So the PINCHED rain sensor harness was just the tip of the iceberg of this Volvo's Wiper Problems.
The Park Sense Circuit going to the CEM is STILL BAD!!
Can we somehow get the wipers to work with NO PARTS REQUIRED?
And what about the SUNROOF?
It looks like a Happy Ending, but the Volvo From HELL has one more CURVE BALL up its sleeve...

Letting a customer dictate your terms/cost of service/repair is probably not a great business model, but between being a really nice guy, very curious, driven by an obsession to problem solve (eg fix things) and being absurdly qualified, equals some of the best content on RU-vid . 🎉👍

Note to customer -> DON'T ask for repairs you can't afford! Leave your vehicle alone; don't even replace the windscreen wiper blades yourself you'll stuff em up. Note to Ivan -> A Freebee? How bout just the 50% discount on the previous repair & leave it at that? In my opinion the 'asking for this & that & that too' repair for just the one repair charge, then crying poor, disqualifies him from ANY kind of discount! But, well, maybe I'm a hard bathtub, but I don't suffer fools too well. Anyway Ive, apart from that rant, you did a masterful job of this repair mate! I'm a DIYer myself, and maintain my own Volvo's (same generation as the one in the video) without getting into this situation. If you're a DIYer and think you need a new module, it's time to take a step back, seek some advice, or take the car to a pro. I have the Volvo diagnostic software, and for communication errors it flat out says not to replace the module, but to troubleshoot the wiring. I'm sure that note is there to prevent dealers from throwing modules at cars with network problems.

My last Volvo was a 1992 740 wagon. That car was a paragon of simplicity. Only computers were the very simple ECU running the electronic injection, and companion ICU running the ignition. I sold it to my son's (now ex) GF at around 300K miles, last I heard she's still driving it, and loving it. The electrics were all classic Bosch, the transmission was an AW71 (Aisin Warner, same transmission as used in mid 80's Toyota trucks and Celicas). Rear axle was a Dana-30 or something.

That trace reminds me of my clothes dryer. It blew its thermal fuse, and I traced the issue to a relay for the heater element that had a thermal event and fused itself in the closed position. That thermal event took out one of the traces. The board was out of production and used boards were too expensive. But I was able to find the relay on digikey. I got that soldered to the board minus the one leg and just soldered a wire onto that leg to bypass the trace. Worked for a few years until the new relay had a similar thermal event and took out a bunch of surface mount components. There was no fixing it. It was actually quite the sight with carbon everywhere creating paths for some good arcs and sparks. If you're going to let the magic smoke out, make it a show I guess :-)

A shorted SCM is a common Volvo item. I believe that after replacement it requires an initialization with VADIS after replacement. The pinched harness at the UCM is a common technician error on reassembly. Great job on that bypass of the circuit in the CEM. Volvo electrical diagnosis isn’t as hard as the access to the individual parts. I’ve had worse problems than these on an XC/90 too. That one was due to a soccer Mom picking up a blanket on the side of the field after the game that a mouse had been napping on while she threw it back inside the truck and drove home with it. It got underneath the carpet and gnawed through the fiber optics and some other wiring. Removing all of the seats first, second and third row was just the beginning. That nice flat floor is a build up and the actual wiring is 6 inches below the carpet. The rear seat mounting brackets are heavy as hell and very complicated to remove and re-install. I hated that job but felt good that having the whole shebang disassembled for inspection after the rodent entry was verified by the excrement trails and more chewed wiring was found. I was afraid to not fully the interior, make a repair and have my name associated with it only to later learn there was a car fire. The owners auto insurance paid all of the necessary hours thankfully as it was an extremely time consuming job.

Noooooooooo!! More problems? Sounds like this guy doesn't want to pay what your worth... One diag fee? 😱 I understand that he already wasted a ton of money with swaptronics. I'm sure the pile of extra modules wasn't cheap. In addition, most reputable shops wouldn't touch an older Volvo with a 10' pole with so much customer induced damage. Just look at the cut off and spliced bulk connector!! 🤮 Your the only person that has been able to poperly troubleshoot and undo the years of electrical shenanigans going on with that car. I like Eric the car guys website because he has a useful FAQ that imbues some great diagnostic techniques! Not sure if pine hollow has the same. E.g. Eric was diagnosing a misfiring car, and he says one of the first checks he often does is the compression test as the engine is an air pump, and the basic compression requirement must be met before it even has the chance to run well.
@major__kong
@major__kong 3 дня назад
@@zzoinks An internal combustion engine needs air, fuel, spark, timing, and compression. Any one of those will cause an engine to act up. A relative compression test is probably easiest since all you have to do is put an amp clamp around the battery cable. Fords have a power distribution test or something like that that is very similar to relative compression. You can easily see what cylinder isn't making a full contribution with just a scan tool. If you're pulling spark plugs out to check those, borescopes are so cheap now you might as well buy one and shove it down into the hole for a look, especially if the spark plug doesn't look normal. While only those 5 things matter, modern cars can be too smart for their own good. The coolant temp sensor might be wonky and jack up the air-fuel mixture making it hard to start or run rough if you get it started. Same with the mass air flow sensor. My engine uses a MAP sensor, which is much more robust to "air" problems.

That was a great diagnosis. So many different issues, parts cannon and extremely poor jobs previously. You made it look pretty easy, despite many, many others would have thrown in the towel a long time ago.

I have the rain sensor and it is a nice feature. The battery on the car alarm will last about six years. When that battery dies the sunroof will not work. I don't mess with my cars other than to keep them clean inside and out. I am a stickler for repair and maintenance. IVAN could be an electrical engineer. This owner should be very thankful.

Offcourse now Ivan is going to be inundated with hacked up Volvos that are deemed "unfixable"...maybe have a special rate for those...like 3x the average hourly rate...😂😂😂

Ah! The good old days when the entire car worked without a single module or CAN/LAN or computer! I love my 1970 VW based Eureka, (Sterling in the U.S.). A few relays are the most technical bits. So much simpler and fixable!

A dude who’s all about no parts required fixes needs a windshield wiper blade slicer.. you just run it across a crappy rubber part of a blade and it shaves off an even strip all the way across and breathes more life into old worn out wipers.. theres a trick to using em and you just gotta go it in one swoop.. valuable tool though for a few bucks.

I found that if you solder in a splice mid wire you can still shrink tube it by slicing shrink tube with the adhesive lengthwise, then neatly wrap it around the splice when wires are held parallel to each other. Then just zip tie at several spots over the shrink tube and carefully shrink it in sections. It will hold together and shrink and when it cools you can remove the zip ties.

Son, been there and done that. I get the challenge of not letting the car beat you. If you didn't fix it he would sure as hell say "I took it to this hot shot and he couldn't fix it" He wouldn't say I'm a cheap guy😂. Solution, read the situation and say you're too busy. I don't think you need the practice, you're pretty damn sharp young man. I don't work on Euro or Corvettes, owners are all the same mo, think they own something special, never want to spend money, I suit em up and goodbye😂

Very good work Ivan. As always entertaining to watch and a satisfactory outcome. I have the TS80 iron and the DS212 scope, for the price the stuff is perfectly adequate. The red paint on those boards of the cem, what, why? Always learning from your videos, thanks for sharing. Best regards, Duncan
