The line when he says “I’m f’d up, but I ain’t as f’d up as you” is crazy because he’s talking to himself. Like he’s saying his sober self is more messed up than his drunken self. Possibly feeling like his need to be wasted before he can look back on perceived failures and be honest about them, is having a real impact on who he is and his ability to function as a “normal” person.

This is the most brutal, and accurate, description of major depression I've ever heard/seen in any medium. Thankfully I've never had suicidal ideation, but I've frequently wondered why I haven't. It's the kind of honesty that's hard to convey to a therapist, and he released it as a track. You said listen to positive music in a depressive episode- I listen to this track, because it tells me I'm not alone and depression isn't a sign of failure.
@kentekuzan

you should also check out solace by earl sweatshirt it might even capture it better than this masterpiece
@tommarren3809
@tommarren3809 2 года назад
@@kentekuzan I feel like Solace is a better depiction of the experience of being in a depressive episode, but I know I'm depressed. The real experience I have with depression is the impotent rage at knowing 'I'm just stuck in my head' but not being able to do anything about it here and now, and I don't think Solace has the anger part really covered. Not to say the song is bad or anything, I do like the production and it is a more honest depiction of depression than we normally see. It's just that when I'm in a depressive episode, I know I'm being irrational and just need to 'shake myself out of it,' but can't, hence anger and frustration. I don't really hear that in Earl's track.

This is one of my favorite Kendrick songs, and has been for a long time. My therapist calls this voice, the more negative, self-hating, self-abusive voice, the "narrator." She calls the more positive, loving, friendly, confident voice the "ally." Kendrick's song "u" is about the narrator. His song "i" is about the ally.
@billbill6094
@billbill6094 Год назад
Yeah, this actually happened to Kendrick, where he locked himself in a hotel and seriously considered suicide. However, this entire album was about opposites, yin and yang almost. The song "I" came after this, and it was about where he was after. About how he loved himself deeply, and not for any superficial reasons like money and acclaim or because he had accomplishments to flex. That he loves himself for who and what he is, the very core of his being. A complete 180 from letting the events in the world cut into him to seeing all the destruction around him and still going through life with a genuine smile.

9:35 i feel like hes not talking about just "leaving his hood" Its more about all the people he left behind. He grew up with these people, and suffered along side of them. And its like ofcourse he did the right thing, being able to elevate his hood and city. The part that really gets him is the family that her couldnt elevate with him. He made it big and was living the life, but in the meanwhile his family was still in the trenches. The person who died wasnt his brother, in blood, but in struggle. He made that promise to watch him, then went on tours made money and partied while he was getting shot in another gang beef. And even after that he didnt even go to see him, thinking he was good. And then he has to look the older brother in the eyes and tell him he failed to keep his promise. its honestly heartbreaking.

I hope you read these comments. So I am closely cut from the same fabric as Kendrick. Leaving the ghetto, which is what Compton is as well as my childhood grounds, which I venomously call a war zone, and leaving others behind, THEY GUILT YOU because they are also miserable and want to escape. It is easy to blame another for your pain. I still have relatives who now grown try to pass blame for why their lives didn’t go the way they felt it should. They feel that you, the one who escaped, should have saved them too. I didn’t get therapy, well I guess I did but from God, so I do no longer absorb guilt for saving myself. I love that Kendrick is vulnerable enough to pour his heart and truths into his music. But don’t analyze who he is TODAY off “ one song” lol. There is redemption. After you heal, you share the struggle so folks know where you came from. I think he has healed and moved on. Losing your best friend AND your best friend’s brother whilst away, on the road, in a safe environment, doing music, so what “you” love to do, need to do, can cloud one with guilt, especially while grieving that lost. Carrying the weight of trying to succeed so ultimately you can at least save your family by moving them out the hood/ghetto is such a heavy cross to bear. But he did achieve this goal. There is an interview about it.

To really get the full impact of this song u need the whole album. When u hear the music shifting from one ear too the other that’s meant to represent him self destructing and his mind racing. The housekeeping part connects to the poem which he reads through the album “I remember screaming in a hotel room, the evils of Lucy all around me” which this exact song is about. This song is just beautiful man. When you picture him in the hotel room, on top of the world with everything he’s wanted but his self hatred and survivors guilt just snowballs in his mind. The things he brings up even though I can’t relate to him at all he just articulates it so well. He shares his perspective so amazingly. The whole thing of making it out of Compton but seeing the people u grew up succumb to the environment around him. U may know there wasn’t a lot u could do but even though your aware of that fact it doesn’t change how much it weighs on u. It just doesn’t seem right. Making it out of poverty, getting a ton of wealth, being beloved by the culture but seeing those u grew up with suffer.

That's something that I have always found the best about Kendrick is how he changes his voice has based on the emotion that he's trying to express and that's why I really want you to do swimming pools.... I love lyrical artists and I think Em, Kendrick and Nas are the best

The official video for this is titled “God is gangsta” which is this song followed by another “for sale” ...The video is raw and very emotional. Kendrick’s performance really does the song justice and makes it that much better.

You need too do more Kendrick (kishas song, sing about me, letter too death, even the art of pure pressure) I watch reaction videos for deep music Nd that's about it so believe me those songs would be great too hear also not my Kendrick (2 cups by young pappy) is the deepest song I have ever heard it's about his friend that got killed in a shooting where he was the target anyways I rly like ur videos I just want you too do deeper songs tbh but keep up the great content
