Today I analyze Bad Bunny's Puerto Rican Spanish! This accent is notorious for being quite difficult to understand, especially because native speakers from Puerto Rico are known to speak very fast. We'll talk about how they change their "R's" to "L's" and the interesting slang they use. Thank you for watching, you're awesome :) New videos every Saturday.

Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

I am Puerto Rican born and raised on the island. Reguetoneros tend to use a lot of street slang in their songs just like African American rappers do in the USA. The only thing that bothers me a tiny bit is that there is a lot of people from many other countries who just generalize. They think that all Puerto Ricans speak the same way, which is wrong.
@Midnight-z-z
@Midnight-z-z Месяц назад
exactly, I am Puerto Rican, but can only speak English bc of my family. I know basic Spanish and when I attempt to talk in Spanish, it sounds like Mexico Spanish or Spanish from some Latin American (kinda) because it's the Spanish I'm used to hearing in Baltimore, MD. (which is where I live now). My friend from Puerto Rico is gonna teach me some Puerto Rican Spanish though.

As Puerto Rican I can attest to how much we are criticized how we change some r into L. We finally learned that it is a trait we got from Spanish immigrants from the province of Extremadura where they still do the same as us. In general his accent is very urban and very different from the country side.

Each Hispanic country have different Spanish accent and inclusive one common word can have multiple meaning in each country. When I moved to Los Angeles from Puerto Rico it was hard in the beginning understand Mexican or centro American Spanish accent but I was able to understanding them after share time with them. You only need to understand the basic Spanish and later will add other meaning that will help you understand multiple Spanish accent. So I strongly suggest that not stop your plan to visit my homeland. You will surprise how much you will understand us

Nate, nice vid in trying to "explain" Puerto Rican Spanish pronunciation, I'm P.R. born and raised, although I left the island over 40 years ago when I enlisted in the Army. Anyway, people from the island depending where you are from, have different accents and ways to say things. Puerto Rico's Spanish and accents have Andalucian roots but mostly influence by Canarian Spanish as we have a lot of words that came from the Canary Islands. Also there were other Europeans who lived in the island during the time the Spanish were there, so more words were added to the local vocabulary. Finally, after the Spanish-American war, the American English influence, we also added which at times you hear people incorporating English words and the same time you are speaking Spanish all in one sentence. Anyway, nice vid.

Hey bud! Thanks for the video! I hope you're having an awesome time with the Chilangos! :D Funny thing is, I've only been learning Spanish for like 2 years and my level is still way, way, way, way lower than you, but I honestly don't have a problem understanding him even at the 100% speed, probably because of the hundreds of hours that I've spent listening to him sing at an even faster, less-comprehensible rate! :)) :)) Also, I thought of a recommendation for your channel, consider start mentioning the approximate level (A1-A2, Medium, etc.) of the video that you're going for in the caption, so for example if I don't need the very basic stuff, I would keep waiting for your next video that's more up my alley, or mentions Reggaetón :)) Have an (alcohol-optional) michelada for me! 🍻

I feel like most of the rest of Americans who learned Spanish in school or own their own have a Mexican sound to their accent and it rings so loud and clear to me because in Miami, we don't have that many Mexicans. lol I feel special to have a Cuban/Puerto Rican accent. It also makes the accents from the Canary Islands and Andalusia in Spain easier to understand.

You gotta understand, Puerto rico is like a microcosm of the USA's regional accents just like mexico and others but Puerto rico has the thing where its a small island divided by mountains, planes, countryside and sometimes highways, the island itself had a ferry to take you from Ponce in the south to San Juan in the north and the dirt mountain roads were filled with every which way from either dangerous stretches of highway men, farms or isolated outposts in the 19th century. Then when America started to come into the fold after the war theres certain accents that vanished like the spanish nobilities accent or the upper crust one that simply became the telemundo city dweller accent. Its really fascinating.

¿Cómo has estado, güey?
@reucat24
@reucat24 Год назад

Bad Bunny is probably not the best example of Puerto Rican Spanish, he speaks the more street Puerto Rican dialect. Also I get it's kinda a meme for every non-native Spanish speakers to gravitate towards Mexican spanish, but boy even they have some unintelligible speakers, almost like they're singing. But I do agree Colombian is normally pretty clear. Also Puerto Rican dialect comes from the Canary Islands and Andalusia and have similarities with Cuba and Dominican Republic. So it's not something that was just made up for no reason. Lot of culture and history and I recommend that you visit the Caribbean islands, they are welcoming and don't let people telling you that Puerto Rican's over use of L's is something that's going to be impossible to understand.

You have done something different from everyone else learning Spanish. You've delved headfirst into a rabbit hole of accents, dialects, vocabularies and slangs that most people wouldn't bother differentiating from. They just think that all Spanish is the same. And have no comprehension, knowledge, or interests in going any further then that. To many, these important details will fly right over there heads without ever giving it a second thought. But now you see the differences and the natural beauty of every kind of ethnic background of the Spanish speaking communities out there. And all they bring. Not many people dive into this kind of stuff. You're probably the only popular one that i know of doing so.

In reality, like in the USA and other countries,different levels of Spanish are spoken by different strata of society, not to mention the jargon of the very young. But, some -a lot-- speak a Spanish variety very much in line either international Spanish. So, if you speak standard Spanish, no problem.

I have to listen hard and replay the same interview a few times before half goes to me understanding most of what he's saying. It's just that the way that he pronounces words and shortens them and flows them together (if that makes sense) is different than what I am used to hearing in my family so I had to adjust my ears. So I think his accent is not an example of how everyone in Puerto Rico speaks.

Soy puertorriqueña y muy orgullosa de nuestro autóctono y bello idioma. Por favor, paren de comparar con otros . No está bien. Como dicen en inglés , It's so annoying ".

You should travel to Guayama Puerto Rico and listen to the people at the south of PR. Woman as well talk like that.

R sounds like L only at the end of syllables

And sometimes the sound is more like an L but a lot of the time its like an incomplete r sound because just one r is like a palatal slap with your tongue so its almost like we dont finish the r sounds which sounds more like an L

Could you do a vid of the Northern New Mexican Spanish dialect? It’s a pretty rare and interesting one that is very old in its origin!

After travelling to several different english speaking countries, I found the exact same issues (local dialects) with the english language. Big freaking deal!

Chapucero - in this context it is PR slang for like saying in English that someone does things half-assed.
