That's Steve Bales, in charge of guidance. He had to deal with several problems that arose during the landing and make some very last minute decisions on the "go no go". Gene Kranz writes in his book about the powered descent. (Steve Bales is the GUIDANCE officer): "I tell the controllers to make their Go NoGo decision based on the last data they think is valid. I trust enough in their judgment and the spacecraft to keep descending without data for a while. I go rapidly around the horn, and all controllers are Go, especially Bales. His “Go!” resounds clearly through the room like a cymbal. He does not need a voice loop today. I chuckle as I continue polling the controllers."

@davidtaylor4717
@davidtaylor4717 2 года назад
didn't the moon landings happen in part due to the posturing of rival superpowers?
@tostare
@tostare 2 года назад
@@davidtaylor4717 Yes and that's an irony - one of the greatest feats of cooperation was born of competition. It's worth noting though that NASA's Russian counterparts also celebrated when Armstrong sent his famous "The eagle has landed" message. For them it was a victory for mankind and science, not a loss for Russia: even though they wished it had been them, they were glad that *someone* did it, and the truth is that they never really stood a chance of getting to the moon first - their program had suffered too many setbacks, most notably the death of their genius Chief Designer, Sergei Koryolev, the man who had put Russia in space first.

@panostsak
@panostsak 2 года назад
@@tostare Good point. It can also be argued that the Soviets had a small "victory" in the competition (like the rest of humanity), because although it was two completely opposing world-views between the USA and the USSR, it wasn't some billionaire entrepreneur like Elon Musk who put an American on the moon, but a space programme that was using public funding instead (in a similar way to the Soviet space programme). Obviously it's more complicated than that, but if you wanted to prove to the Russians that "our way" is better, it would be done in a purely capitalist way by some private giant corporation with its own space programme. So in a sense the Soviets got their point across: to achieve big things you do need people to come together to work towards a common goal.

I think it's because NASA spent a long time trying to be very sober and serious about space travel, and accidentally stripped away a lot of the romance, something that only got rediscovered recently. Because romance and awe is NOT a lesser reason to do something! There's nothing wrong with acknowledging that sense of wonder, that thrill of what's over (or above) the horizon. I feel that same sense of awe when I read or see videos about exoplanets, the Cassini or New Horizons missions, or seeing that first aircraft on Mars. It's millions of dollars being spent on optimism, in a world where billions are spent on cynicism.

I first heard this track on leaving my friends funeral service in the church a few months ago, he died tragically but something positive came out of it for me. Thank you Andy for introducing me to PSB.

The juxtaposition of history and music that seems simple but perfectly interprets an amazing piece of our thirst for knowledge. Top lads, great music.

What I wouldn't give to have seen this in person. This music video alone stirs pride and wonderment within me. We humans LEFT THE PLANET! How incredible is that? I like to think of times like this when things are daunting or I start losing faith in humanity. I like to remind myself of all the amazing things we've accomplished thus far, and that we are capable of such incredible things.

A friend of mine, knowing I was a huge space-program nerd (especially the Apollo program) recommended this to me. He was right, I loved it! Even without the added Apollo sights and sounds it's still a very good track on its own - the rest is just the cherry on the top! I've just purchased it on iTunes and will definitely be giving the rest of your work a listen to!

Just got back from watching Professor Brian Cox's Horizons show, and this was the credits song - I can't think of any better song for it. The landmark, the opening of the science fiction future we all came into, and while it may have been a false start, I truly believe we're going to go and stay some time, be it with Artemis or some other series of missions. Space is just too curious not to explore - we just have to do it before it's too late for us. Godspeed and safe flying, humanity. 07

Hous - Houston, Tranquility. Do you have a way of showing the configuration of the engine arm circuit breaker? Over. The reason I'm asking is because the end of it appears to be broken off. I think we can push it back in again. I'm not sure we could pull it out if we pushed it in, though. Over.
