I don't know how I started watching your stuff, I guess RU-vid algorithms. But you are nailing it. Your last one was about chicken shops, very much a city or big town thing, and today you're doing Bangers and Mash and Shepard's pie which is a staple even in my village of 1 pub and a spar. It's very refreshing, I'm guessing you have a good network here in the UK. BTW pretty sure Shephard's Pie is from the UK not Ireland.

I love Ben's videos, he's a guy who just loves his food, and gives us a take on the British classics with no prior experience, and mostly he likes it. Good sign that the bad rep we have is wrong, sure we do have bad food, but done well British food is pretty darn good! Ben - Nah, don't get rid of the eating noise, it's part of the way you do it!

Mate, glad you enjoyed these classic dishes so much, there's many more you should try. Lamb Hot Pot is a winner, Irish stew (beef) with dumplings, fish pie etc, lots of super hearty comfort food that's perfect for Autumn / Winter, enjoy!

Personally I love to have baked beans with my Bangers, Mash and Onion gravy. Try traditional Lancashire Hotpot with accompaniment of Pickled Red Cabbage.

There's two version of that dish for any other Americans that are watching Bens videos. The Sheppards pie and the Cottage pie. Sheppards pie should be with minced Lamb/mutton and Cottage is with minced beef. Just for the record, british people don't eat this kind of food every day. We can eat colourful vegatables lol
Mushy peas are made with marrowfat peas which taste completely different to garden peas anyway, I'd always add a couple of veggies to sausage and mash, cabbage is great and Shepherds pie isn't particularly Irish, I'd definitely say it was equally British/Irish, my Mum would always make Shepherds pie with the leftovers from a leg of lamb from the Sunday roast, and just sort of tear it into chunky pieces, the big thing for me which makes sausage and mash though is the onion gravy, it's brown food for sure, but homey, comforting and delicious, nice video!
this is the food of my life, so lovely to hear people who " get it " and this was lovely to watch. We are a northern european island with a wettish climate, we couldnt grow red peppers back in the 1800's but i guess we could now, but thats not the point. Eat what you harvest.
the pubs are basically just filled with people that have had a long, hard day/week at work and they're just out for a few pints with the boys and so they can be a bit rough. additionally no, your not supposed to go to a pub for food under most circumstances but you almost always have food if your there to drink and it is for that reason that the seating is mostly freed up because people aren't there to eat but rather have a good time and chill out with a few pints. I get that pub culture can seem confusing but a good way to understand it is to imagine that everyone there is fed up with work and wants to enjoy themselves and you can do whatever you want as long as you don't disturb them (of course unless they're the friendly sort) ...... the most important part is your there for you so don't worry about what everyone else is doing. love the videos

Yes! Shepherds pie with cheesy top and peas is a staple dinner in our house, bangers and mash we usually have peas or carrots but onion gravy is a must . Next time get some of that mustard out to go with the sausages and some mint sauce with the shepherds pie . So nice to see you enjoying classic British food !

Good lad. You get it. It's hearty and warming, and not artificial. It's grey and cold outside so the food does fit the climate. After a hard day's work in the winter, sausage and mash or shepherd's pie hits the spot. When it's made well, it's perfect.
Central London has a huge drinking culture especially in Shoreditch and near the "City of London" which is different to "London". It's down to lots of factors: - nobody drives to work - Thursday is the new Friday "The pre-kend" and a lot of people finish work early on a Friday. Particularly in Shoreditch. - Commuters find it easier sometimes to wait for the train/tube rush hours to calm down before heading home. - The majority of the workforce is young people who have no reason to head home to a family etc. But in general, meeting with friends and colleagues in pubs and socialising is something we all enjoy and see as a good thing.
My mom’s Thanksgiving dinner always included peas probably just for color, but I always looked forward to making a crater in my mashed potatoes, filling it with peas, and dousing it with gravy. Mmm Mmm Good
Its good to see someone who actually appreciates british food unlike everyone on social media that jumpns on the british food is bad bandwagon when they've probably never even tried it. There's so many local dishes around the country that youll never get to try in London that are good hearty meals. Ben was really debating moving to the UK just for the Cumberland sausage 😂

I’ve worked in Shoreditch, it’s common to grab a pint with work friends before getting the train home, and in London it’s just nice to be outside when it isn’t raining, hence the crowds outside an otherwise empty pub.
A few London classics Bleecker burger - NY chef making NY burgers in London Honest Burger - good London based burger chain Beigel bake - great bagel shop in brick lane, with a nice anecdote as there’s 2 next to literally each other, the other is beigel shop 2 doors down. People debate over which is better but most prefer beigel bake. They do amazing salt beef bagels and salmon with cream cheese bagels For British classic food: Scotch egg Pork pie Haggis Kedgeree Pie and mash, like a steak and kidney pie Or pie mash and liquor, a variation which is very traditional and rarely eaten now Cornish pasty Cream tea and scones with cream and jam
Never had bangers and mash?!?! That really means it's truly a British dish I have had it countless times. And I also love the respect you have when you speak on these foods I truly appreciate this as I am bloodlines Irish and English and grew up here just under South London. I live in South London now and these goods truly our a foods especially in winter with lots of nice gravy and yes we usually have broccoli with it 💓

