In my opinion, whatever gets people out in the woods to carry on our tradition as long as its legal is ok by me. Love watching you and Daniel on these videos, i learn a ton, and you guys are definitely some of the best public land hunters on RU-vid. Another awesome episode.
I don’t care if someone hunts crossbow regular bow recurve rifle whatever it is as long as they are having fun being safe and enjoying god’s beautiful woods I’m cool with it! Love hearing me some Jeremy and Daniel just sharing experiences and WHAT they think not absolutely know it’s a great video for me!
Jeremy, first of all, I absolutely love this channel and all of the content you & Daniel put out. I have been doing an 8 to 10 day rutcation trip every year to the Midwest for quite a few years, and it is by far my most anticipated thing every year, & have been doing the public land grind exclusively even here at home, so there is so much I can relate to watching y’all. I have been following you for a few years now, and this has 100% became my favorite RU-vid channel. I am currently into my 35th year of bow hunting, with the last 7 years being with a crossbow, & I can say it is just another tool that has advantages and definitely has disadvantages! Lord knows I have had my share of mishaps like you did here in this video lol. But keep up the great work man, because I know I’m speaking for lots of people when I say we look forward to each video!
sold both my compound bows about 15 years ago. Loved archery since boy scouts when I was a kid. Love target practice. always have. Just bought my first crossbow 3 weeks ago. Shot it 10 times so far. loving it. Glad it is an option. I have short legs and short arms too. Just relalized Ive been bow hunting for years with a huge disadvantage. my crossbow with a CCD takes all that away. I bought a crossbow where the crank isnt part of the stock and isnt easily removable for the exact reason you show in this video "I am going to take that crank off and lose it" I think I made a good call for myself.
I already walked about three miles in the woods got all set up with a clamber. Went to put a bolt in the bow. You guessed it left my arrows in the back of the truck. Pretty dumb. Got back to the truck i parked on a smalk place off the road and to make matters worse ny truck slid down the bank and up against a tree. After about 2 hours and 4 cars passed me a fine young man stopped and pulled me out of the bank. About half the back of the truck all scratched up. Hunting is so much fun. Went home and drank a few cold ones and was not a happy camper. Needless to say went out the next day rememberd to take ny arrows and park the truck in a safe place. Sat that day till dark seen one Squirrel. Happy Hunting. Am 76 now and still hunting but will never forget that day. Still hunting yet but hope i dont forget where i parked my truck.
Last November (‘22), the day before Thanksgiving I bought a B3 Hook release ($85’ish). Used it that same evening. Early the next morning I went to get my bow out of the truck and the release was not on it. I initially looked all through the truck, checked my pack, pants pockets. It was gone! I dropped it somewhere in the walk from the location I hunted and back the truck. The hunt spot was about 35 minutes from home. I drove back out and looked in the parking area, walked the 3/4 mile in to where I had hunted and looked all around. The dang thing was gone. Man I was pissed 😡
The biggest disadvantage of a crossbow to me is a possible 2nd shot....even with a crank. Lots of movement to get set up for another shot...but it can done. As stated earlier, it's not a big as an advantage as people think.
@Bradb-bp4si don't get off track here. You must still draw a compound in front of game. Are modern bows better and more of an advantage than a stick bow, ABSOLUTELY they are. If cross bow hunter's would be required to draw their "bow" in the presence of an animal as every other traditional or modern compound bow is required to do then I'd say let them have at it, but you can't. Crossbows are cocked, sitting and waiting ready to fire.
I used to be against crossbows during archery season until I actually shot one a few times. They’re heavy and cumbersome, hard to hold steady without a rest, loud and not very easy to use in a treestand. Honestly, I can shoot my compound better free hand. I still don’t use one but not for the same reasons as I used to
I think that it's a free country and we can all make our own decisions on what to use. I use a crossbow and I love it! Now I am at a disadvantage with a compound bow since I have had both shoulders operated on but I got into hunting later in life and I was immediately drawn to using a crossbow. What I mean by later in life is around 30. Had I started younger then I would have probably gotten into using a compound bow. Hunt often and have a great day!
Keep the crossbow stuff comin’ I’ve been hunting with compounds and trad bows since the 80’s. because of arthritis in my shoulder I have days I have trouble using the compound. The crossbow is ready to go in that situation and keeps me hunting. I used to be against crossbows, but I sure took a shine to ‘em’ now that some days my backs against the wall. Good job and keep the content flowing boys!
Crossbow hunter here …. I also use the tooth of the arrow Broadheads but I use the 150 gr. they are great heads. Keep up the good work and good luck!!!
I switch to a crossbow this year at 73. Still not convinced that I'll stick with it. My son got one also and already sold it and went back to his compound.
