Puberty Blockers | Carla Rockmore

Imagine having a child who needs important medication. It’s available to other children for other reasons, but it’s not available to your child. I’m not being dramatic. Trans kids literally do not sit well in their skin. Puberty blockers allow them to breathe until they figure it out. Medical decisions in any scenario should be made between the parents, their children, and their physician. It is inconceivable that anyone outside of this intimate circle should have a seat at the table. Ivy did not choose to be trans, she was born that way just as she was born with her beautiful brown eyes. And that can’t be changed. Transgender children’s lives are not easy. Why are we making it more difficult for them? I wonder…

The thing is puberty blockers have permanant side effects if you are just confused and regret it later then your whole life will be horrible. The US is weird you dont allow kids to drink alcohol under 21 but you will allow them to chemically castrate themselves when puberty hits. These permanant life altering decisions need to be made when they are older if you still want to when you are 21 then go for it. If they are having issues with anxiety and growing up and changing then get therapy work through them before radicalising the situation. I hope you adequately review all the risks before going through with it. Always look bothside of the road before crossing it😅

Puberty blockers are not FDA approved. Giving your child experimental drugs is insane. Why would injecting experimental drugs into a CHILD that could cause delayed growth plate closure, leading to slightly taller adult height. Less development of genital tissue, which may limit options for gender affirming surgery (bottom surgery) later in life as well as a myriad of other probable negative effects be PRIVATE? It's child abuse.

Although I respect your family's experience, the scientific opinion on puberty blockers is still not completely formed. I was on these medications for only 4 months (treatment for a severe PV bleed) and I was warned sternly about the side effects and the importance of not prolonging their use, for example, I was told I would need osteoporosis preventive treatment if I would exceed the 4 months. I have also seen the side effects on adult men who take them for prostate cancer. Nobody really knows what is the real long-term effect when the use starts at a young age, this is literally uncharted territory. I hope all goes well for your family, I just do not want people to think that these medications are as ''innocent'' as are frequently portrayed on many media outlets.

Dude these people are NOT experts. The person saying puberty blockers have been used for decades, is referring to their use on children with PRECOCIOUS puberty; children who entered puberty way too early. It's for people with a hormonal imbalance. Not for healthy, and developing kids. One hormone blocker, lupron, has been known to cause sterelization. Other countries such as the UK and Switzerland have pulled back on giving out puberty blockers because the long term impact is still unknown. Do not listen to these people.

I think this is your most meaningful video ever. I was one of those girls who had to a bra by fifth grade. My mother delayed as long as she could, but by then I was a 34B. I was in no way ready for puberty when it first began to become evident at age 8. I'm born female and need no transitioning, but I sure could have been spared a lot of grief had puberty been delayed by at least two years. This governmental intrusion into every personal and intimate aspect of how we raise our children and try to meet their needs is ghastly. It has to stop. Bless you and your adorable daughter for bringing the obvious into relatable perspective.

I love you Carla. But as someone who has to take Lupron, I can attest to their side affects. There is no “wrong puberty”. There’s no pausing it. Once the window of development is gone, it’s gone forever. This often results in brittle bones, and underdeveloped genitals (which make it hard to fully transition later), and lack of ability to procreate or orgasm. FOR LIFE! 90% of children grow out of it by age 18. Let kids be medically. It’s likely your son is just a flamboyant gay kid.
@alexbennet4195
@alexbennet4195 Год назад
The problem is that there really isn’t enough research into them, which is why so many countries (UK + Scandinavia - the US is lagging behind) have halted prescribing them outside of clinical trials - into whether they negatively impact the brain long term, into whether they prevent the brain from developing sufficiently (and issues of brain fog etc) while the child is on them for the child to make a reasoned choice on whether they do need to medically transition, and the long term consequences of that, the way that gender nonconforming children may be treated by their parents (and by wider society!) that may push them into the box of “girl” or “boy” based on things as surface-level as the toys they like or the clothes they want to wear, before a child even has a properly developed sense of their own personhood etc. In extreme cases of a child in debilitating and prolonged stress while experiencing puberty the benefits certainly seem to outweigh the risks, but the potential to do harm is overall very concerning, and right now needs to be thoroughly evaluated so that children can be sure to receive the right care.
@leeannsolice7473
@leeannsolice7473 Год назад
Let's let the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association advise primary care physicians, parents and individuals about this. Each parent can weigh concerns about their child experiencing "brain fog" versus all the data about suicide. I will volunteer to sit quietly and not try to advise anyone on how to treat childhood cancers. I'll leave advice that to the AAP and the AMA as well.
@inkandcaffeine
@inkandcaffeine Год назад
its true, this generation of children taking these drugs long term IS the experiment & it breaks my heart that we may find out terrible consequences in the next 5-15 years but instead of being cautious & starting with metal health therapy and other types of support the medical field instead pushes drugs onto kids that we do NOT know the lifelong effects! instead of being honest they are saying "well so far it hasnt caused problems" when lifelong medication could potentially not show issues until years into the treatment! edit/addition: some of the biggest proponents of child transition have blatantly said they are observing that kids taking these drugs who have become adults are now showing improper brain + body development and are unable to have pleasure and bonding that comes from sexual acts. but instead of telling the public about a side effect they HAVE observed, they are keeping it quiet so they can keep gathering data with uninformed patients
@alexbennet4195
@alexbennet4195 Год назад
@@leeannsolice7473 so in other words every other country is irrelevant and your opinion is entirely dictated by whatever the two American organisations are currently saying? Like, the UK has literally already been through this, going from “puberty blockers are completely reversible” to “actually wait, we need to research this further, because we just jumped on this treatment without fully conducting any studies (for the efficacy of their use in these circumstances) and actually don’t know whether they’re helping or harming” after an actual evaluation. Norway’s medical body has been the most recent country to join in as reassessing them as not sufficiently safe. And like it does in so many other areas, it looks like the US is lagging behind. It’s also the only country with an insane for-profit healthcare system, so making money over providing suitable care might be a bit of a factor in why many corporations are so keen to push drugs into children that haven’t been fully tested.

