If you fancy getting up close to unique caves and incredible wildlife, I cannot think of a more perfect tour - welcome to our day island hopping with Staffa Tours!
We did this boat trip on Wednesday 31st May 2023 from Oban, Scotland.
Oban - Mull - Staffa - Lunga - Mull - Oban. 12 hours for £99 each.
Music Courtesy of epidemicsound.com

You'll see I was wearing a SPIS badge today - SPIS (or Strangle Places in Scotland) is a fun Facebook page run by Jag Betty and Solo Bro (both of whom have RU-vid channels). They are local to us (Broughty Ferry and Arbroath) and I recommend checking them out if you don't know about them already. They sometimes hide badges on their trips and Alicja and I were lucky enough to track one down in Montrose. It was a fun treasure hunt!
Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

I'm from Oban & lived in Glasgow for 4 years in my mid to late 20's. While I loved my stint there, I eventually got home sick. I think that if you're born by the sea, you miss it. But Glasgow's superb because you don't have to travel for hours to be in the countryside.

@@furryrug5998 OH Agree, I read a few a review a few months back on someone saying how nice Pollockshaws West train station was, I'd happily meet that person so they can show me what I'm missing, same with many other train stations that are massively lacking in any investment, people just don't look properly or take much interest, all busy now glued to a phone screen.
@heeeeeresrossy
@heeeeeresrossy Год назад
@@G4RY1159 well, If I'm totally being honest...not all of my time in Glasgow was happy. The city is handy & pretty central if you wanna get away to Oban for example. We're just 2 hours from Glasgow, which is what I meant to highlight. But yea, the city itself is sh*tty in areas. For example; I used to work for Barratt Homes. I worked in & eventually lived in Kingston Key opposite The House of Sher. Once Barratt were done selling all the flats, they simply left along with their concierge. The place soon filled up with drug dealers & prostitutes & became a real sh*thole. So I moved, but this time to a flat directly next to the Barrowlands. That was even worse! My car got broken into twice & their were even more prostitutes & dodgy buggers kicking about. Fair to say I didn't stay too long. Saying that, I then moved into a house in a decent area of Renfrew (Robertson Avenue) which was 100 times better. I spent most of the years there, so that's why it wasn't all bad.

Absolutely loved this video! We went on a very similar trip in May from Oban to Mull, then on from Fionnphort to Lunga, past Staffa, then to Iona. Unfortunately, there was too much swell for us to be able to disembark on Staffa, so your video shows us exactly what we missed (never mind, a perfect excuse to go on the trip again). You were so lucky to have seen the dolphins! We saw a couple of Minke whales. The highlight was definitely the puffins. They are such endearing little birds and we were happy to hear from the tour guide (it was the same company, so I'm sure they told you the same) that the puffins actually don't mind the tourists, as we scare away their two main predators.

I did it in 2014, from Oban as part of a coach trip package organised by Oban's West Coast Motors. I think it is scotlands best boat trip. We did a similar tour in the 80s called the three Isles tour. It started in oban, then bus along south coast to point opposite iona. Then a boat took us to staffa. At the time they were rebuilding the jetty so we had to be dropped off at the far end so we walked the whole island to get to the cave. It did mean we saw more puffins though. After that the boat took us to iona which is another great island. I think you captured your best island shots with the great weather. Well, didn't you guys get a fancy boat to Staffa! We were put on the back of a fishing boat, in less than ideal conditions (all the seats inside were taken)😅 The skipper told us that it would be 'a wee bit splashy'.... we were totally drenched right down to our unmentionables...ha ha. One of the passengers was absolutely green, and a German guy dressed in a plastic rubbish bag started singing German sea shanties to cheer us all up. Everyone sang along even though we didn't know the words, it was hilarious. It had been raining on Staffa, so we were too scared to walk down to the cave on slippery rocks unfortunately. I did feel a bit better when I saw that fearless Aliceija was also a bit scared (and she's so brave). Thanks for filming the cave and showing us what we missed. We always go to Scotland too late to see the puffins, but one day we'll make it on time. We did Mull, Staffa and Iona on our day trip... it was a great day (apart from wearing the sea).

