A lot of these films were made on a very low budget by Richard Taylor Cartoon Films.Frozen Ponds and Learn to swim I worked on for Richard and we were very pleased with the result. They are all drawn on paper, traced onto cell and back painted. Learn to swim is unusual as it has no drawing lines and is the paint meeting paint to make the image, this was very painstaking and caused us to go way over budget. We liked doing these films because it gave the artistic freedom to try new things. There was a team of 5 or 6 working on these films.
John Taylor my favorite was Charlie the cat, I remember some of the others but I wasn't born till 73, different times altogether, who would leave a baby in a perambulator outside now? 😂 but seriously some of these public information films should be brought back & up dated or am I just nostalgically pissing against the wind? 😂
The little synth lick in "Learn to swim" was taken directly from Rick Wakeman´s "King Arthur"; do you remember if good ole Rick collaborated with the short?
I'm from the US of A and I must say that I really like your Public Information Films! Over here we call them Public Service Announcements or PSAs for short. I love how hard-hitting many of these commercials are! I sometimes wish that more United States PSAs were so hard-hitting! They might get their points across better! Thanks for posting these!
These films are marvellous really. There is a simplicity and charm about them. Even the supposedly scary ones have a naivety about them, even when they are direct and rather blunt in putting their message across. These films communicate their point without sensationalizing the facts about risk or danger, which even in these times is refreshing. When was it the world went so irredemably and completely mental, can anyone tell me?
It used to be, that's the thing. It genuinely used to be completely fine - there was much less chance of baby snatching or anything like that. In fact, here in Norway it's still commonplace for babies to be left outside cafes in prams whilst the parents have a coffee inside, or at daycare centres. relocation.no/babies-sleeping-outdoors/ Norway is a (largely) safe country, and the brisk cold air is great for the health of babies :)
It just goes to show how things have changed. The advice back then was to check the ice on frozen ponds and make sure your children are supervised before they play on it. Never mind actually suggesting that playing on frozen ponds or lakes is quite dangerous and should be avoided altogether. I loved the 1970's
rentaghost75 are you kidding? Everybody goes on Frozen ponds and lakes in the winter, if the ice is thick enough. Where the hell are you from? Hawaii? People drive snowmobiles, sometimes even cars on it. It just depends on how cold it is, you have to test the ice with drills and things.
How times change, even 20 years ago you would have had the local council do gooders take that baby off you constantly having meetings to decide when theyre gonna have the next one.
"Excuse me, who's watching these babies?" "Uh, the fat one is watching the little one?" "Oh nice parenting. Leave them out here and see what happens" "Yo fuck you, you fucking square!" :D
I worked on these ones back in the day. We broke our backs for the puppet masters. Hopefully, a few lives were saved. The baby one freaked me out & everyone was in tears when we saw the first screening. Some took many weeks off work to recover (which happened to coincide with the Ashes tour).
And he founded Private Eye magazine, starred in That Was the Week that Was, I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue and narrated The Trap Door. I still miss him today.
It's a joke: it's implying you should use the dip-switch that's already provided- it's not going on about going to the garage to get a dip-switch installed.
What I learned from this video: You can encounter flying motorcycles. There are people who run around on the roads that wear headlights on their heads. Propane gas likes to complain a lot about the lack of space, perhaps store it in larger tanks to prevent a deadly explosion and fire? Zig zag lines on the road bite people! Wood post-and-rail fencing is ideal for keeping cars from falling into the abyss as it quickly conforms to the car with good strength. Cats love to stand on walls in front of hospitals. It is not a good idea to teach a child water safety by live demonstration. People can dive backwards from the pool back onto the diving board! Driving is like playing a game of space invaders. Oceans, like propane gas, often complain.
Things I learned from this video: The British tradition of complaining about things is so strong it can even transfer to fluids and gases that are otherwise inanimate. ;-)
@@ddragon8154 There's an American trend to label any woman who complains as a "Karen" . But there are times when their complaint is valid - and equally a man could say the exact same words..... I wonder what they call. him ?
The cycling one and the ice and snow on windscreens needs to be revised and enforced today. In the depths of winter you see lazy drivers with iced up windows and only a small slit cleared on the front screen. They only need to get out 5 minutes earlier and clear them properly. When my car is covered with snow I get my sweeping broom and sweep ALL the snow from it whilst the motor is running to demist the screens.
We dont have snow any more. Shocked last year twice first time since 2010. Namby pamby pussys nowadays just a dusting brings whole south to a close setting panic in. Quite right wish i could find te public info original film on cyclist and show it to the righteous hell bent video clan.
I remember them all. (Thank you) They scared the shit out of me and made me aware of the danger all around. I have been safe all my life whilst all these young snowflakes are maimed and killed all over the place.
There is a desperate need for the cycling one to be shown to today's cyclists. Back when it was made there was the cycling proficiency scheme around all the schools in Britain. I did mine in 1973. Kids weren't allowed to ride their bikes to school unless they'd passed the test and been awarded the badge (I still have mine in a drawer somewhere). The scheme taught kids all about the highway code (and that it does actually apply to cyclists!!) in preparation for when they grew up and moved onto mopeds, motorcycles and cars. Things like a red traffic light means stop for everybody. One ways streets mean one way for everybody. A cyclist using a pedestrian crossing must dismount and push the bike across. Correct hand signals and when to use them. If the scheme was still in place we wouldn't have so many reckless and idiotic belligerent cyclists spoiling the roads for everyone, including pedestrians and other cyclists.
I remember that. If they were being shown on the BBC, an announcer would always say that at the end, in case some idiot mistook it for an advert and wrote to the daily mail to complain.
Still scare me now! I love the message, its ok to take a chance on frozen lakes, H&S would be on our screens full time these days, eg. YOU WILL GO BLIND IF YOU PLAY WITH CONKERS lol. Thanks for sharing.
@electrogeek77 I suspect it's about as safe now as it was then, but the generation of kids scared witless by these adverts are now parents themselves and it's become something of a no-no.
They are being jokey-sarcastic. It's as if they aren't fitted. ( Of course every car is fitted with one- but seemingly not every driver knows about this "invention" .
9:05 These are the parts of the world where malaria is common...so before traveling to poor...ahem..."hot" countries ask your doctor about anti-malaria tablets.
Could not stop mysel pissing, been the first time round, still fuckin funnny!!!!!! 55 going on 56 STILL fuckin funny, ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF LUDICRESS!!!!!!
These were commonplace in areas where mains electricity either wasn't available at all, was in too great a demand to go around everyone (The 70s actually saw timetabled blackouts to work around the problem), or was otherwise not convenient (Esp. in outhouses and sheds). Perfectly safe, *if* sensible precautions were always adhered to. :-)
Simon Collins I don’t understand that. That PIF was filmed in ‘79, right? When the U.S. was starting to have issues about missing children? Wasn’t the UK having a problem back then?