Especially during puberty, disturbing the endocrin system is very questionable. I'm a pharmacist, and this is very worrying to me. The medical professional always has to put on the possible positive outcome versus the risks on a balance. If the problem is anxiety, treating that is the first step. Not medication. But a therapist. It is already used in children with precocious puberty who need time to mature and then will resume puberty when older- like Carla's friend. That's been going on for years and no one was bothered, tried to have it banned, or compared it to castration (it's not, the dose is different & "castration" is the wrong word anyway, if it's being used on an offender they have to continue taking it to be effective, its not immediately permanent).That would be like saying using radiation therapy to treat cancer should be banned because radiation in large doses is harmful. Children taking it have a slight increase in infertility issues which is true of msny mrdications and procedures that one has to weigh, it doesn't render people taking it definitely & immediately sterile. This is misinformation and conspiratorial thinking.

Carla, I'm not one to give advice, my own struggle is real but please think long and hard before giving your son puberty blockers. Do not make him into a science experiment. If he feels and likes being a girl, love and light but do not make permeant decisions on what might be temporary emotions. Ive seen a lot of kids change their minds as they get older. I hope you are both happy and my only wish is that you Carla spoke more about your journey and how you coped with all this. The effect it has had on you as a mother?

The answer is there is some increased risk of infertility issues which is typically fairly low- they are already used on cisgender children with precocious (early) puberty like Carla's friend Fern. The parents & patient should be informed of this to make a decision that's best for them

I have all the love and respect for you and Ivy. I have children in my life that I love with gender dysphoria. It is heart wrenching to watch children struggle with it. However puberty blockers have side effects. Several studies have pointed to permanent sterilization especially for biological men, interference of gender identity formation and proper development of sexuality. In addition, studies have suggested a strong correlation between the mother’s mental health and an increase in GID, causing many to speculate if parents are mentally healthy enough to make these life changing decisions. I truly wish the best for Ivy but I think it’s vital that such important conversations be balanced. Best of luck as you continue to walk this difficult road.

How about teaching your kid to accept the things they can't change and let them develop the way nature intended? How about teaching your child that it's okay to feel uncomfortable in your own skin, and it's a perfectly normal part of child development. This is the problem with people nowadays. Parents refuse to allow their children to experience any negative feelings. Well, when all you receive is sunshine, a barren desert is what you get. Don't you want grandchildren that share your blood?

I have some thoughts I'm in the mood to share :) First thing, Good on you Mrs. Rockmore for doing what you can to make sure your child is living her best life. We all only get one shot at it, after all. I adore Jazz Jennings, but more relevant to me, (a 42 yr old mom of 4, 2 cis sons and 2 cis daughters) I adore her parents. Because of them, I've thought a lot about what I'd say/how I'd react if one of my kids told me they were trans/gay/enjoys bathing in jello, etc. I know my answer 20 yrs ago would be different than it is now, but thanks to watching shows/videos concerning these topics, I'm more informed now than I was 20 yrs ago. Now, I know my answer would simply be "I love you, how can I help?" because, at the very core of parenting, all we really & truly want is to see our babies safe, happy, and healthy. Those gifts come bundled in all kinds of equally beautiful wrapping, and just like on Christmas, it's what's inside that matters most ;)

Changing hormones changes not only the body, but also how one feels. Good luck to you, guys! Hope this leads to happy & good life! Generally though, the bigger problem is - long term consequences of hormonal disbalance and longevity. Doctors, esp. in America, play around with hormones a lot. But if you have access to statistics, and take your time to study the outcomes, you'd understand why a lot of people refrain from such therapies. I am aware of this problem with fertility treatments, for instance...

