Ahh the HOA. Who doesn't love paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to live in a community that requires you to pay an extra monthly fee to allow people to tell you what you can and cannot do to your house and/or property.
@DansVlog
@DansVlog 6 лет назад
Ahh the City Code Enforcer... I know exactly what you mean. Pay so much money for a home and then pay thousands a year in city and county taxes to be told you can’t leave unregistered cars in the driveway or let your lawn hide rats!!! Those bastards
@timsukits8166
@timsukits8166 6 лет назад
Your point here is not lost on me. I get it. Property taxes help pay for public schools, maintenance of roads and parks, government administration costs, police, libraries, public safety and municipal allocations. It all serves a purpose. They also aren't so strict as to need their permission to paint a certain color or plant flowers. What does an HOA fee cover? In certain communities, it actually covers the cost of lawn maintenance, which is nice...I can see the money at work. This community obviously doesn't do the upkeep with the HOA fees, so what is the money going to? You're paying a board of people to hold tighter regulations on you and give them the power to hold liens on your property and foreclose on your house.
@DansVlog
@DansVlog 6 лет назад
You think they aren’t strict like an HOA. I watched my neighbor get cited and lose in court 2 violations by code enforcement. An old shed in backyard behind a fence was no longer “safe” and the carport was a tripping hazard due to having things on the floor (lawn mowers, raked etc). For every scarey story someone has for a volunteer to live in HOA, there are just as many scarey stories of code enforcement citations. That is the point. And Tim, I don’t want to insult you… But how is anybody supposed to take you seriously when you’re judging an entire HOA community on one lawn being in violation? Our fees which total less than $60 a month go to the pool and a security cameras at the front entrance. The clubhouse and the maintenance of the common grounds. It also goes to the large lakes that act as run off for rainwater in our HOA managed and maintained drainage system. We do not pay city taxes here we are not in the city. We live here voluntarily and we appreciate the clean streets, the pool and the parks our community provides for us. Comes with a cost tho... no broke down cars on blocks and house colors need to be neutral colors... not a bad trade off

Come to the UK. Over here we have a thing called Council Tax which is based on property values and divided into bands. My property has a value that puts it in band D. I therefore pay a higher Council Tax than a same sized house in the next road over, as, because at the time it was valued ready to be put into it's band, it had no double glazing and was in quite a state. Council Tax is made up of a portion that goes to our County Council to pay for things like road repairs, subsidised bus routes and other county wide stuff. Another portion goes to my Borough Council to pay for household waste collection, Borough Councillors allowances, planning enforcement, grass cutting etc. As I live in a village which has a Parish Council. So another bit gets lumped on for them. This gets spent within the village on the village playing fields and grass cutting. And that's not the end of it. Added to the bill is an amount towards Policing. All this costs me £1,495 a year. I used to live elsewhere in the village in a flat that was common hold, so that was another £75 a month gone.

I live way out in the country. When we have neighbors in need we don't wait to help, we generally don't even ask them if they need help, we just do what needs doing. One neighbor said her roof was leaking, we trapped it and that week we replaced her roof, no checkbooks needed. Last year one of our folks here fell ill, we got his Crops in, no checkbooks needed. I don't understand how you can have so many folks living together how her yard got to looking like that in the first place.

it's all part of living in the 'burbs .I gave up on that life style a long time ago and now i live in a huge factory and my neighbors are all factories. Nice and quiet at night,no noise on weekends and the neighbors are just like a village where everyone looks out for each other ,so...no crime. I can make as much noise as i want and no one is going to bitch about it and certainly no HOA to bust my balls over long grass ( no grass anyway..) ..And if i want to experience a change i just jump in the car and head for the beach .. Lovley!.oh,hey ,no annoying lawn mower or other smelly little small engine racket!

There are neighbors and then, there are people who simply live in the area. Some jobs, when people know you do them, they ask if you can quick so-and-so bc you have all the equipment to make it easy. It is nice to have the only place, several acres, on a dead end gravel road...not me, mom's and dad's. Only set back is when it dumps snow so bad my father has to clear road himself. They mostly have Amish neighbors. My mom trades with them. SHE makes the quilt tops and the younger Amish girls organize her sewing rooms. So peaceful in the country.

@tokuzumi1 - how about you take pride in your own property and maintain it yourself. I swear, but you people think everyone else should foot the bill. Most HOA fees are to maintain COMMON areas- not your freaking yard. You honestly think $50/month is enough to pay for the landscaping in the common areas and cut your grass every week as well. Go buy a town house and pay upwards of $250 in HOA fees a month, and they’ll keep your shit in pristine condition.

Our HOA sent me a certified letter because we added flowers and had the excess dirt in 3 too big to move bags (150 pounds/ea) at the curb for 3 days vs 24 hours for pick-up; "next time they'll charge us $100/day." Worse, we have a full lawn service, pristine looking landscaping, and this was just after we spent $35K renovating the outside frankly making the other houses look bad in comparison. Moral of the story, too often HOA's often suck!