First year hunting with a crossbow. Getting older so I figured I would give it a try. Used a compound for many years. I use it with my summit climber. I hunt in a small area with 8 or 9 homes around so using a fire arm is out of the question. A crossbow allows me pin point accuracy with little movement such as required drawing a compound or recurve. It’s important I deliver a vital hit so the deer doesn’t Tavel far. Like someone’s back yard. Yesterday I used it on a deer using the same broad head you use. Traveled 60 yards heart shot. These heads fly like practice tips. In both my compound and crossbow.
I use a hair tie on my tenpoint....goes thru the hole in the stock and wraps around the handle of the crank to secure it......cool video and great footage! Thanks jeremy!
When I had a Ten Point Accuslide bow I either used a small bungee ball to keep the crank handle secure or a piece of stretch cord mounted on the bow that I could slip over the crank handle knob to keep it in place. I also kept a spare handle in my pack. Those handles are too expensive to lose!
I think as we get older things change and we do things we would never do when we were younger. I use my dad’s crossbow that I inherited after he passed away. I still use my compound as well. So I’m good either way
I say hunt with and shoot whatever makes you happy. I purchased a crossbow last year but have yet to hunt with it. I did purchase a spare crank and carry it in my pack just like a spare bow release in my pack. Single point failures will bite you. Another great video. Much respect!
I've busted up both of my arms and needed surgery on both the last few years. I've hunted with a crossbow because of it. I had an old excalibur that was big and cumbersome to hunt with. It was crazy to hunt from a stand with. This year I needed surgery a month before season so I had to buy a tenpoint with a crank. It's much heavier than a bow. So heavy I laid it across the front of my climber instead of hanging it. It shoots nice. I didn't buy the most expensive model, rather, one of the least expensive ones. I have truly enjoyed using a crossbow and am glad they allowed me to stay out and hunt. I killed a buck and a doe this year with mine. Next year I am reducing my compound weight to its minimum and going to try to get back out there and hunt with it.
Them xbows are dam sure heavy ,bulky, noisey, but deadly. Compounds are light, nimble, quiet and just as deadly. Choose your poison my friend . Awesome followin ya’ll around 👍🏻👍🏻
I hunted with compound’s & recurves for 25 years. I’ve had a shoulder surgery, 2 back surgeries & I’ve been hunting with crossbows the last 11 years. I absolutely love hunting with a crossbow. Keep the crossbow videos coming. 🦌🦌
I have both, compound and a crossbow. I prefer my compound, but a crossbow levels the playing field when it comes to draw length, arrow weight, poundage etc. You hit a deer with a crossbow, and you will easily get a pass through. Someone using a compound with a 27" draw, 50lbs may not. Yes, shot placement has a lot to do with it but let's be real, you don't always hit the boiler room. Just my take. Enjoy watching your videos.
Ive lost two crank handles this season! I'm finally keeping it in my pocket. I switched to crossbows about 10 seasons now. They are a chore to carry but put a lot more meat in the freezer. Love your show keep it up!
Crossguns are ok. I like using them during gun season because the safety zones are lot closer for them in my state and deer tend to hide near houses when the guns are blasting. They should probably have their own season though. They're definitely not archery.
I use a crossbow due to necessity. My right arm was messed up in a wreck when I was young and I can’t shoot a regular bow however, that is one disadvantage to the mechanical cocker. I use string cocker for mine and i carry extra , one in backpack and one in pocket . I am very accurate out 65 yards 370 ft Xbow would not hesitate 50-60 yard in right conditions. 3 arrows 2” group 60 yards isn’t bad with messed up right arm . I have tryed public land but it’s tough for a man with no disabilities , so with them the slogan grind just scratches the surface lol 😂!! Thanks fir the videos
As old age come alone. My eyes will not let me shot my peep anymore so now i use a pse fang and i love it. I didn't understand about putting the cross bow back. I pull mine back with my hands. Your bow must be very hard to pull.
Hey Jeremy another 10 Point crossbow shooter here. And I wondered while watching that last episode how long it was going to take before you lost your crank handle. I've lost mine twice while walking in or out and. got lucky and found it both times by retracing my steps. I carry mine in a zipped pocket now. One advantage I like about the crossbow is the ease of getting off a shot without being detected if I'm hunting on the ground. Hope you found your crank.
Enjoy your videos. I use a vertical crossbow these days - a Hickory Creek Mini. It’s much easier to handle in a tree than my Ravin R26. The R26 sits in the closet. Thanks for your hard work and valuable information.
Crossbow hunter for the last 10 yrs since I messed up my shoulder. I miss shooting a compound though for sure and may have to try this year since I've been working out the last year my shoulder has gotten way stronger and doesn't hurt me all the time like it did.I also have a 11yr old daughter that wants to get into archery so it would be awesome to be able to do that with her wether she will ever hunt or not.lol Hopefully she will because I was able to buy her lifetime sportsman license before she was 3 just incase (fingers crossed).