Genuine question: why should we (as in society) trust parents' intuition more than studies such as the Swedish Gender Dysphoria Study, Dr. Hilary Cass, Risk of Suicide and Self-Harm Following Gender-Affirmation Surgery Monitoring Editor: Alexander Muacevic and John R Adler, or The Amsterdam Cohort of Gender Dysphoria Study?
@Kuukiet

As a mother I would be terrified to have my child as part of this medical experiment. There's little known what kind of medical complications lies ahead. All I know based on studies is that blockers causes osteoporosis if the child doesn't go through pupertity. Also, one study in Canada showed that 8/10 children would revert back to their biological gender by the age of 18. My niece is one of those children. She wanted to be a boy at age of 6. We let her dress as one and 3 years later she wants to be a girl again. Personally I think it is important as an adult to support children while they discover their identities. However I can't support medical intervention until the child is an adult and can understand the fully of the consequences of medical transition. Therapy should be provided absolutely to everyone who is suffering gender dysphoria and I think extensive therapy would help to recognise the 2/10 who really would need the medical care and help to transition.
@dinahmyte3749
@dinahmyte3749 Год назад
Do you think people walk up to a random doctor and go "one hormone please!"... like there's steps to this... And one study isn't helpful and there's no such thing as biological gender. So... just misinformation and fear mongering.

I’m glad you recognize the importance of letting people freely explore their identity! Too many people are very black and white in their thinking when it comes to this. But also, of course many actual children will change their minds about these things-when you’re a child, say, below the age of 10 or so your whole life is about play and imagination. That is not the same situation as a young teenager having these feelings. I would also urge you to remember that in many studies about trans people changing their minds or detransitioning, they leave out the fact that the #1 reason for people doing so is because of not being accepted by their family and society. Being trans can be incredibly tough, but not because of transness in itself-but because of the world treating us so terribly. So as a trans person myself, I would hope parents also take into account the high risks for their trans kids choosing to not continue their lives if they don’t get help and support, which is a very sad reality. You cannot stop being trans. Even if some people try, it’ll never end well. Being sceptical of medical factors is valid, no matter what it’s about, but just keep in mind other risk factors too.

I personally lean on the extremely cautious side of administrating these meds to young people, for reasons I won't get into. But you are so correct that it is the parents, child and medical professionals only, that should be involved. And that if the parents don't agree that the concerns of both are validated and no one should be disregarded or penalized for their concerns. Schools & government should be absolutely, completely out of this... As it has created chaos.

As a conservative, I didn't realize that the options that your family seeks are being limited. My opinion is that school administrators are going over parents heads and helping students arrive at these life altering decisions without parental knowledge. That's where I draw the line. That is the position of most conservatives I know of as well. As a 60 year old, I distinctly remember permission slips being required for females to obtain a lesson on menstruation and available products to meet the need at the school. The boys were so puzzled as to the reason why only the girls were leaving the classroom to participate. I agree with the way it was handled. I have no issue with what YOU DECIDE is best for YOUR FAMILY because that's YOUR PRECIOUS CHILD and I disagree with the state being able to lead any child in this very complex issue to a certain conclusion that THEY DECIDE. With the state of abysmal test scores nationwide, teachers should be focusing on the 3 R's and leave the parenting to the parents. I wish you the best and hope your child gets what's appropriate for your unique set of circumstances. Good luck. I love you both!

I appreciate you sharing here. Thank you for your support for parents being allowed to guide and care for their children. Unfortunately, that is not the stance which many conservatives seem to be taking. In many US states, laws are being passed to strictly limit or completely ban gender affirming care for trans minors, and in some cases, there is a push to get rid of gender affirming care for adults as well. It is not just about schools or keeping teachers from going above parents’ heads. From my vantage point, it seems that many conservatives are out to end gender affirming care for trans folks completely. It is very frustrating because people don’t understand that most trans minors are getting only puberty blockers until they are old enough and have mental maturity to make decisions which will cause more permanent changes. Again, thank you for your respectful comment and for respecting the rights of parents to make decisions to support their children. I hope that more moderate folks like you will choose to speak up when the rights of parents to help their children receive medical care is being threatened and blocked by people who disagree with that care for ideological reasons.

I can't believe people are out there justifying blocking puberty like that. Damn. Like oh, just take this to block your puberty. If, in this case, a BOY blocks puberty, he can't develop physically rhe way it was intended. But he will also never be able to develop as a female, because that is just not his nature. So what happens in the end? You get a feeble person with many medical issues. I have PCOS and a very mild form, and even that puts me at a risk of developing some conditions later in life had I not had it. I can't imagine what puberty blockers must do to a healthy organism. Damn. Willingly messing up your body is crazy.

