PTSD in Older Veterans

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a common condition in Veterans. Seemingly benign triggers can exacerbate the symptoms of PTSD. In the presence of age related changes, these triggers can present in unusual and difficult to interpret ways. The video was created to help caregivers of older Veterans with PTSD understand the triggers and address the symptoms. Credit again goes to Barb Kamholz, MD for her creative vision.

My dad was a Vietnam vet. He had PTSD, but it wasn't recognized by the military like it is now. He died at age 40 from alcoholism in 1990. He had to sleep in the living room because he was afraid of hurting my mom or my brothers and me. It was confusing and heartbreaking to see him "fighting" the enemy in a half awake flashback.

My great uncle was in Vietnam as an engineer. Him and his buddy were clearing this road for months and back and forth back and forth with no issues. One day, his buddy who was driving ahead of rest of the trucks slightly off the road, just inches off and BOOM. A French landmine that was for antipersonnel but due to the tractor being a tractor and not a armored vehicle was enough to kill him. My uncle didn’t even tell his kids that story he told me because I asked about his time in the war. I said I was sorry but he began tearing up and said “no no it feels good to share that I haven’t ever really thought of it.” He tried to bury it up and hope to forget it but it was always there in the background. He’s passed now and with his wife in heaven god bless him

I found out I had PTSD when I learned it was not normal to pull people down to the floor on the 4th of July. That there was no reason to identify every aircraft over head to make sure it was not a medivac. That things can be left in the road that don't explode. That tinted windows are not always hiding Vehicle Borne IED's. That sagging suspension dose not mean its weighed down from explosives. Man, my wife has had to deal with some of my bullshit haha.

Had a buddy of mine that was in Afghanistan and on 4th of July when someone lit off one of the mortars without saying something first when the explosion shot up the first thing he did was hit the ground with his hands over his head… he went from mid conversation with 4 of us to that in a split second. That hit my heart a lot different. Bless all of our veterans and especially those that have experienced combat and are struggling with PTSD and other things.

No, my great uncle’s mind was completely ruined by war I saw something similar as a child and it traumatized me to see him screaming
@Llialune

I might have read you comment incorrectly, but if you're implying you're depressed because your PTSD is affecting people around you, don't blame yourself, please. You're the one that went through trauma, it's not your fault. The people around you that love you are probably only affected in the sense that they see you go through that and feel sad that it happened to you and that they can't change it nor save you from having PTSD. Please don't feel guilty for that, it's not on you.❤

@@chloekit4861 Our mother back in the day was naive. She was forced to marry a man because he would've killed himself otherwise. Then he couldnt keep his hands off her and beat up my sister and me to. It was a pretty regular occurance my sister and me were grabbed by our throats and sometimes even carried like that to our bedrooms. I've seen him rape my mother beat her. Drag her down the stair by her hair or up the stairs. Then the horrible screaming of him raping her. All the while telling ujs to not show any emotion. OR else. Tried to make me kill one day my own mother by shoving a gun in my hand. And slapped me because i missed on purpose. On that of top i was bullied rellentlessly beatend up because i am not white. They made pretty sure i knew i was not white ugly because not only words. But it one day i got beat up so badly even they let me go because i was so bloodied up. They hit my with bricks and empty alcohol glasses. And kicked the shards in my back. Those images i remember it so accurate. Because the pain is a reminder. My mother i hold her in the highest regard she did everything for me and still is due to me not able to live life due to anxienty fear and triggers that bring me back to my own hell. Funny thing about people who are close to those who experience PTSD. At first they are drawn to the soldier/sailor/airman for whatever reason (dig the uniform, stable job, medical benefits, clean cut and groomed) but those qualities come at a cost: The uniforms can draw unwanted attention and the kit takes up a lot of closet space at home. Stable job alright...so stable that the boss needs to know everywhere you go and may not always give you permission to go somewhere while on leave. Those medical benefits are there for a reason... the military member will need them and so will the family, more so that most other members of society. The dress and deportment standards that military members are forged into are an inherent part of military life and is essential for the austere and harsh living, working, and survival conditions that many military members are subjected to during their tours or endless training exercises. For many who have served, this is one of the hardest parts of reintegrating back into civilian life. And THEN you add PTSD on top of all that and you can really find out the true colors of those people who we believe are there for us when we need them..

I came back stateside to my next duty station...I was having trouble sleeping and would get scared from sounds. I asked my new XO who was I thought caring...he was a West Point desk jockey with his "Fire Guard" ribbon. He told me to grow up and act like a real solder??? I was a 101st Airborne Sniper in Vietnam. I learned that day, NEVER tell anyone about the war. It's not glorious ... it hell. I often sit alone at home for days, often not even eating... I'm waiting to join my buddies. I marched one time in 1983 on ANZAC Day while in Australia, as I moved there to be a teacher... the war got the next flight from Chicago and followed me here. The VA rated me 100% disabled, but I live alone. This is an old video...there are no "Mood Stabilizers" that work as over 70 have been tested.... The VA doesn't help, if you believe this woman,I got some prime swampland for sale!

I’m not a Vet., but I have CPTSD from childhood abuse, neglect, medical traumas, you name it. Just about every trauma there could be, other than racism and being in a war torn country. Sexual abuse, emotional neglect, witnessing prescription drug abuse/dependence, violence between my older brothers and parents and sometimes me, too. And My brain erased most of it until I birthed my son in June of 2018, a little over a year after a miscarriage. Trauma freaking overload. 😑 I began having severe anxiety and panic attacks and was super clingy and overly emotional. I would have angry outbursts (which is nothing like my typical self)… and then family reacted poorly to me because part of my trauma causes a freeze response which includes verbal communication. I WANTED to speak, but couldn’t. Family responded in scared and angry manners, making things unintentionally worse. 😮‍💨 Talking things out with family now is hard, but I am trying now that I’m not being constantly triggered into a panic attack and flashbacks.
