later he never performs this song anymore and nearly hates that he recorded it after getting clean and realizing from a clean/mature position what sort of a position his mother was in. There is just so much pain in this. I was abandoned by a mentally ill mother too. I think he wouldn’t have put all of this out there, but his mom sued him for $10 million for defamation in an earlier track and because Marshall would help her financially and she was being evicted from her mobile home. She went on talk shows to say that Marshall was too spoiled and made herself the victim. She never mentioned that her younger son was put in long term foster care due to medical abuse/neglect. Nathan, the younger half brother bounced around group homes with anger issues until Marshall filed for custody of him and eventually adopted him. Marshall was badly beaten by a middle school bully, he ended up in a coma, his mom sued the school and according to court records, she kept him drugged up on Valium and Xanax to make the “brain damage” seem worse in order to get more in lawsuits and welfare/social security disability. He had to recover from the brain injury through that time, and couldn’t really do well in school. He dropped out after failing 9th grade twice. So, he has reasons to be angry. I can relate because I’m the same age and also have a white trash family.

I hope you do Headlights by Eminem soon. I want to wait until you've done both before I share your reactions to both with my own mother. I'm a 45-year-old mom myself who survived childhood abuse and neglect and am finally making progress with an incredible trauma informed therapist. And part of that entailed going no contact for almost 2 years. I re-initiated contact last year. My mom, having realized that I won't put up with certain things anymore , has actually been making attempts at modifying her behavior toward me and accepting the boundaries I've created for the most part. And I've been able to occasionally have somewhat productive conversations with her about things. But, it's still obvious that she doesn't understand how much the past affects how I function as an adult. And you just explained it so well. But the song Headlights was written several years after Cleaning Out My Closet. Eminem was able to grow and mature and gain more perspective on how his mom's own experiences and trauma shaped her behavior and his experience of childhood. So, I want to wait until I can share your commentary on both songs before sharing them with her. I absolutely've been loving this channel & can't wait for mores

Em's honesty is one of the things that makes him so memorable. As long as he's rapping as Eminem and not Slim Shady you're going to hear a version of his truth, whether it's something that happened or a twisted fantasy he might have. He also repeatedly said this was his therapy which you can really see. Eventually got a real one which was for the best. Headlights is a good follow-up to this one. It's about 10 years down the line and THAT one is probably a part of his recovery.

Also the “took the bullets out of that gun” line is referencing his felony charge. He was charged after assaulting a club bouncer when he saw Kim (baby momma) kissing the bouncer. I love that you can bring in a psych background to this song. Most people can only say "wow his mom was terrible," but you can bring forward Munchausen's and a great interpretation from a psychology perspective. I remember using this as an example for a presentation in college on Munchausen's By Proxy and loved hearing you explain how that disorder works (the caregiver seeking attention via another person's medical issues). You have such a refreshing take on Eminem and digging into the psychology of him using what he has poured out in his music. Keep up the great work!

The follow-on to this song is "Headlights" where you can see that he has matured in his view of his mother and their relationship, and it's his apology/acceptance song, it's very poignant and regretful. He says he cringes at this song now when he hears it and he doesn't play it at his shows anymore. I relate to that so much. I had a horrible relationship with my mother and in my teenage/very young adult years, I was full of resentment and rage, I wanted to hurt her like I felt hurt. I used to listen to this song and relate it to my own feelings about her. Now, I am in my "Headlights" phase. Comparing these two songs will really show his emotional and psychological growth and maturity.

Eminem is one of my favorite artists bc he is able to be very vulnerable. While some people may find his vulnerability to be unnecessary, it has helped me through a lot. My childhood was very similar to his, so this song is extremely relatable, especially how hurt he was that his mom wouldn’t admit that she wasn’t a good mom. It’s really hard to heal from childhood trauma when parents deny it even happening, or minimizing the child’s feelings.

This song actually scared me a lot. I think I was around13 or 14 year sold when this came out and since English isn't my native language, I didn't understand anything. So it was a pretty aggressive sounding song with domestic abuse in the video and a menacing beat to me. Do you actually check out the uncensored versions of this songs after the reaction? Because especially at the end of this song, he said some pretty nasty things. Btw I don't know how much you are informed about Em's history but here are some things to keep in mind which can help put the songs into a timeline: he did get more and more tattoos during his career. So in the early days when his daughter wasn't born yet/was a baby, he didn't have her tattooed on his right shoulder yet. Those are mostly the days of his first successfull album, The Slim Shady LP. I think he has that tattoo starting from his next album, The Marshall Mathers LP. The other big one is his tattoo that shows the name of Proof, his friend from D-12. It's on his left underarm and it should be there sometime after Encore, his forth main album. That's also the time of his first big hiatus when he had the most trouble with drugs. The other thing to keep in mind is his hair. First he was blonde and shaven in his career. Then after Encore he had dark hair sometimes in his videos (and the whole time during the movie 8 mile). He had blonde hair on some of the songs on Relapse and dark hair on the others. I think on Recovery he mostly had dark hair and on The Marshall Mathers LP2 he had mostly blonde hair again. Then with Revival he pretty much stuck with the dark hair and introduced us to his beard lol. And that's the present so if you see him with dark hair and a beard, then that song is pretty recent (it has to be at least from 2017), I don't know how much this made sense but I wanted to write it down, maybe it'll help lol.

