Due to frustration with assembly, instructions, description, and accuracy of representation, this series of videos is at an end. I did not finish this model kit, but I want to help the manufacturer with a few small improvements, which will really bring out the potential of this kit.
My suggestions are:
1- better identification of each part
2- using accurate names for those parts
3- clearer and more detailed instructions for assembly
4- a more meaningful and educational description of what the PT6 is, and how it is used.
As promised, the best re-write of the description of the PT6 will be contacted by me for an address to send the complete kit, free of any charges.
I will review the submissions, which must be original and not a copy from another source... and I will be the sole judge for this contest.
send your 1 page or less description to joljbc@yahoo.com
The kit is produced by Skymechman, and sold by EngineDIY
The supplied instructions and the description are both here:
docs.google.com/document/d/1j...
The model kit supplier is here:
www.enginediy.com/en-ca/colle...

I guess the upside is it's a model. I have had parts sent from the dealer to repair equipment that are "Almost Identical" and just won't fit or function as the original did. I love the quote of the year " I know I sound angry but I'm having fun". Cheers.

Although I couldn't make it all the way to the end, I agree with you 100%. I know there are people that build elaborate models, and that's fine. I stopped doing that at 11 or 12 years old. I want it to do something, preferably what it is modeling, when I'm done building it. That's also when I got my 1959 Ducati, in 3 baskets + a frame, to replace my 1936 Cushman. Thanks, --gary

PT6 model kits update Did you ever discover why this motor has the first raised part in the exhaust Which I see is represented in this model ? You are a genuine jet tech as much as I love the P & W PT6 I can only imagine the headache it may cause us mere mortals Going to look out for more updates, good luck

There are no PT6's with cartridge start. Even if there were, this model is not one of them. They are using the word cartridge in their own special way.

I was thinking the same... been through that sort of frustration with a product, and it seemed that the manufacturer had no idea of how to communicate with the customer. It's a shame, because the product itself is pretty impressive.. or at least many aspects of it are.

Agent JayZ quote of the day....... "I know I sound angry but I'm having fun here"... epic. You'd give it 2 out of 10... lol! The PT6 is an amazing little 'fanless', 'no bypass' twin shaft reverse flow turboprop engine. Toss that thing in the midden b4 you blow a fuse. Gotta love the PT6.
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 3 месяца назад
I've made a video about that. The PT6 is no more "reverse flow" than Australians and New Zealanders are "upside down" people.

It's a sticky wicket! I once read a warning to observe polarity when connecting the power source in order to "avoid destroy"! Of course that was translatable but many times the words and terms do not meet! Maybe it can just be wall decoration?

When I heard "cartridge receiver," the first time, I initially thought of a gunpowder cartridge engine starter, but I've never heard of that being used on a civilian turboshaft engine. I knew something was seriously wrong with the directions at "cartridge receiver two." Apparently the term is used by the model manufacturer to refer to any part that is the outer shell of a two-part assembly. It would be far more helpful to use a term related to that employed for the real-world part, such as "exhaust duct outer shell." It should not be that difficult to build a two-shaft model. If the model is intended to be turned by an electric motor, perhaps one shaft could be driven by airflow generated by the other. Assembling that could be one of the more entertaining parts of a well done kit.

I would think that the necessary goal of any educational model of a PT6 would be to make the most definitive and surprising aspects of the design apparent. That being, that the air enters in the back and leaves from the front(ish), and that the power turbine and gearbox are decoupled from the core. As a nice to have (but it would be REALLY nice to have) it would be great if the model had a functioning gearbox, even if plastic parts limited the reduction factor to two or three just to show that the power turbine spins faster than the propeller. Any curious person should be able to walk up to such a model, spin its parts, think about it for a minute, and basically get how the thing operates.
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 3 месяца назад
I agree with the last part, but actually the air does not flow backwards at all. If you think a little bit, the PT6 is quite conventional, with the only slightly interesting detail being it has an integral reduction gearbox. The air flows in a completely regular way, but the engine itself is designed to be mounted in the air frame backwards to what one might expect. Air flows in the inlet, from the low pressure end to the high pressure end of the compressor, burns the fuel in the combustor, enters the high pressure side of the turbines, exits from the low pressure side of the turbines, and leaves the engine out the exhaust duct... no different from any other gas turbine engine. I've got one entry so far, so you still have a chance to win the kit. info in the description.

@@AgentJayZ Well gosh. I don't actually want the model. My house is already full of guitars. But I can't help myself in the face of a challenge to explain a thing without honking it up. So here's my quick shot at it. The PT6 turboprop engine is among the most widely used aircraft powerplants in the world. Designed for dependability, efficiency, and compact form factor, it is used in a wide range of single and multiple engine aircraft. In the conventional tractor configuration, its core air intake occurs near the rear of the engine relative to the airframe, and its gas exhaust is just behind the propeller. While there is usually a nacelle air intake just under the propeller, intake air travels through a duct to reach the engine inlet back near the firewall. Air then flows forward through a multi-stage axial and centrifugal compressor and then is folded and reversed through a combustor section to keep overall engine length short. Hot expanding combustion gasses then flow forward through a high pressure turbine section that powers the core gas generator. Remaining gas flow then travels to a mechanically decoupled power turbine section and then another flow reversal out a pair of exhaust pipes. While the power turbine rotates at a very high RPM, this is reduced through a multi-stage gearbox to provide a high torque output at an appropriate RPM for a propeller. In flight, the core of the PT6 engine remains near 100% RPM at all times, and engine power changes are accomplished through a combination of propeller pitch and appropriate matching changes in fuel flow to maintain constant RPM.

Well This wannabe PT6 Kit could be renamed “The Gadget” or “The Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator” I have a suspicion that this is a new startup company In Xi Jinping China that is making a bunch of high tech models for Bookstores and Amazon. The other model is a real desktop working Steam Engine that has a faulty Steam Safety Valve. So I doubt the guy making the kit will do anything to make the kit correct. Just to a random sweepstakes drawing and send it away or just crazy glue the whole kit together could be a work of art .

It's clear the people who wrote the documentation were either clueless or deliberately dumbed it down for some reason. They obviously don't understand their audience, This isn't a Childs model, anybody who purchases and builds this thing is gonna be a gearhead and wants to know and use the prober terminology. They may as well have just called the parts doohickey and thingamajigger.
@zlm001

Unfortunately a lot of models of aircraft engines are way overpriced junk. It's so disappointing. It wouldn't be so bad or egregious if they didn't cost several hundred dollars. I get that they're not in high demand but if rather spend a little more for better quality if I already have to dump hundreds for cheap junk. I've seen some turbofan models pop up recently that look like they're better quality and more accurate, but I'm still not ready to drop a few hundred to find out if they're worth it despite the fact that I really want a model of a turbofan. There seems to be a few related companies that make all the junk stuff for different kinds of model engines.

Perhaps the maker of this model doesn't care about turbine engines in any way. Whoever made this doesn't know English well or perhaps at all. They don't care to understand English. They don't care about accuracy. They are simply looking to profit from people's interest in aviation. So they make the cheap thing that looks gee whiz to sell it to people that don't know better. Maybe they were skilled at creating the files for the 3d printer and had a little interest in aviation but no real knowledge. So kludge it together and quit complaining LOL. Perhaps I shouldn't talk, in my hands it may just have gone straight into a bin