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I did the Oban-Mull run last summer, but went out to Iona. Missed the Staffa-Lunga trip due to poor weather, so I am delighted to get to do it (virtually) on a sunny day with you two. As always, top notch, and thanks!

Amazing trip. Wow! I, too, loved everything. It would be interesting to know if the octagon rocks are the same as the one in the Giant's Causeway. I must do some research. When we were in Iceland, a lady mentioned that the people do eat the puffins. Another lady asked what they would make with puffins, I mentioned "Muffins". No one laughed harder her. Thanks for a great video! Hugs, Merry Ann

The rock formations on Staffa Island are amazing, otherwordly even. Puffins are so damn cute aren't they?

That was absolutely stunning. I didn't realise that was where Fingal's Cave was. Its totally impressive, with those incredible basalt formations. You can imagine how artists were inspired by the place. Those huge bird colonies are amazing to experience, the closest I've got was a tour of the Farne Islands. The noise, smell and sheer number of birds is bewildering. Another amazing film, Steve.

This brings back both good and bad memories. We had a week on Mull (in 2015) in a beautiful rented house just outside of Tobermory. We also did the same tour - The bad part was my visit to Staffa and climbing up the ladders to the top was the last trip I did before being diagnosed with Arthritis in my knees - now can barely walk, let alone go up ladders :( However, the rest of the memories are brilliant. If you ever go to Tobermory again - check out "Cafe Fish" - some of the best fish/seafood that I have had anywhere in the world ! It's tiny and you can only book for dinner - so if you ever wanted lunch, be there and queue before it opens !

Cheers Duncan and sorry to hear about the arthritis, but glad the memories are happy ones! Thanks for the tip - sounds a wonderful wee place!

Grew up around Oban, It’s so commercialised these days, I remember going to mull as a kid, early 70’s, just me my big brother and my dad on his little boat where I got to wear the captains hat. We just rocked up on the coast where my old man would take us to the pub. He’d get pissed, bundle us back on the boat and sing all the way back to Oban. Very little to no tourists back then, no police, nobody getting in your business. Good times, great memories.

Wow, what a trip! I ought to make a list of all those beauties in Scotland. Think I will. Lunga I fell in love with. Staffa is geologicaly interesting. The strange columns have a simple explanation. Found this on a website: "In liquid lava that cools, shrinkage cracks form from the outside to the inside. Usually they form in thick layers of lava and gradually the cracks form the columns. Broad columns are formed in slow solidification and narrow in rapidly cooling lava. What we see as the basalt columns is what is left after prolonged weathering and erosion."

I cannot imagine a more tranquil experience than setting off across the water as you did. A perfect start to a great day. By the way, I used to keep those caterpillars in my youth. They turn into the most beautiful Garden Tiger Moth. Google to see what they look like - more like a butterfly than a moth.

Looks like you've recovered from your bout of food poisoning. Glad to see you're feeling better. I love ferry rides. I commuted daily from Bremerton to Seattle on the ferry (which you have seen before on your visit) for about 3 years. Always loved that, (despite the fact that I had to leave at 5 a.m..Yuck!). We don't have dolphins, but you do get to see the occasional Killer Whale from the "J" pod in Puget Sound. And LOVE Puffins! They always just look like they're having so much fun. Thanks to you and Alicja for the tour. Amazing as always. Remembering to leave a "LIKE"👍

Pretty easy really. Molten basalt squeezes out and dries quickly and shrinks which creates the hexagonal formations.

Steve another amazing video and blog the islands around Scotland are so beautiful. it's amazing that the calmac ferry was actually running and not broken down. Which this year the islands around Scotland have had very big issues with trying to get to the mainland for hospital appointments etc.
