When people who are working toward a common goal do not speak the same language, they need a translator. Public health data come in many “languages,” and informaticians are specialists in the science of translation.
Translators need to know more than just the literal definition of words- they need to know what is most important for the various parties to understand, based on their different needs and motivations.
