Altengrad is a time-progression series where I build a Central European city, located until 1989 in the Eastern Bloc, taking inspiration from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. The series starts around the year 1920 and slowly advances forward in time, which means the city will naturally evolve all the way to modern times. The city is not a recreation of any one real-life city or country, but it takes inspiration from them.
PC specs are in the channel's About page. No, the game doesn't run like this in real time. Cinematics are recorded slow and made faster in editing.

Congratulations on 100 episodes! been watching this build since the beginning. I almost feel as if im an altengrad citizen....watching the city change throughout the decades. Cant wait what the future holds for this build. its the most educational and intricate diorama i have ever seen. Here's to 100 more episodes. "I'm so glad they finally did something at the station. That place was in desperate need of renovation. It was so dangerous at night!"

What a cool project to cap off the first hundred episodes. Maybe I'm kooky, but I personally really dig the blue post-modernist station building. I think I would practically live in that rooftop garden if it were real - a cup of tea, a book, and some nice relaxing greenery... it would probably rarely be overcrowded too.

Thanks for igniting my adoration for post modern architecture. I previously only associated it with McMansions, but I love how these cite the complex industrial architecture of the late 19th century, wich is very fitting for train stations, instead of engaging in some clumsy fauxenticity.

i believe Altengrad needs some new trams, given that you're still having old types from the late 50s/early 60s running around in the city. Don't retire the Tatras, but the older ones.

Damn, that train station looks like it should be hidden into the underground and expanded into another railway going under the city - don't know how it looks in other countries of the region, but in Łódź they are now building cross-town tunnel and there are long distance plans to do a similar tunnel (or tunnels) in Warsaw. As keeping a one end stations is kinda problematic. But it all depends on this how it looks on the map obviously, so not sure if it would be a good idea for Altengrad. Also, that new building looks like it is in reality a shopping mall, in Poland the new train stations are called by activists: "a shopping centre with an railway function" as there is so many shops, restaurants and cinemas in one place that the shopping functions are much more important than transit ones.

Given it's road connection has been cut off entirely for years at this point and it's rail connection is...a product of it's time, to put it lightly, most likely just repurposed into a warehouse or something.

I can’t believe this series started five years ago. I remember when it was the upstart on the channel, and I was skeptical a C:S series could do just to a city’s historic development (many have tried, few have succeeded). So many of those "greenhouses" look so like a shopping centre in Dublin (Rathfarnham). That was a distinctive enough building to feature in a few films. Its weird to see how similar some of the public transport buildings of the 90s in eastern Europe are to it!

Man it reminds me of home. I'm from Denmark but the town I grew up in, Hillerød, has a downtown shopping mall built in 1992 and it is VERY much like this. Its called Slotsarkaderne and is like a 90's postmodern pastiche of a classic shopping arcade, with building facades up the sides and the entire mall structured around a long corridor with a big blue roof like this one. There's actually a section in the middle where a busy road through town crosses the middle, so 2 big atriums are built on each side with entrances onto the road on each side and an indoor tunnel within the mall below it. Thats also the main entrance for bus riders as bus stops are just a short walk in both directions from this point.

biggest problem with postmodernism and modernism now is that postmodernism is now considered as dumb weird looking and modernism as boring and overused (also mentioning that modernistic architectures completly miss the point of this style by building giant skyscrapers and saying that its more "cheaper and economical" than building traditional looking house)

Nice video as always with a lot of information. Hope that when You get to late 2000s, early 2010s You can have a look at Katowice central station, which was torn down and rebuilt from scratch as part of preparation for EURO2012 (which never actually arrived to the city)...Euro2012 marked a massive revitalization of virtually all main train stations in all of Poland...