I’ll be honest. I don’t see the advantage of a crossbow for mobile hunters. I’m sure I’ll catch hell for that but who wants to haul that around and set one up. Hunting permanent stands or private is a different story but I’m not carrying that big joker around 😅
I hunted with it a week and I agree with you. The only thing I like better on the crossbow is the scope. I can aim and see a spot with pin on a bow a can't.
Either way, dead is dead. If I am in a tree, I prefer my compound, for sure. And sitting on the ground. I like my crossbow. Don't feel bad, most of my hunts, I forget, drop or lose something, arrows, release, even left home without my bow. I enjoy your show. Thank You
Not going with my gut to get down and move cost me my biggest buck this year. Happened twice as a matter of fact. Granted it wasn’t moving to a new spot I just felt I needed to be in a tree 30yds further from where I set up in the dark. I didn’t move trees and watched a solid 135” deer walk 15yds from that tree. At 45yds he was further than I like to shoot. Still kicking myself two weeks later.
@@doityourselfhunter9031 2nd season for me with an R29 crossbow, and now carry it for miles and any elevation. Bullseye’d a nice buck at 60 yards Oct 31. Just can’t find my bolt with the ToA Broadhead. It doesn’t slow down. Two shots, two deer, zero ToA bolts found.
Those were great sits, and great Intell on why you chose each spot. Whatever stick and string a person’s heart desires to harvest a deer is cool with me. During the 2nd day of my 8 day rutcation, I too lost my Ten Point cocker. A $100 later and losing a half day of hunting I was back in the woods. Now I keep it in my pocket while hunting. But I like the ideas mention here about a Velcro strap. Thanks Jeremy for another great episode!
I have rope pull on mine on a mission sub 1xr , along with a spare cocking rope in my pack . We also draw some of them without the rope cock . I hunt for food so crossbow is my friend especially when it shoots 1” groups at 100 yards back to you . I do believe if crank don’t work you can still use rope cocking device on any of them . Keep your a spare rope cocker in your bag. I know we hand draw my cousins center point sniper 370 and uncles 385 don’t quote me on them numbers lol . But if the kid forgets his cocking rope me or my cousin both have cocked and de-cocked the crossbows for his boy and his dad .
Yes sir that happened to me. I bent my foot Sterup I would never use a bow hanger again hero clip is the only way to go with the Tether strap especially for using with crossbow they way too much as far as the crank you definitely need one if you’re going to hunt out of a saddle the platform is too small. I have the Tether XL that seems to be the perfect size as far as the saddle you can hunt all the way around the tree you never have a bad spot you just have to watch the limbs don’t hit or strike limbs. 👍 I was in the movie Jeremiah Johnson when Chris said to Jeremiah I seen it right off. You didn’t dig your hole deep enough.🤣🤣😂😂
That's why I opt for a rope cocker. But I still wish I could use my Hoyt. Just can't get used to the crossbow. Accurate beyond belief. Aggravating; absolutely!
I hunt a Parker youth/ Ladies crossbow..it's smaller a compact..I like that you can hunt on the ground or in a tree..To me there is less movement to get into shooting position and you don't have to draw the bow and potentially wait minutes for an open shot.
I’ve bowhunted for 35 years and 30 of that was with a compound and would still be using one if it wasn’t for heath issues. The pluses of a crossbow bow is I’m more accurate with one with a rest but it’s aggravating humping a combersom crossbow and a shooting stick around and forget a second shot which is easy with a compound.
Funny we traveled out of state to Wisconsin this rifle season first time different experience saw one deer the entire time 3 public spots 10 miles walked and 3 miles kayaking. What we learned go early Nov with our bows rifle season on public in central Wisconsin west of Menominee WI sucked but learned a lot saw hundreds of dead deer driving back to ND so deer do live in WI
That buck jumped the string , the few times I shot mine I forget it’s still a bow and forget the yardage but my old drywaller shoulder don’t like regular bow
Bow hunted for 40 years ,I’m 57 and always wanted to hunt with a crossbow. Last year during off season spur of the moment I sold my Mathews and bought a TenPoint, I realized I really don’t know how many seasons the Lord will give me and made the switch. Kinda over what all my bow hunting buddies think anyway.
@@doityourselfhunter9031 yes that’s another plus of a crossbow is the light gathering capability of a scope. I missed a chance on a nice buck one time because I couldn’t see through my black peep site. I then switched to a G5 blue peep but it still isn’t as bright as a scope.
Bet you ordered two of the cocking cranks :). One for the pack and one for the crossbow. It's a lesson that many of us learn once but not many have to learn this one twice. I keep the crank with the xbow when it's stored but when I hit the woods, after the first "cranking" it goes into my pants pocket like all other essentials. Seriously, if you didn't, get an extra one and stick it into the pack. Enjoying the videos.