We have the best maintained and looking yard in the development. Our home makes the neighborhood look better. I just received a letter from the HOA stating the Mercedes in my own driveway is being stored, because it has a car cover on it to protect it from the elements and gardeners when they mow the lawn. Sometimes they don't even mow. I should be the one complaining. I drive my car, so how is it being stored.

Did you hear about the HOA resident that fined because they didn't water the grass enough, it wasn't green enough or something. People are weird and if there's no rules, they will start doing wacky shit. It's not just about tall grass. HOA are needed. My parents lived in an upscale neighbourhood here in the UK. There were times they did stuff like leave a toilet in the front of the house for a week or two when renovating. Someone complained and my parents took care of it. But they grew veg in the front garden, digging up half of the lawn to do so but people respected their rights and never said anything although I could tell some didn't like it. I think HOAs are for when gentle words aren't enough but some people inevitably get too nazi with their mission and ruin it.

same reason why i don't live in a hoa either. my neighborhood always looks good. and almost all the houses of flagpoles with flags flying high including the military flags. 3/4 of my neighbors are retired military or of served until got out and of some are of iraq/Afghanistan war veterans with loss of limbs. they moved into my neighborhood so they can fly their flags and do whatever else freely. i watched a vid on where a hoa foreclosed on a war vet just because he required to had a ramp at the front door so be easier of in and out and the VA paid for the ramp and all and also the house was paid for thru his military benefits and they the hoa sent a crew to tare it down and then sent him a bill along with the notice of to get out...way too much control by them anyways. to tell the truth almost all hoa neighborhoods are in heavy demographically democratic controlled cities/towns.

The lawn needed some attention. BFD! Maybe she had extenuating circumstances forcing her to delay lawn care. I can get nutty with my lawn but there's been times I've been forced to let it ride for a while. I couldn't deal with a HOA. Better to get to know your neighbors, worry about the people not the lawn. I've actually cut neighbors lawns, removed snow (blizzard) as a favor knowing they would appreciate it.

Any attempts to harass us is met by counteraction from him, and his services come to us Family Pro Bono (no charge). The HOA where my folks lived came after my dad for some penny ante thing. Our uncle went after the HOA and ended up getting a judgement against them -- he plays dirty! He could have put the HOA out of business if he really wanted to, but just got the (6-figure) judgement.

You don’t understand? Simple that’s the last thing the care about. “Why does my lawn need grooming it’s fine the way it is. I’m just gonna go back inside and drink beer, watching sports” “taking care of my lawn doesn’t really matter” . It really doesn’t matter, but people who live in some type of community’s it will matter to them, and if they’re into that “making my property look better than the other” . It’s not a car your taking care of, it’s a lawn...I knowww it’s still important but everyone has their own interest.

Rodney's Repurposing/Recycling I can see how it's a good thing. Some people are lazy and HOA hires people going around the community cutting lawns. I'm lucky live in a hoa but not be part of it. I cut my own lawn. The reason why I say I can see why is cause the guy on the right to me is a corner house and is like me not part of hoa but he allowed the weeds to grow waist high. I think the last time he was told by the fire department to cut it cause it was a fire hazard. I got a burst pipe I have to fix and a sprinkle I have to replace since I dont have hoa but I'm free to put or add what ever i want to my house. Just put a gazebo up lol
@rodneysrepurposingrecyclin3821
zeke gar I take rather good care of my property, lawn is mowed, we'd eating is done, and there's no trash scattered. I do have to repair my own stuff, but that's part of being a responsible adult. All that said, I can't stand people trying to tell me what to do with my stuff.

Hey Dan, thank you for making this VLOG! I do lawn care work myself and since watching your VLOGs, I have learned many things I've been doing wrong all along in my mowing business. I've since learned the value of liability insurance (from another VLOG of yours), and in this one, I see that you edge and weed-eat first, making it neater and easier to get rid of the by-product through the mulching action of the mower. I also learned that instead of the spiral pattern I usually use, that you employ a back-and-forth mowing technique that leaves less residue and a whole lot less wheel ruts. Finally, you don't use a rider, which from my experience can gouge the yard where it turns. Thank you, from one lawn man to another!

I don't understand these comments. I understand the concept and reasoning behind the HOA. They also maintain the 2 large lakes that collect excess rain water and all the underground pipes that lead to them. Is that extraordinary enough for $25 a month?