Are you joking? Defending a child's right to exist, to live (when it's your own child) is NOT the same as liking broccoli! If you seriously think the two are the same, I hope you don't have responsibility for any children. People who have to state that they are not a transhobe then inveitably go onto display transhopic attitudes, and bingo! it's happened here. There is a huge rate of suicide attempts among trans people (some successful) - starting when they are children. This has been shown to be solely due to lack of acceptance. And conversely, acceptance and respect has been shown to prevent it. Acknowledging and supporting their identity literally saves these kids' lives. There is a huge evidence base for this. Please do not insult everybody's intelligence by pretending that whether you support these kids' right to exist or not is the same as liking broccoli. The *audacity* and sheer inensitivity to write such a thing to Carla, and which everyone else can see. It speaks volumes that you are more concerned about being called out on your bigotry than you are worried about these kids. Sometimes it's ok to say nothing, you know. (And where you insist on displaying bigotry, at least own it.) I suggest you watch this as many times as you need to until you start to get it. The other people in the comments have stated that this was enlightning for them. Hopefully one day you will join their ranks, and be part of the solution rather than the problem. And your 'beliefs' will be that these kids deserve to survive and thrive.

@@kimberlydavis4772fear the last part is where there is an excess of confusion. The push to affirm has resulted in some (not all) therapists being cautious about questioning their patients. They affirm at all costs, and this has resulted in previous mental health issues, current problems in lives, a lack of previous signs of dysphoria and more being missed. Most are well intentioned. They do not want their patients to experience distress or ideation. They end up with another set of patients experiencing distress and ideation due to regret anyway. *Everything needs to be a case by case basis. There are parents that know their child is trans and they are supporting them (which is fantastic). They know their child. There are other parents that know their child most likely isn’t trans. They know that there is a good possibility that something else is going on. I do not want anyone being cruel to their child or unsupportive. I also understand that in many cases these parents also have their child best interest at heart. I can’t stand seeing people demand that all kids be removed from each set of parents because abuse, etc… It’s impossible to say they are all in the wrong by some kind of a default.

I 1000% support you, Carla! Just be aware that overwhelming majority of parents refuse to give their possibly trans-child any type of care. We need to believe children when they are consistently telling us what their gender and/or sexuality is. I feel hopeful knowing that parents like you exist in the world, Carla. We need more parents like you.

And I thought I couldn’t love your content more! Thank you for posting this a so eloquently bringing up those points. I’m sure you made a lot of kids out there feel seen and welcomed and gave allies further language to explain why this is so important

Yes!!! My trans niece had these when she was younger (15/16). The hospital also wanted to make sure she was ok mentally and she saw a therapist. My sister or I would go with her. And they just wanted to make sure she was in a safe place for her to make her decisions. The therapist said she was so delighted to find out that our family was loving and supportive. She’s 35 now and beautiful as ever.

Interesting to watch this with the backdrop of the UK NHS yesterday withdrawing puberty blockers. There is clearly another perspective to this issue which is gaining traction.

Preach!!! I am also the mother of a trans kid. Mine is nonbinary. They started taking hormones to become more feminine physically at age 18. If we had known that they would find out they’re transgender early on enough, I would have wholeheartedly agreed to puberty blockers! It would have made them more comfortable in their body to start hormone therapy before the onset of puberty! Parents need to accept their children as they are (and not as the parents see them being in ten years) and support them in being who they are! I can’t imagine not supporting my kid.

A lot of people hated puberty 💯 and a lot of people feel weird when there body changes. how about we push the idea of going to therapy and talking to someone before pushing this choice ?

The clinics for minors tend to require extensive therapy to get access to medication. Ivy was in therapy for 6 months before she started on any medications.

When we allow people to just be who they truly are and flourish, they can contribute so much more to society in such a positive way. If we can just support people on their journey to find themselves and flourish, we are ALL better off for it! Thank you to you and Ivy for being so frank about your journey together. Carla, you can be so proud of your daughter, she comes across as being strong and supported. Much love from Cape Town, South Africa

Who they truly are is who they were at birth. I wonder how many will be back to their birth gender in five years ? I do not wish anyone any harm, but don’t think many will end up staying with the gender they thought they desperately needed to change to.

@@lysbethcharbonneau2687 also i should commend you, you obviously care a lot about others but i think you may be a little too worried about other peoples lives. That can certainly be stressful, I think since the media inundated us all with trans this and trans that it can be really hard to get the facts in order. And I encourage you to sit and talk with trans people and looking up the facts about de transition. That can be really helpful and informative!

Right, because a person needs to block out their development with drugs to become their true selves. The way nature intended. 😢
