Those japanese Engineer solder suckers are brilliant, really do a good job. So highly recommended, even though I have rework tools, heatguns and solder vacuum machines.

RetroJay1974 I agree. The vacuum desoldering gun here is amazing, but the manual SS-02 pump is great for up close and personal work!

I know this is a old video now but what would you say is a powerful enough soldering iron to tackle this repair
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 2 года назад
60 watt temperature controlled iron like this is excellent for pretty much all work. amzn.to/3JXtCJV it keeps a check on the tip temperature and increases the power if necessary. I’ve used a similar model for five years but then the house fire happened (unrelated!)

I really envy your desoldering skills, it took me ages to clean up the holes for the two throughole capacitors on the main board (actually, I managed to do it only for one of them, with the help of a needle. The other one I just melted the solder while pushing the capacitor in place). Do you have any tip or trick to do it?
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 5 лет назад
You need a really hot temperature controlled iron. The problem with the mainboard is that it has a MASSIVE ground plane, so underpowered irons struggle to melt the solder before the heat is wicked away into the board. I actually now have a set of the "desoldering needles" that KiloSierraAlpha mentioned in the comments below and will be trying those out and reviewing them in a video very soon. (Comment here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ePGrTwP4t1k.html&lc=UgwzjQnvaMIS_LDa5qR4AaABAg )

What did you use to neutralize the alcaline left by the capacitors?
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 5 лет назад
painco94 some vinegar, washed away with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol.

Time to get a desoldering station for these fragile pads ?
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 5 лет назад
I do keep thinking that. It's one of those things where I always think "this is the last time" though... What model do you recommend BTW?
@LFOSyncToo
@LFOSyncToo 5 лет назад
Got 2. I've got a jobber which is a Aoyue 474A+ which works well and is relatively inexpensive. Then I've got a old vintage Pace soldering/desoldering station with foot pedal also found on eBay (model PPS-200CE, 80's vintage) which works great. Still spare parts available for it!Game changer in doing proper board repairs :)

@@LFOSyncToo Thanks for the info. It's definitely something I need, but will have to wait for some money as had an expensive month!
