Exploring the historic pubs of Spitalfields - close to London's Liverpool Street station - apparently the busiest station in the UK!
As always I took a look at the architecture, the interiors, and the history of the pubs, plus a quick glimpse of the beer on offer.
Along the way lots of historical tidbits, such as the sad tale of Nathaniel Bentley - AKA Dirty Dick, pondering what happened to the dead cats, the "No person to be served twice" rule at Dirty Dick's, and that interesting this was also the case for a while at (a former incarnation of) William's Ale and Cider House round the corner. We follow a bit of the history of the Ten Bells, as it tries to keep in step with the changing number of bells at neighbouring Christ Church. At the Golden Heart we discuss Sandra Esquilant and the parallels between this pub and the Soho's Colony Room Club as a venue for artists. Finally at the Pride of Spitalfields we ponder whether this really could be a pub named after a beer...?

Excellent series. As a City of London student in the 70's I remember regularly frequenting Dirty Dicks. If my memory serves, there was a basement bar which was covered from floor to ceiling in beer mats and letters from tourists and the like. A total fire trap. Of special interest was a dessicated, mummified cat, suspended from the ceiling by a rope that was secured from behind the bar. At various times, the barkeeps would loosen the rope and the cat would slowly descend, normally on top of any attractive woman the barman had his eye on. Ah, the good old days eh?

Hi Tweedy. The Williams Ale and Cider House looks like a pub crawl in itself. Exceptional range of ales and ciders. As always thank you for an incredibly interesting tour of classic London pubs accompanied by your exemplary research. 👏👏👍😀🍺 PS. Enjoy a well deserved break. 👍😀

Just stumbled on your channel and must say your content is thoroughly enjoyable! I was always remiss that there wasn't better coverage of London's historical pubs on RU-vid. As a Yank that loves to visit the UK and attempt to visit as many pubs as possible, your channel is a gem. You are both informative and entertaining! You are doing God's work, so please keep it up. Making my way through all your videos, so thank you. Raising you a pint of Harvey's Sussex Best in spirit. Unfortunately I am in NYC, so must wait for a London visit to do so otherwise. Cheers!

Haha…I openly laughed when you visited “The Williams” as, I too, have on several occasions dismissively sauntered past what I thought was a modern bar. Thank you for peaking my future interest. Clearly, my pick of the litter is “Pride of Spitalfields” where a couple of years back I over-enjoyed a post-Joolz Guides “Ripper” tour with my fellow travelers. As always, you made my day…well done…Cheers!!! 🍻

Thanks Ed! I think it was probably the "Ale and Cider House" suffix on the Williams which put me off - which sounds ridiculous given that I very much like both ale and cider, and it did indeed have a better than average selection of both. It just didn't sound like a traditional pub name!

Thank you for yet another really interesting video. In 1974 I was visiting the Liverpool Street area and my father told me to be sure to call in at Dirty Dicks which he in turn had visited in around 1936 while working in London. I went in and the bar was on the right. There was sawdust on the floor but nothing particularly 'dirty'. I reported back to my father rather disappointed. He suggested next time I went that way to try visiting the basement bar which I did. This was totally different with all sorts of curios including five dead cats (I thought they were monkeys), dust everywhere, the ceiling covered with scribbled notes, usually cigarette packets, coins nailed or glued to the bar and banknotes from all over the world on the ceiling. A really interesting place to see. I am told that the basement bar is still open on certain days and candlelit. However, as you reported most of the curios have gone including thankfully, the poor cats.

Very interesting take on some pubs I know really well. Back in my younger days day, late 1980's, when real ale was at it's lowest ebb the Romford Arms, AKA Pride of Spitalfields sold a very rare thing in those days, a beer from a micro-micro brewery! Crouch Vale, alongside Fullers LP. We would haul ourselves across East London to have a pint of Crouch Vale in this little pub before a curry in nearby Brick Lane. Around the corner was another traditional pub the Alma Arms (long ago closed) ran by Steve the Dane, a bit more edgy he had a side line in specialist entertainments for city gentleman. It was one of those east-end boozers who never rand the last bell but merely pulled across a curtain and began a private party. Drunkenness and trouble was rare just in case there was some dodgy gangster type lurking in the wings, you behaved yourself in there!

Hey Tweedy - I'm enjoying that video. You know my old pub grounds are fleet street/chancery lane/west end/Waterloo - and the only one of these pubs in this video ive been to is Dirty Dicks. The others in the backstreets were a revelation. I have meetings near Liverpool Street next month and will get off the beaten track afterwards to check a couple out. Thanks for all the time and effort on the research. Top man Tweedy.

