Oh dang, called out 🤣! Love the breakdown of the mechanical stuff behind what makes them good or awful, this is solid stuff, I'd love to hear more! Never would have considered the Ogre chunk size thing, actually forgot they were technically large. They are good at one thing. They did establish democracy that one time. Hopefully you'll consider doing more OB64 stuff, hearing some preferred low to mid tier loadouts really help some newer folks.
You're a good man coffee potato. I don't make many videos, and the ones I do aren't produced well. But I'll give it a shot at some point. Thank you. I appreciate it.
@@MrPugdy You're good at explaining stuff, and there's a sore lack of good OB64 stuff given how much of a thing it can be to set up. Give it a go if you're able, there's a lot of folks looking for it right now.
It's my favorite 64 game. I wish there was a difficulty mod for it. The gameplay and roleplaying are pretty top notch for me. Unfortunately, the challenge is so low that the strategy aspect isn't as fun after the first 10 or so levels. Give it a shot though. Emulators and roms are our best friends :)
Very cool! No way archmage better than Lich. Lich gets extra attack and immunity to all status effects. Dragoon is S with the heavier armor- basically a heavy armor sword master. Doll of curse is really good too on enchanters.
Pretty much what I expected. Glad to see my instincts weren't wrong eons ago when I first played the game as a child. I still use the less powerful classes just for variety, RP, and fun, but it's sometimes hard going for something so suboptimal when compared to a paladin frontline backed with magic. I always found it odd that they hard limited the number of black knights you could have, but not the other absurdly powerful classes.
Me too actually. I usually play from a roleplay standpoint now. It's hard to play for challenge. I will hack in people like Carth or Biske at the start, and predetermine when they would 'join' my army. I might add the original Sky Knights, 'Dragoons' from MOTBQ, who would join when you fight ogres for the first time. I love the roleplay of the game. I agree with you about the Black knights. As the game goes on, they outclass every unit as far as stats, but their limited attack number helps keep them in check. If they had three attacks, I'd understand limiting them.
You could still get more black knights than people care to use. It's just a big PITA to get so many. (neutral gorgons drop Love&Peace sometimes and Black Knights are a very common enemy in the late game)
My favorite game hands down! Just started a new playthrough of it this weekend. Going for Biske La Varet. Looking forward to Unicorn Overlord in March! We'll see how it compares to this classic!
This is a well thought out list! I was surprised to see golems so high up on the list. I need to try using them in my next playthrough. Also holy cow the temperature is insane where you live! Hope you are staying cool, my friend :)
OB64 was a fun game but, like you pointed out, it wasn't particularly well balanced or challenging. There are currently two mods out for it, ShaneZell and Hammer to Fall. I've heard they make the game harder but have not gotten around to trying them myself.
I would agree with that. Against most units I'd have to agree. I think the reason I put them a little lower is because I was putting them right next to the golem. I realized if I had Gilbert and 2 hellhounds vs Paul with 2 golems, regular or stone, I suspect Paul would win handily. The golems get three attacks regardless of class, higher defense. Golems are rare though, and the hellhounds are generally very useful early on.
This was awesome, Ive been looking for something like this on and off for years actually -- Im planning a pumpkinhead/hydra/cleric/black knight group this play through
@@MrPugdy It is fun, The one thing that’s counterintuitive if you want to check it out yourself is I find most success with the hydra being in the back line on a side entirely by itself. That means pumpkin head and hydra in the back with a cleric taking just one turn in the middle behind the black knight
I'd like to do that at some point. I was looking for a list of them in the tier list website, but couldn't find it. I'm very unfamiliar with the site still, and how it all works. Hopefully someday I'll figure it out.
Dunno why Ninja master is below vulcans, ravens, and some of the others. Once you use them long enough they will almost always use combination magic each time. Seen them many times just shut down an entire 5 man formation.
I haven't used them very much. I probably should have ranked them higher. I viewed them like the male valkyrie. Stronger and faster, but less physical and magic dmg than their counterparts.
