When she said it's not my job to be nice but to be honest, that really made my blood boil because that's the same excuse parents give to keep criticizing their child/children. Parents need to let their kids make their own decisions in life.

Body shaming is so disgusting & unacceptable! Especially when it's from a parent to their own child. If you want to help someone feel good about themselves & increase their self esteem level & help achieve healthy body image, you should definitely try compliments rather than criticism! Nobody wants to hear about how everything they eat or drink is a poor choice! Not to mention, it's okay in moderation. If your grown daughter wants a soda with her meal, or fried rice for lunch, that's her choice. If you'd feel better ordering the salad because it's a healthier option, so be it. Doesn't mean she has to get the same exact thing you have. That's the beauty of being an adult, getting to make your own decisions! Mom can keep her rude remarks to herself. I can't believe some of the things she said, how it's so important that we keep in shape for men? What an old fashioned, out dated & unhealthy style of thinking! How about you look good for yourself & learn not to be so concerned with what others think or say?! Men (& women) should be with you because they love you, not because of a jean size or a number on a scale.💯 Not to mention, her daughter didn't even appear to be overweight, but even if she was, that's her business. Unless she brings up her weight, you shouldn't either! It's a personal matter that should be between an individual & their physician only. If your doctor recommends losing weight for health reasons, that's obviously appropriate to suggest, but nobody else need be concerned about it! Thank you for sharing this video on such an important topic! So many of us are just used to talking like this that we don't even realize how detrimental it can really be! If you have a family member like this, learn how not to imitate them, because you'll only be hurting someone you love.

Morals of the story: 1. Be honest but also be polite. 2. Certain topics are not appropriate for some settings, so think before you speak. 3. Character and happiness are more important than looks. 4. Make sure that your criticism is actually helpful rather than hurtful.

This happened to one of my female personal training students. Her mother fat and body shamed her repeatedly. My student ceased communication. It was only 7 years later that they were reconnected when they met in the park. The mother started criticising and comparing like she always used to. Then my student told her she was married, her husband was doing well in his job, she was doing well in her job. She stood up and said "I have this super cool trainer called James Bond and I have a better figure than everyone you told me about." Then my student's daughter came up and asked "who is this mummy?" my student said "Just some nasty lady. I've told you not to speak to nasty strangers." The mother then said "Is this your daughter? Am I a grandmother?" My student then said "I won't let you do to her what you did to me" and walked off. Two days later her brother in law- a lawyer served a strongly worded letter on her mother saying that if she even attempted to go anywhere near her granddaughter then she'd be reported to the police. The mother then approached me to try and intervene and I refused to help. You reap what you sow. The mother was also wrong about her getting a boyfriend or husband. As I have said elsewhere you will be VERY LUCKY to go out with a so called "plus-sized" girl. Let me explain why. I am a personal trainer and I specialize in women's fitness. I also specialize in those being listed for weight loss surgery. Firstly ladies. If you are overweight and you get in shape and a partner only shows interest when you're in shape when they've previously bullied you then show them the door. If someone is not with you during your cold dark nights of winter, they don't deserve to be with you during your warm summer days. Now let me explain. Have you seen Captain America the First Avenger? A scientist devised a serum to make an average man 10-20 times stronger. Steve Rogers was chosen for the serum because he was a 7 stone weakling with asthma and polio. He'd never known health, strength, and fitness. So when he took the serum and became a superman he'd never abuse his powers and would have compassion for those who never had it. I am training a load of "plus-sized" women to be personal trainers for the same reason. A so called "plus-sized" girlfriend would sadly have been fat-shamed like above. All she's known is rejection and ill-treatment. You show her respect and love and she'll treat you like a King. In return, I would ask you to treat her like a Queen. She'll stick with you through thick and thin- this assumes you treat her like a Queen. Of course, if she wants to get into shape then you should exercise together. The grass is not greener on the other side. The grass is greener on the side you pay most loving attention to. One thing I recommend all couples do is one day a month to take a break from one another. Then you'll realize what you are missing. I also recommend once a month you have a date night and NOTHING should get in the way of that. A super-slim lady can take her pick of the men. Anything goes wrong and she could be tempted to dump you faster than you can imagine because she can have any man she likes. There is also a BIG difference between good health and being slim. If you are overweight my advice is to find a good personal trainer and follow their program. I always tell my clients that for the first 4-6 weeks they'll gain more lean muscle and thus gain weight but they'll lose more fat in the long run because muscle weighs more than fat. However muscle burns a lot of calories! However never forget if someone is not with you during your cold dark nights of winter, they don't deserve to be with you during your warm summer days. Criticism is good only if it is the good kind-when it should be given and when it is done in the right way-not with the goal of getting the counselor's way, but with the desire of helping the person and given with love and in a peaceful manner. The one giving the criticism must always remember that the criticism might not be warranted, so they must be willing to accept that.

No one should criticize their kids like not all right for them to live their own life and eat whatever they want. Support your kids, don't give criticism like her mom did. Though Monica's mom did whatever she had to do doesn't mean that she should force her daughter to do the same thing.

Well you can be honest AND nice. You don't have to say these things in public. And you could say things more friendly like: "I am a little worried about your health, my darling." Instead of "I think, what's most important is how we look" and keeping criticizing someone for not fitting their own personal image.

I could never do this to any of my babies. Especially my girl , because i know how much i cared about my appearance as a young woman and it would have killed me if my own mom came at me this way. I think every single human is beautiful in their own ways , even if not what society deems beautiful.

Please do a remake based on my comment below where a few years later Monica has a daughter and meets up with her mother. The mother starts criticising like always and then Monica's daughter comes up and says "mommy who is this?" Monica replies "just some nasty stranger. I've told you not to talk to strangers." Monica's mother then says "Is this your daughter? Am I a grandmother?" Monica then says "I won't let you do to her what to you did to me. Your mother treated you horribly but I won't let you do that to my daughter. Goodbye and if you ever come near my daughter I'll inform the police" Then a few days later Monica sends her a lawyers letter threatening a restraining order.

I'm sure servers hear this all the time too. People eat out to socialize and connect. Last thing anyone wants is criticism.

Her mom may have been badly treated by grandmother but to project the same cycle on her was wrong. She should let her daughter have her own choices regarding meals, clothing etc. Comparing her to the best friend's wedded life was the last straw!! Mom should back down, Monica deserves the best way of being in a loving relationship and mom is too old-fashioned and judgmental!! Hopefully there's an apology soon!!

She's being a rude mom to criticize someone for how she eats calling her rice junk food.to say its not the waitress business when she talked that way in front of her made it her business i was put down for being over weight by my over weight grandma and by my aunt.i turned to food for confort many times i cried at night words really do hurt.