That's the reason why I don't live in a homeowner's association area. I can't stand the fact that I would have to pay someone to tell me I have to do edging on my own property. The city complains enough when my grass gets over ankle-deep. Dad can no longer mow the grass because he can't walk anymore. And I drive a truck and I'm only home if I'm lucky every six weeks. I tell them deal with it. If they want to continue to get my tax money they will sit down and shut up. Of course I do have the option of moving to miles outside of town to a farm. And yes my home is mobile I live in a 16x80 mobile home for about $5,000 it can be moved.
@DansVlog
@DansVlog 7 лет назад
+Alvie Schreckhise Something tells me you don't need to be told to edge your grass or keep trash off the lawn. You probably keep a nice yard and a clean appearance. With that said, you wouldn't be paying someone to tell you what to do. You'd be paying someone to maintain the pool at the community park. You'd be paying someone to maintain the Gazebo area and the lakes that capture our rain water to avoid street flooding. You'd also be paying someone to maintain the video cameras that record the only way in and out for crime prevention allowing us a little bit of ease while we are at work. I am happy to pay someone for these awesome features living in my HOA governed community. Just saying...
@truckinchihuahuaalvieschre2494
Dan's Vlog nope in fact I have junk mowers and good vans I just don't drive and some for parts in my back yard. The front yard looks nice. From the street looks good most of the time. When I'm not working on a project. From the back looks like a junkyard. But if you are seeing the back you are trespassing and need to leave well enough alone. I drive a truck and get letters from the city to mow the grass because I'm home 1 time every 4 to 6 weeks. I usually tell them when the mayor and city council mows their weeds I'll mow grass. ***3 of the last 4 mayors had 10' tall horse weeds in their yard (1 on main street). So when my grass gets 8 to 10" tall I mow it. I usually get a letter 1 time a year at 5". When I mention their weeds it goes away every time. My old neighbor that I now on his property after he passed away used to tell them you send one more letter I'll quit mowing my grass. Then you can speak to my lawyer. Because Missouri State statutes specifically States that if a property owner owns the property before a city ordinance is past dictating what that person can do with that property he is exempt from that ordinance. And that city ordinance passed 5 years ago which was one year before my neighbor passed away therefore even I do not have to mow my grass because that ordinance passed after I bought the property. And that's the reason why all past mayors and city council members let their grass grow legally. Our city has actually lost that battle in court.
@likeawhispr
@likeawhispr 6 лет назад
I know right! Because it would cost an arm and a leg to have a kid mow and edge your property. This is exactly why your kind needs to stay on the other side of town. Expensive HOAs are needed to keep certain types of people out of the neighborhood- Like people who don't have enough money for something as simple as having someone responsible mow and edge their grass. Screw that! You're not moving in anywhere within 2 miles of my house!

More money is spent on lawns in America each year than the entire military budget.

Ummmm, which Military budget do you speak of (Country and Fiscal Year please) and can you state your source or are you just being a drama queen? Just curious, thanks

Sorry I misquoted that. It should be more money ($40 billion) is spent on lawn care than on foreign aid ($35 billion in 2014)

I didn't have knowledge of HOA when I purchased my home. Nonetheless, the neighborhood is held accountable for up-keep. Thanx for the lesson. You make it look so easy. Nice that you look out for your neighbors, that's cool.

Edging violation. Lol. Doesn't look like a million dollar house golf course neighborhood to me. Who would want to live in a place with an HOA?

Firstly what is HOA? I am a clean freak and I don't think it's that bad. Think you all need to come to UK and see some of the "Gardens" over here 🤣

Why do people need an HOA? I don't get it. People got along with out them for hundreds of years.
@PilotCristina

starlite556 Upkeeps some parts of the neighborhood and some maintenance if you have facilities like a pool or club house. It also prevents your neighbor from making their yard look like a junk yard. I sure wouldn’t like it if my neighborhood opened up a junk yard. It’ll be an eyesore. I personally like it cuz it keeps your neighborhood lookin amazing.

That is insane that a neighborhood with that small of homes would have an HOA! I live in a home that is 4,000 square feet and all the homes arounnd us are around that same square footage. That size of homes should determine if there is an HOA or not! Everyone falls into tough times at some point on their lives and having an HOA breath down your neck is never fun.
@DansVlog
@DansVlog 5 лет назад
The size of a home determines if the community wants to have an HOA??? Lol So I guess us pee-ons in our dinky little 1400 to 2200 square foot homes are not worthy of a community pool, security, playgrounds and dog walking area’s?? I bet you voted for Hillary... smh 🤦‍♂️

+RagingTiger, this is way more than "just taking care of your property", when you have local, state, and federal government telling you what you can and can't do to your property, why should I allow my neighbors to restrict me even more? As more and more communities spring up the harder and harder it is to find houses and areas not controlled by an HOA.

@likeawhispr

It is. It's free for anyone with the money to move into any area they want as long as they abide by the set rules. If you do not want to abide by the rules, then you are FREE to live somewhere else. See how that works. Freedom doesn't mean you get to do whatever the hell you want to do, when you want to do it.

I'll let my yard go like that in july and august so I don't have to water the grass. No HOA to deal with. Problem is everyone lets it go like that 99% of the time a it looks like a trailer park. I think HOA's have too much control, to some extent but the also keep the area from looking like trash. Some people have to be told what to do and do not give a fuc* what they do to the area's property values. And that's all it is people are worried your nasty looking trash pit for a lawn or house will affect there homes value. Because nobody wants to live next door to the trash dump. So do not buy the house next to me and you should be ok!
