All of it is incredible - the heavily dub-influenced bass is amazing, too. I'm not really that into the Pistols, but PIL is out of this world, to me. Love the use of phaser/flanger and chorus sounds here on the guitar - sooo good.
Saw them play in New York, Palladium Theater. Mick Jones and Jerry Harrison seated not too far from me (they were not together!). Quite the apocalyptic show.
Keith Levine and his Travis Bean inventing Post Punk with PIL. Good to remember just how important Metal Box was. Goodbye Keith and thanks for all the music.
Hearing Metal Box for the first time with a few mates we were looking at each other thinking WTF is this ?! After a few listens it became a classic , Keith’s guitar work made it so different to what was happening at the time . RIP Keith 🎸⭐️🎸⭐️🙏🏻
RIP Keith Levene. The way Lydon keeps looking at Keith, (the "Yes" roadie), almost unbelieving of the sound coming from his guitar is classic. Even with the indomitable Jah Wobble driving the sound. Steve Howe would have been proud.
Great live performance hi quality recording with a relaxing hypnotic atmospherics ambience for the first PIL song. The second song is more dynamic energetic powerful with a crazy weirdly apocalyptic atmospherics ambience. This is a good example of PIL contrasting Song's a trade mark of what is PIL: Original, Rich, Finest, Smart, Unconventional, Experimental,No commercial & Avantgarde Live Band!
What an incredible song, this is about a girl who was abducted and gangraped by a group of men. When questioned by the police all she could remember was that she was dragged into a "Japanese car", the "smell of rubber on concrete tar" and that they were playing what she called "Poptones" on the cassette player One of the greatest and most beautiful songs ever written.
All cylinders. All powered. You can only grasp the horror of this song from PIL's live performances. I missed them this early but, got the Box on the day it was released in the states. I saw them later with John McGeoch on guitar.
A Junkie guitarist + a great drummer that they apparently don't really get on with + a man who has no experience playing a bass guitar + a man who writes words but really can't "sing" = brilliance.
I remember my brother getting a cassette deck & putting 2 microphones on the TV speaker when this was transmitted in 1980. I had to stfu whilst this was on. PiL were light years ahead. Even Lydon knows in 2022 that he is not this good .
Public Image Limited - PopTones, Careering Live The Old Grey Whistle Test 12.02.80. 10.3.24. the best line up....? a very self indulgent band......nice to see musicians get over themselves eventually as well as big A's ire... the anti music agenda must have visited either that or the big A's visiting aunt Irma.....
The Pistols was either a profiteer's scam or a conceptual art performance piece, depending on your frame of reference. This, on the other hand, is music made by artists.
The back cover of second edition is on the music stand this has all the lyrics albeit in an unusual printed form BTW if you had this copy only the vinyls were only red/black green / yellow and no titles for the tracks anywhere For years I didn't know what each track was I guessed albatros careering pop tones
I think to appreciate this, you need to hear it on 10 grands worth of audio equipment, blasting out in an empty warehouse. Getting feed back off Bob Harris beard, just doesn't cut it man.
In a way you can look at this as a total Joy Division rip. But that wouldn't be right either because John is ahead of the game at this point. Weird shit/weird Thoughts.
