Pt 2-Air Handler and Duct Retrofit- Air Volume Control

Today's video primarily deals with air volume control in the branch ducts by means of hand made manually operated balancing dampers. What's contained in the video barely scratches the surface of actual air volume control in the field. Whether you believe it or not Air Balancing is an entirely separate field within the broad scope of the HVAC industry. Professional air balancers have to have remarkable math skills and the patience of a saint. I've had the good fortune to work closely with them on many large commercial projects and it is almost mind boggling to see and assist in air balancing a multi-story commercial system from start to finish. Sheave changes and amperage draws of the blower motors play an important role. Now, on these little residential systems its not quite as detailed but without the addition of the manual branch dampers, you are left with no option except the mercy of the air flow generated. The only simple change you can make will be the blower speed selection if the air handler is fitted with a multi-speed blower motor.
So, there's no 'fab' work in the video and little to no installation work, but what is there are a few fairly good tips for beginners in the field with a suggestion of what NOT to do in certain circumstances. So watch and enjoy as we slowly bring a totally retrofitted system back to life.#diy, #sheetmetal, #airconditioner, #ductwork

Just came over from TikTok and subscribed. My dad and grandad were sheet metal workers from the 60’s through the 80’s. I really enjoy reminiscing with your videos. Thanks!

Well thank you for making the trip over !! This one was not the most informative but there are plenty more in the playlists like this one: ru-vid.com/group/PLk72G9DTzZ1taVZjyeN9DKr52HQ3hhcXd Lots of weird fittings plus an aggravating installation.

Hey Nelson, Good Morning my friend. How ya doing these days. I apologize for missing a lot of your hard work this summer, but knowing you I know you've fared well !! I DO see different treasures coming home through your shorts. Well, now that I've put that thought into print, it doesn't sound quite right..... LOL Thank you for always the supportive comment on the silly things I do over here.

Even I can agree with you that the former 'work' done there was disgraceful. I sincerely hope that the days of "ah, that'll do " are few and far between today. Thanks for this Wendell.

Sadly we can wish all we want to Reg, but there is still that 'faction' of the industry that thinks duct tape will cover any bad installation. So many installs are less than adequately put into service. There are actual one and two man shops out there that do installs with no sheet metal fabrication machinery at all. They hang pre-fab duct work and hand form plenums and return air boxes held together with screws and duct sealant. That's the new duct tape !! I watch a lot of them on youtube here and there. But I do have to add that there are a lot of really good installations out there as well.

It seems most of the time these details are left out anymore in all but the systems of extremely high installation costs...and those seem to be zone dampered systems in much larger homes. And THOSE are very rare.

Good on you for fixing the existing issues. Poor airflow and high static will prematurely kill a furnace. Thxs for the vids, Tractorman44!

The big picture David, was separating the second floor off this system, and installing an attic unit for that floor. Then this unit was downsized in capacity for only the first floor and what little load the basement added. Much less airflow and new duct equals more efficiency and less noise.

Good Morning Tom !! This one mis-lead me. I had 58 minutes to begin with, but I didn't know the last 2/3 of the rough cut was already uploaded as the furnace demo project much earlier. But no fear my friend, there are a few more interesting portions of the project in the line up.

I've heard that before from a UK internet friend. But I'm not sure exactly what's implemented over there. I guess the problem comes in with so many old structures that there is no centralized duct in place or its every difficult to get them installed because of the architecture...??? Btw, thank you for the compliment.

I use to do all them by hand too. Sometimes with a sheer. I prefer to use a malco hole cutter to make 6" taps and then what's left over is a perfect damper.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 6 месяцев назад
I liked the Malco hole cutter for the times a new run needed to be installed in existing duct. It's difficult to cut a hole with snips between the joists as you well know. Just no room to work but the Malco hole cutter made it much easier. That's a good idea with using the centers for dampers when you are using 6'' taps.

I redid all the dampers in the house I`m in at the moment. I and my brother adjusted them all with a manometer I think it`s called....CHEERS
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 6 месяцев назад
Well, if he had the fancy one with the canvas hood it was a Balometer, and if he had the hand held one for the floor registers, it might have been a Velometer. The first one is the most accurate, the second one is a bit more difficult. But he may have used a Manometer to measure the duct velocity and calculated cfm through another means too.

My Daughter just bought her first house and the "ductwork" made me sick. They used the insulated hose ( I don't even know what it's called) for all the runs from the main to the registers. Half of those were falling off the piping and had to be reattached. The cold air return in her living room was up off the floor about ¾" on one side. They had hung about 10' of the 10" return line off it with no support until well after a 90° elbow. I had to add support on the line and the box to get it level with the floor. It needs to be all reworked with hard pipe. Looks like I have yet another project coming up in the spring! I wish she hadn't fallen in love and signed papers on the house before I saw it. Oh well, it is in better shape than my first house. Oh and btw she bought the house from a "flipper" so that explains a lot. 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

Flex duct is recommended to never exceed 7 feet in length...and even that is supposed to be straightened and stretched as good as possible. Sounds like you've got your hands full. Yeah...those 'flipper' guys would like to put a band aid on a severed leg and call it good. It is quite frustrating what people try and DO get away with. I hope at least he's enjoying his profits. Actually, no I don't. LOL. Good luck with helping the daughter in the spring.

I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve seen collars cut in at the end of the duct, or in the End Cap
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 6 месяцев назад
Ain't it crazy....and the velocity will knock your hat off too !! I mean, sometimes there's no other choice and the end user just closes the floor damper. Then the cold air stagnates in the duct and if the humidity is just right the branch duct will condense moisture out of the air and drip, drip, drip.