As an eight-year-old in the very early 60s, I can recall being plonked outside DD's with a glass of lemonade and an Arrowroot biscuit, while my London half of the family 'got on it.' How times change. For the princely sum of 6d, the pub would sell envelopes containing a blue caricature of DD himself, and when placed on one's hand, the shape it attained showed one's emotion at the time. Sounds like one of those dodgy adverts in the then Saturday issue of the Daily Mirror (other media available).

Another jolly good trip down memory lane for me, thanks, Tweedy … lots of historical nuggets, too. ‘Williams Ale and Cider House’ (formerly known as The Ship, I gather) looks familiar. May have played my first game of darts there, early 80s, for our firms’ darts ‘society’ (which consisted mainly of messengers & what were known as ‘below stairs tradesmen’, for a what shall remain nameless Central Bank that celebrated its tercentenary in 1994😉). I digress. The THREE dartboards adds a little credence to my recollection. ‘Dirty Dicks’ … yep. Fallen in & out of there more times than I care to remember. Late opening hours & its proximity to Liverpool St was always a recipe for disaster; it would, usually, both precede AND follow a trip to Brick Lane for a ruby … after a session on the Flowers or Wethereds at the Dandy Roll (no longer there) which used to be situated underneath the Bank of America (no longer there) opposite Registrar’s Dept in New Change, EC4 (no longer there) at the end of Watling St (still there, last I checked).😉✌️

Have you ever been to the Old Kings (sic) Head in Scrutton Street, EC2? Went there last year with my daughter for the first time since 1971 and nothing had really changed. I started work in said road back in '67 and can recall walking in (one bar only) only to be confronted by some lady, with a lion club on a lead! It's a listed building, with the outside covered by those wonderfully green glazed bricks. It was colloquially known as 'The Harry Bones' back in the day but nobody of the current staff had ever heard the pub referred to by that name.

A really fascinating and varied collection of pubs here, Tweedy. I thought, "Jerusalem" just before you said the same about that relief on the top of Dirty Dicks. I don't know why, but I get an irrational level of enjoyment out of seeing things on pubs that reflect a former name! Looking at my notes - yes, I do take them when watching Tweedy Pubs - I have written down "architrave" in relation to The Williams Ale and Cider House. I think I caught sight of some old architrave in there, so possibly a small remnant of its historic fabric surviving there. Everything down from there was modern, as you said. The Pride of Spitalfields was so interesting. What a strange little place in a totally fabulous way. The exterior looked to me as though it had possibly been given one of those "Mediterranean" makeovers, that were in vogue back in the 70s. I could be wrong about that. Enjoy your RU-vid break. We all need them!
@TweedyPubs
@TweedyPubs 2 месяца назад
Thank you Mr WC21! Glad to hear you also came to the conclusion of Jerusalem, although I couldn't quite put my finger on which building(s) that bit of stucco was supposed to depict. Perhaps the Church of the Holy Sepulchre? I cannot pretend to be even remotely knowledgeable about the buildings of Jerusalem, I only know them from occasional glimpses on the telly. Also great you spotted that architrave - that also stood out to me when I was reviewing that footage during editing, and throughout making this video I found myself warming to the Williams. I originally just added it to the list because I usually like to cover five pubs, and I thought it might be nice to include something with a better than average beer selection (I occasionally get comments on these videos along the lines of "interesting pub history but the beer at all of these places looks terrible", and I do sort of see their point!). The segment about the rules at the Williams was a book I only stumbled on while I was doing the editing, and overall it turned out to be a more interesting pub than I first anticipated. Yes the Pride of Spitalfields is a real oddity of a pub building isn't it? Great pub though.

I was in the Ten Bells circa 30 years ago whilst on an evening Ripper walking tour. The place had been converted into a ghastly goth like vibe with purple and red lighting in a poor attempt to make it spooky or whatever as others have mentioned. Walked straight out and found a proper boozer for a hand pulled pint and a ham and cheese toasty. Delighted they came to their senses and have restored it to respectability and good graces. Superb narration on this one Tweedy, very informative as usual. Enjoy your break, we are just heading into a warm summer here at the Jersey shore.

In the 1980s (I lived nearby in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s) the Ten Bells was called The Jack the Ripper. Thankfully good taste eventually prevailed. I believe the White Hart has been run by the same woman, Sandra, for an extraordinary umber of years. The now elderly lady was present on my last visit Gilbert’ & George live one or two streets away. I lived opposite the Pride of Spitalfields and it was rare back in those days for there not to be lock in. The interior hasn’t changed since those days. I hope you got to meet the pub cat.

