In May and June 2024, some Americans received calls related to a Publishers Clearing House phone call scam. According to various Facebook users, this PCH phone call scam involved promises of millions of dollars and a free Mercedes-Benz car. The truth is Publishers Clearing House will never call to notify major winners.
Facebook users posted about receiving calls in the Publishers Clearing House phone call scam. One of the posts read, "Well, I just got a call out in New York at 8:40 PM about the prize that I won from Publishers Clearing House. He sure did ask me a lot of questions but he knew my name. He knew that I lived in Arizona and even the town. Then he asked me if I was married, single or whatever, and I refused to answer. He said if I'm really interested in winning my prize, they're gonna come out to my house and give me $5 million and a brand new Mercedes-Benz. Wow, I said. Then, he asked me if I could secure my prize by giving him $500. When I told him I don't have $500, he asked me how I live if I don't have $500. I said, 'Simple, paycheck to paycheck.' He said, 'Well, if you have a job, then why can't you afford $500?' I told him it was none of his business. Of course, I knew this was a scam, and I was just messing with this person. He eventually told me he'll call me back with more information on how to collect my prize. Of course, he's blocked. Watch out, people, especially older people who do play Publishers Clearing House. Please warn all your family and friends."
Another Facebook user posting about the Publishers Clearing House phone call scam said, "Man, that was close. I almost got scammed by [who I thought was] Publishers Clearing House. This man told me that I was a winner of a brand new 2024 Mercedes-Benz, $5 million and $5,000 a week for life. All he wanted me to do was go to Dollar General or Walmart and get two $500 gift cards. He said our car would be delivered at noon that day. I figured it was a scam, and yes, it was. Watch out!"
A different Facebook user posted, "Did anyone else get a call from Publishers Clearing House (PCH) and win $48 million and a new Benz this morning?" Yet another user also said, "If you get a call saying you won several million dollars from Publishers Clearing House, it's a scam. My husband got a call saying he won, so I called Publishers Clearing House and was told they don't call you. It's a scam. Don't be scammed!" And how about this one: "Scam. Be aware. This number just called me saying I won the Publishers Clearing House. I won 2.5 million dollars and a car. I need to get an Amazon delivery card for 99.00. Terry Bradshaw would deliver my car. Not sure if I spelled the name right. Don't fall for this. Keep sharing please."
Basically, scammers are pretending to be Publishers Clearing House and are calling potential victims hoping to lure them into giving away sensitive financial information or requesting them to buy gift cards so they can read the numbers off to pay for something.
