The surface is probably too smooth. Contrary to intuition, smooth does not mean low friction. The sightly textured surface of the other mousepads reduces friction by reducing contact surface area. It's the same reason that a dish sponge has more friction on the sponge side than the abrasive side. Find a way to get a matte ptfe mat and it may glide better. Edit: you could also try roughing up the surface a bit with some very very fine sandpaper but it will be hard to keep the wear even.
I coated a G440 hardpad in PTFE spray that you would use for sliding doors and the results were actually INSANE, my G502 X with glass feet feels like it hovers over the surface. It was a cheap experiment and i'm super happy with the results, i just wish the G440 was twice as big.
you should try cloth as the mouse glide but with proper cutout instead of using something stupid like a socks, the contact surface is too great, basically reverse the whole setup. also PTFE sheet are usually not very flat, if you really want it to work, you probly need thicker sheet, precision milled with flatter surface.
maybe it needs to be broken in? same as some ptfe feet need to be broken in. could be that the initial surface is rough and needs to be smoothed down. don't know how you'd achieve that evenly on such a large surface. maybe try a polisher (that's used for polishing cars)?
Easier to start moving mouse (low static friction), super smooth which is often nice for tracking. Requires good mouse control though to make use of it optimally.

Well yea that was the experiment, I bought a sheet of pure PTFE (same stuff your mouseskates are made out of) which is way more expensive than any plastic pad just to see if it would work well (it didn't)

Id considerd buuying one before, now i will not : ) thanks! ion the flip sidei use 3M .1MM thick double sided adhesive pads plus pfte before to make mouse feet. you essentially have a lifetime of ptfe feet, if you so choose to cut them out and make : )
if its in the range of the adjustable lift off range yes :) lower is better but shorter life i was thinking ??? idk if u can notice it after its adjusted for ?
