I feel some businesses should offer an oversized handle line and encourage carvers to shape to fit

I’ve owned a few of Nick’s blades for a while, and they are such high quality that they are my preferred tools. Whenever I see videos from Nick’s workshop, I am inspired, but also enjoy seeing how such top quality results can be got from tools which are very ordinary. If Nick wanted he could charge much more for his tools, and upgrade his workshop tools. But his philosophy is not to price himself out of the reach of his main market. For which I am very grateful.

Hi Nigel, indeed yes Nic has refined his process over many years and he's proof that you don't need tons of high end equipment to produce high end blades as he does ~Peace~

I’ve just received my sloyd knife ordered from Hewn & Hone….I’ve got to say how impressed I am with the overall quality…. BUT… even more impressed with the expedient delivery…Wales to Australia in 5 days….it has restored my faith in the British and Australian postal services

Oh wow that is fast! yes the past three years have brought lots of delays and challenges to the postal service overall. Really hope the sloyd knife serves you well Andrew ~Peace~

Thank you gentleman for such an insightful video. I appreciate Nic taking time from his busy schedule to walk us through the process of making a truly awesome knife. Zed, as always, you have done a top notch job of capturing an art that is rare these days.

I'm thinking Nic much as me prefer to get into his retheem and just think quality and truly enjoy his work and results. He's a true craftsman. Big thanks for helping, which is unknown, DIY people who try for great tools but can't afford the $70 per each. The Air Forces combined with the USA. My cousin was a member of the years and retirement in England now, and it seems he is staying .Special pride about him. Thanks for giving him a home in England Great video thanks

Fantastic series guys. Great to see it’s not just me silently cursing to myself during the drilling and gluing process 😂
@Zedoutdoors
@Zedoutdoors 7 месяцев назад
Ha! Technically we could have edited that out and film the process going smoothly, but Nic felt it important we show the reality of doing it day to day, not to mention he had a dslr shoved in his face whilst trying to do it for this video! ~Peace~

As Zed said, I was happy for a warts and all video to go out, you learn more by fixing mistakes than by doing it right. Also Zed had the prime spot for filming of the drill wandering, maybe I'd have caught it from his position..

I've tried a few methods to sink the tang in a hidden tang handle and still not fixed on just one. Because different material responds different...lol most of the time I start the hole with drilling and then heat up a piece of metal the same size as I want and burn it in and I've found that it doesn't wander as much as the drilling. But again depending on the wood...
@Zedoutdoors
@Zedoutdoors 7 месяцев назад
Yes I have other videos on my channel that show the burning in method as well ~Peace~

I'd like to know the approximate definitions of the handle
@Zedoutdoors
@Zedoutdoors 7 месяцев назад
It varies depending on your hand size, but for reference its similar in size to a Mora 106 knife ~Peace~

29:52 The master Nic knows better, but this method seemed wrong to me.🙏 Would it be better to hold it in a knife vise with a surface that will not damage the steel and hit it from behind with a wooden hammer?🤔
@nicwestermann4206
@nicwestermann4206 7 месяцев назад
Well it would have been better not to be in that position in the first place, I would hope to have drilled the hole deep enough it didn't bottom out, and as I said I usually use round jawed pliers which won't mark the blade for the positioning. I could have put it in the wooden jaws of the vice, if id have hammered it and split the handle we would have been rather stuck...but anyway we were set up for filming from that spot.

Nic has been making tools long enough to know what he is doing, more so we had to adapt things slightly due to filming and we had a lot of filming to get done in a short space of time ~Peace~