You’re so right! In 🇬🇧 our pub grub dishes come from the days of long farming days in the cold and needing to use the produce to make heart warming dinners that warm and fill you up ❤cheese on the pie is usually optional by individual recipe and done if different ways
Your spot on with the weather climate food thing, we only eat those foods in the winter really in the summer we have salads. You gotter try lamb stew and dumplings HITS DIFFERENT
Yes, that's been mentioned a few times in these threads.....our foods are actually quite tasty, and much of it is comfort food. There are few things as warming as a fat chicken pasty from a pie shop on a drizzly day
@@sarahbrown5373 I grew up going to Cornwall for summer beach holidays. I moved out to LA and every time I came out of the water I wanted a Cornish Pasty forgetting it wasn't a thing anywhere else.

Glad to see you enjoying the British foods. Many countries have quite fancy looking dishes and British foods don’t look anything special comparatively. But they’re just as you say, hearty filling meals with good flavours to “warn the cockles” as they say. Whilst you’re here (if you still are) try the variety of sausages we have here. Cumberland sausage is beautiful, but we also have a variety of flavoured sausage which are all unique and incredible. Just like you said, I could eat bangers and mash any day, with a good gravy you can never go wrong. Glad you’re enjoying your visit mate.
I would have made steamed cabbage with the shepherds pie , add a chopped tomato with celtic salt ,black pepper and butter in the steamer it's yum 😊 ,chopped Brussels cooked in bacon lardons sprinkled with some gruyere with the sausage and mash 👍
Toad in the hole......pretty simple recipe that I reckon you could quite easily make for your programme. Basically its a big casserole dish with a number of your favourite sausages laid around it ( partially cook if worried ) and then you fill the dish up with Yorkshire pudding mix/batter until the sausages are covered.....cook until crispy, golden brown and batter is slightly firm to the touch. Variations can include smearing the sides and bottom of the casserole dish in a film of butter or beef/duck fat. And Gravy, always eat British food with a good gravy.

I’m from Canada and went to England when I was 13. I remember seeing bangers and mash on TV commercial when I was there and my family made it for me a few days later. I make it here usually once every few months and it always just hits so heavy
Sausage and mash with a generous dollop of gravy is heaven! Also, a great meal to order at a pub to judge its food quality. If you can get the simple stuff right, shows they care.
You should visit east London, brick lane, Islington, Camden Town - loads of places to visit. Try a proper eat end pie and mash shop, pie, double mash and liquor xx
Shepherds pie. With or without cheese. You have Leicestershire cheese which is the best on it. So they did the best. Cheddar is ok. But not as good. Lamb is expensive so you can use beef mince. Its easy. Onions chopped and fried. Add mince. And sliced carrot. Tinned or not. Boil potatoes mash with butter salt and pepper. Put all in a deep dish. Add grated cheese. Stick in oven. 20 mins. Till cheese is browned. Done. Glad you are loving it
TBH, coming from a seaside town never been gotten the mushy peas with fish n chips, have always had mushy peas with just chips or a pie too and always with gravy….
Irish here, the cheese is pretty much essential. The layer of potatoes a little thin and maybe a little over done IMO. There should at least an inch of fuffy mash. The top of that one looks more like a giant cheesy roast potato, which looks delicious, but would be even better with the mash underneath.
Yeah we often sprinkle some grated cheese over out cottage/sheperds pie and put a few knobs of butter on top so it comes out all yummy. And sometimes if we want extra nice mash, we'll mix some grated cheese into it. - Cheesy mash. Sausages in the uk vary in quality alot. The best sausages come from good butchers shops or farm shops, like my favorite sausages from 'Riverford Farm Foods' where they do like pork and apple, a spicy paprika one, garlic and leek, and various types, ... some smoked, some marinaded in wine, - lots of variety. My ideal sausage and mash would be just some really nice mashed potato, riverford sausages and served with a red wine ratatouille. I'm personally not a fan of onion gravy which it is often served with. I'd rather just normal gravy.
Comfort Food as Guy Fieri would say and you read my mind just as i typed this sentence you said the words Comfort food lol its all good food , imagine eating these meals in a nice warm pub with a fireplace and a dog running around lol as thats the sort of pub i used to visit years ago , sadly pubs are closing down now due to the cost of living crisis , its sad my culture is being erased and replaced with bloody Costa Coffee shops lol
The cheese on top of the shepherds pie is a thing mate! But that one looked like they gave you a generous helping of it! But you can never have too much cheese! lol