Another great video Tweedy! I'm fully supportive of the pub carpet! We haven't been to any of these pubs, but we need to get to at least the highlights. Have you checked out Edward Callow's "Old London Taverns" (from 1899)? He has several pages on Dirty Dick's and also mentions the "No man can be served twice" policy. He also refutes the "bride died on the wedding morning" story ("it is utterly unworthy of credence") and seems to attribute the dirtiness to "Richard" Bentley being an eccentric and a joker. Edward Callow seems to have been a visitor to the previous incarnation of Dirty Dick's when it was more a warehouse and he puts the date of the current pub as 1870. His book is probably more memoir than strict history but it's pretty entertaining 😄.
@TweedyPubs
@TweedyPubs 2 месяца назад
Thanks Chris! Very glad to hear of a fellow pub carpet enthusiast. No I haven't read the book you mention, but I will seek it out. I was a bit sceptical about the story around Dirty Dick's but the video was getting a bit long so I ended up dropping the bits where I presented some alternate theories. Bentley is certainly not the only person to have been given that nickname, it was also applied to highwayman Jerry Abershawe and there was a play (perhaps more of a musical?) about him in the 1840s. There's also the character of Miss Havisham in Great Expectations who has a similar tale - most sources suggest Dickens was inspired by the story of the pub, but I wonder if it might have been the other way round. Good to hear Edward Callow also dates the pub to the 1870s, I couldn't find any clear newspaper mentions of it (as Dirty Dick's) prior to that.

Good afternoon, Tweedy. Enjoyed this episode as always. I occasionally find myself up in Liverpool Street Station and Brick Lane area. I have visited Dirty Dicks last year when in that area with my sister visiting a local exhibition. We enjoyed a nice sharing platter in there with sausage rolls, pork pots, scotch eggs, cheese and pickles, etc. Always goes down well with a few ales !!! Next time I am in the area, I will give the Williams Ale and Cider House a visit. I agree that judging on the exterior, if passing, I would probably think it might be a modern pub, but it seems they have an excellent selection of ale there. I noted a pump for "Landlord," - always a good sign 😄👍. The last pub, Pride of Spitalfields looks worth a visit too. I still can't understand why the 10 Bells isn't a Goth Mecca to this day. For, obvious reasons.... However, I remember having my 1st pint there 25 years ago and at that time it was only open in the evenings and just for the tours. The East End was very different then, and this pub was a dive, albeit a glorious one. Still was a tourist trap nonetheless. I was pleased when it came under new management who turned it into a vibrant locals' pub again.

Thanks Alex! Yes each of these videos takes a few days to make, with the research and then the editing - it's not that I don't enjoy it but I need to spend some time with family! Hopefully normal service will be resumed in a couple of weeks.

Good video but surprised you didn’t mention that the Ten bells pub was actually called the Jack the Ripper in the 70s . I used to work opposite there as a teenager. Any reason? Or just debunking history 🤷🏿‍♂️

Knew the pub and did building work in 1983 great guy owned it a electrician who worked in West London was involved in Reading Rock Festival and Marquee club but loved Fullers especially Pride so there's something to think about loved it there .

Thanks Alex, good to know! I actually went to Reading Festival a couple of times, believe it or not. Many years ago now of course! The beer offering on site was always terrible but the Dad of one of my friends worked for Hall and Woodhouse at the time, so he'd give us a massive polypin of Badger to take along. Fun times!

Regarding the Pride of Spitalfields and the Fullers connection -there may be more to it. The John Turner whose name is one of the partners in Fullers, Smith & Turner (and also Henry Smith too actually) came from the Ind & Smith company at the Star Brewery in Romford. Perhaps the John Turner & Sons brewery in Spitalfields has some connection to that same Turner family?
@histmanuk

I thought the same too and it seems to be the case: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuller,_Smith_%26_Turner

@@histmanuk I can't see anything there about the John Turner & Sons brewery in Spitalfields.
@histmanuk
@histmanuk Месяц назад
@@sirperybLakeney Yes, you are correct. Searching elsewhere I see that the Spitalfields brewery continued under the Turner name until 1890 so perhaps there were 2 John Turners (a popular name). I don't have access to the census records so can't check at the moment.
@sirperybLakeney
@sirperybLakeney Месяц назад
@@histmanuk My point was that it may be the same Turner family. Possibly a different branch that later died out and was inherited by the branch that was in the Fuller's partnership. That might explain the story of the switch to Fuller's from Ind Coope.

@RaymondCarson-rf1rg
@RaymondCarson-rf1rg Месяц назад
not sure about that, but if you need to use crypto, I'd recommend getting a card from a non-bank service like Banxe. You can move your crypto to the card and convert it to regular money, making things much easier and faster.