First thing I did when I got my buck hung up to clean . They was stinking my van up all the way home for a hour and half ride lol. The smell of success all the way and day or 2 later lol
I grew up shootin a compound only but now use both. Just depends on what I feel like taking that day. I have some stands that are set up better for compound and some better for xbow. My experience is that it's not as easy using a xbow as everyone thinks. But I still think xbow should not be in regular bow season. Once they legalized xbow for everyone to use in my state, my public land spots that I used to have all to myself are filled up with xbow hunters. Everybody that used to only be gun hunters have now picked up a xbow which doubles the hunting pressure during bow season now. And there are people that treat a xbow like a gun and take unethical shots. I know that happens with compound hunter too but it's even worse with alot of xbow guys
I hunt with an Excalibur crossbow. I changed for a couple of reasons. First, I have issues with both my shoulders that shooting a bow would aggravate. Second, I don't have a lot of time to practice. I'm retiring next June, and intend to test the waters with the shoulders with a few of the traditional bows I have.
Enjoy your shows! Tried crossbow for kids when they were young and couldn't pull enough poundage on regular bow. Just felt they were loud and not all that, but they have improved alot. Yes do use hocks from bucks but only on another property than where they were killed. Makes bucks think another moved into their territory.....
A lot of hunters bash on crossbow hunting. Not sure why, you still have to get close, still have to raise and aim. They’re actually heavier and more difficult to carry and they’re cumbersome in a tree stand compared to a compound or recurve. It’s legal why does it matter? Does it affect those hunters, hunt somehow? Idk I believe in hunt your hunt, I’ll hunt mine. As long as it’s not illegal, go for it. Imo
I like the Bow but I sure don’t knock the crossbow guys. I’ve been using them glands all my life. We tie them onto the top of our boots and walk in with them. Enjoy all yalls stuff
Agree with you - aggravating- and I ain’t found one yet I can’t tear up - I’ve torn up 4 of them - on my 5th one. May try to back down my compound and try it again. Thank you for these true to life hunting adventures - I love em - reminds me of me!!!!
Had to switch to a crossbow a few years ago due to shoulder injury. You still have to hunt for them and make the shot. I've never lost my crank handle, but two years ago during rifle I lost the ocular lens out of my scope. I was two miles deep into a really good public land spot with no way to shoot. It sucks!!!!!
Go with your gut feeling , everyone I don’t I end up regretting it. I just sit and weigh all the options back and forth until something just clicks. Sitting till 2pm and no deer I would probably just stay till dark
Part of the grind fo sho. You ask if we ever have mishaps, I may be the master 😂. Me and my son got up early one October morning heading with my jet boat to hit the public land on our local river. We got there and was loading the boat when my son said “crap, I forgot my bow”. So back we went to the house to get it lol. I have lots of these stories but to be honest they are wonderful memories.
Being from Georgia, I love shooting a crossbow, my shoulder doesn't allow me to hunt with a compound bow anymore so if not for the crossbow I would have to skip archery season, plus it allows my 8 year old grandson to hunt archery season since there's no way he can pull back a compound bow with the required 45lbs, also my wife is now hunting with me since she doesn't like shooting a gun and can't really pull back a compound bow, but the crossbow is perfect for her.......I also hate using a cocker, that's why I shoot a Wicked Ridge Vital X 405, you just cock it manually, manually pretty much works all the time. No need to have that cocker.
I like the Excalibur crossbow personally with the cocking aid. No crank. Where I hunt in canada it can be down as cold as -15 to -20 Celsius in the last month of the season. I’ve always struggled with the compound in those temps because of the bulkiness of my cloths. Most of my life I hunt with the compound from early season until the mercury dips then I switch to crossbow. That said I have raging tennis elbow and I can’t get much more then 4-5 shots of practice in at a time with the compound so I’ve been using the crossbow most of the season. I owe it to the animal.
My dad used to use kocks off bucks often. I don't know anyone that never really hunted but in Choctaw, Montgomery and Webster counties in Mississippi that killed as many quality bucks as he did.
Well I used to love my compound bow. Used to down a crossbow as cheating. Then I messed up my shoulder and found out don’t knock a crossbow until you’ve tried it. Not at all like carrying your rifle. I glad they legalized them in my state or I would have to miss now season. Thanks for the great videos..
I had to switch to a crossbow a few years ago and my biggest dislike is carrying it to and from the stand, it is also awkward for me to have it in the stand. Really miss my bow. Im fine with anyone hunting with their choice as long as it's legal.
Tbh, before I move I really have to review the conditions that made me decide to hunt the spot I’m considering leaving and decide if I’m leaving because I believe there’s a better setup or from fear of missing out. I’ve ignored the urge to move a couple of times to have success in the spot I originally chose.