Parents are parents, true but i can relate to this song. Both my parents rejected me hated me left me to starve, beat me with everything they could find i still remember when i was 6 years old and my mom locked me in the room with her so nobody could come to save me and she took a big knife and told me she will kill me and started to cut herself it was so much for me to take back then even now if i see blood i get dizy cause of that. My mom called me crazy she called me a demon also said she wish i was'nt even born. I hate to talk about my life but i'm 32 years now and i still can't deal with the stress and depression started drinking at the age of 14 got mixed with the wrong friends and it brought me in al sorts of trouble. My great grandma raised me fed me till she died she was the only one looking after me. Ended up in a heavy motorcycle accedent cause i remember when i asked my mom for food and she told me no so ended up taking my bike drove off to a fast food restaurant and ended up crashing into a truck on my way there my back never recovered from the accedent till this day i have back issues. Family hated me cause i was diffrent and rejected me since i started following Christ. I have a family of my own now and a little girl she is the reason i stopped drinking cause she told me many times: daddy stop drinking you will get drunk and pass out again, and hearing that from a 4 year old broke my heart and i'm trying everything to give her a better life and a life i never had, but it's so hard to forget the past!

I am speechless. And I am so sorry that every grown up person around you let you down.(except for your your great grandmother) Because some of them _must have seen & known that you were abused, but didn't intervene..._ Hugs. Big internet hugs. ❤

... probably the coolest, most interesting concept for a channel *EVER*. This came out when i was very small and it let me realize that my mother's abuse wasnt my fault. A lot of pain, but at least i knew it wasnt me.

great video! “headlights” by eminem is like the sequel to this song, it’s him apologizing for this song and other songs where he dissed her and how him and her kinda made up, he also heavily regrets “cleanin out my closet” and he doesn’t even play it at concerts anymore

Ronnie was his uncle, but he was almost his age so they were very close and he Eminem's best friend at that time. Ronnie committed suicide in 1991. Pls react to "Headlights" also by Eminem, it's his apology letter to his mother.

A lot of us went through this as a child. I can't remember a single day that my father didn't beat me. My mother reminded me every day how worthless I am. I remember her looking me in the eye when I was 8 and telling me that she wished she had aborted me. From then on, that became a daily lesson. My brother and sister however, walked on water apparently. neither of them ever went through any of the shit I had to deal with. And it wasn't just my parents who did it. My aunts, uncles, and cousins were on the "torture her" bandwagon. The only person in my life that ever loved me in any way was my paternal grandmother. But she didn't know the meaning of the word "hate". She loved everyone, and was the kindest woman who ever walked this earth.

This song definitely helped me get some of my emotions out about my mother, she was abusive and narcissistic and she truly ruined my life mainly from mental abuse she caused. I related a lot during this whole song, trying so hard to fix the issues that are causing her to become abusive that you get so tired that it becomes so hard to hold any form of love for her. I hear a lot about how a mother’s love is unique and how everyone needs a mother’s love and it sucks to think that I never and probably will never know what the true love of my mother feels like. Pardon the novel

I never knew the Munchausen syndrome by proxy thing was real but someone actually posted a report that was at the trial of when she tried to sue him for slander. From all the interviews and people talking about em, everything in this song is factual and not exaggerated. He did have a follow up to this song now hes older called headlights. He regrets making this song. After going through addiction himself, he kinda saw how it wasnt fully in her control how she acted. You should check it out.

When I was younger I know my mom took her far share of beatings just so I could go to the psych. I was always told by my dad not to talk about abuse b/c it could be worse and I knew my dad didn't threaten; he made promises. I was more concerned my dad would lose his job as a correctional officer tho. My mom was my first steps to mental health just sorry she went through so much pain to get me there. Great vid doc! Much love as always! So glad you give some thoughts of mental health along the way!

I’m not sure if anyone else has suggested “Drug Ballad” yet but that’s another must listen song from Eminem, especially for that 3rd verse. I’ve never heard anything that so accurately captures the feeling of being young and caught up in addiction/excessive substance use.

When I was a teen this song and numb by Linking Park were my anthems, I had to go no contact with my mother 2 years ago due to her not respecting boundaries again. I know Eminem hates this song but man its so therapeutic for me on those dark days when I have all this hate for my own mom. I just wish I could have a proper relationship with her but sadly know that won't happen.

Am really enjoying your take on music - thank you for sharing these reactions! I’m seeing a lot of recommendations for Headlights and Beautiful but a different one that could have interest is ‘Beautiful Pain’ with Sia. I have PTSD and to me this track is a beautiful description of post- traumatic growth that I found helped my own healing. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this if you get the chance as it’s a very different type of soul- bearing and a different stage of personal growth.

"Leaving Heaven" is the song Eminem wrote after the death of his father And in "Mockingbird", Em talks to his children about how he tries to treat them better than what he went through I think both could be interesting.
