This dance drama (নৃত্যনাট্য) is based on Tagore’s poem “Pujarini”, from his collection “Kotha o Kahini”.
The timeline goes back to 4th century BC. King Bimbisar, descendent of King Ashoka, had propagated Buddhism to its peak. When his son Ajatshatru overtook the throne, he imprisoned Bimbisar and ultimately killed him. The usurper Ajatshatru decided to revive the Vedic form of worship overtaking the widespread Buddhism. He didn’t hesitate to use his power to wipe off Buddhism from the face of his empire.
This is the story of Srimati, a female worshipper of Lord Buddha, who gets killed for denying King’s orders. This story is an act of protest against Brahminical patriarchy. It’s a tale of bravery of an ordinary woman against Ajatshatru’s violence and persecution. It’s an epitome of love and peace against resentment and hatred…