51:00 yah I was gonna say, there is zero need for such raw power because without her 3 Paladins and a Lich (especially with a Draconite book) will one shot kill any unit in the endgame. What a Princess can do though that might be practical is make any of the below units useful, giving a Beast Master and a Cerberus 7 attacks over 5 would actually make them good, or adding an attack to a team of Freyas or Seraphs. 4 attacks on most anything that comes with 3 though isn't needed because most anything that hits with 3 Attacks is killing it's target before the battle ends.
Good review, disagree on vampire,he can be really resilient in long fights and is a great leader for 2 Bigs. Other than that 1 I think I mainly agree with your list. I passed my childhood and early adulthood with this game. Very easy, but so addictive. I enjoyed your video well.
I must have been doing things completely wrong when I played this game because even with the item dupe cheat, I thought this game was really hard. Maybe I just didn't get far enough into it to start steamrolling through the game like you did? Could you elaborate on how/why you thought this game had no difficulty?
Hi there. I'll try. Fundamentally, if you focus on building up an army of knights, with healers and diana's in the back, you can handle pretty much anything. The key is to get a lot of fighters early, keeping them a level or two below the enemy, and raising their alignment. Paladins and diana's can pretty much handle everything. I think it helps having a background in army building games. I played the original ogre battle a lot, which gave me experience which helped a lot as well.
You basically win if you max the numbers. The game basically auto-calculates the strength of your squads for you. Say you have a Paladin that has a 30 damage rating in the front and hits 3x. That means he's worth 30x3 points in the front. Put 3 of those in the front and you're looking at an easy 270 points in the front row alone. Also elemental damage is strictly superior to physical damage. Blessed swords are ridiculously good value. The other important thing was targeting leader with your tactics. 90% of the time this means the enemy will run from you once their leader is dead so they'll be constantly exhausted and have low stats from exhaustion when you fight them.
I would also throw in how few enemy units there are on any given map. I don't think the largest enemy unit count in 64 even surpasses the smallest enemy unit count in SNES. Even if you've got poor unit formation yourself, on most maps you can practically assign one of your units to each of the enemy ones and just win through overbearing numbers. Also the enemy formations. I will never get over the enemy formations. I think if the unit makeup and positioning was fully RNG, it would have tended to make more reasonable formations. Even at the end of the game, the units are not fully filled and you still see fighters in units and single large beast units and 4 small character units.
I just got done playing through tactics ogre reborn and remembered this game….man I wish Nintendo wouldn’t have shut down their virtual console cause I really want to play this again one if the best games ever! I remember making so many battalions that I never used man it was fun 😂
I definitely think there is a case for them being in S Tier, along with the Quetzacuotl. I suspect if I did the list again, I would consider putting them in S tier. I think it's more an issue with game mechanics. In the back row they are excellent, but you can usually kill the enemy leaders then chase them down. If the enemy units design was better it would help.
Valkyries are actually better than archers especially when they combine their attacks and destroy multiple enemies. Wizard are better because you can use different elements easier than valkyries.
No it was no challenge. He probably had a harder time than me since he advocates golems so much. Golems were bad in SNES MOTBQ and they're still bad in POLC. Way too slow and too prone to miss. Literally obsolete once elemental damage is introduced.
Bruh you put helm of the fearless, orge armor and orge blade on the dragoon and he will freaking EAT EVERYTHING! Average 105 on armored units at level 33 and 267 on Crits can one shot most unites with Crits in the same level sure the stat progression is not then best but his gear options are the best in game
I'd agree with that. I think the gear is best for sure. I think it depends on timeline. Going to 100, a sword master is better, then change him to dragoon. 30 to 40 str boost from items is good. But they are static. A sword master or black knight will be better Stat wise for leveling. That was all I was saying.
Bro is sighing like every "bad" unit is an offense to his whole bloodline. Why so depressed dawg? It's just a game. Play the Hammer to Fall mod if you want much needed rebalance/difficulty adjustments.
