concerning the work needed to pull the pulk....a little experiment...using a pair of old skis, bolt them to the bottom of the pulk to reduce surface area and thereby reduce friction. just a thought. great video and best wishes.

Most of my winter travel is across frozen lakes so pulk is my go-to. I also usually snow shoe rather than ski. I try to avoid rugged portages, etc. in the winter and would agree that a backpack would be more suitable for them. A pulk is much easier on my old shoulders and back though. Great video as always. atb Larry

I’ve used my pulk at 9.000 ft it’s tough in steep mountains.but it’s the best way to pack out a elk or red deer.So in thick area’s I leave pulk at entrance and back pack out meat to pulk then pull pulk to vehicle

It is personal choice. My ski tours in Norway involved sack weights of about 20kg or so. It was ok, but didn’t help the skiing, particularly downhill. Also , getting up after a fall was much more difficult. After a really bad trip with high winds blowing me over, and difficulty getting up in such bad conditions, and my age ! (70), decided to try a small home made pulk. The difference not carrying weight on my back was great. The routes I’ve now done in N Sweden are a bit flatter so that was good. But I was surprised how much the drag was on hills and in deep snow. Also traverses could be tricky if the pulk rolled. Going downhill was generally ok if you could just let skis run , and the pulk followed. But I also found that a knotted rope loop under the front of the pulk gave a really good braking effect to avoid the pulk trying to overtake. With the extra food and gear I can pack, I shall continue with a pulk. But mine is quite small, being a converted standard Childs toboggan , with rope in crossed plumbing pvc pipes clipped to my sack. But it takes about 25kg , with other lightweight stuff in my sack. This very cheap pulk has now done three week-long trips and works well!

A pulk REALLY comes into its own when you are two-up. The lead skier can break track, making life for the pulk puller much easier. It is also surprisingly much easier to ski downhill with a pulk. Going uphill there are two alternatives when two-up: the lead skier attaches two lines to the belt of the pulk puller and adds his/her strength , but this needs very good coordination; the pulk goes first, followed by skier number two who can push the back of the pulk with a ski-stick when it sticks. My view is that the benefits of the pulk in providing really comfortable accomodation and excellent warm food far outweigh the effort in pulling it. I agree that if you are alone, then the decision is not so clear. I spent many winters in N Norway in the 60’s and 70’s, and our gear was not a advanced as today’s. The pulks were large and heavy but I am still a great fan of them.

No question about which one for me. No snow in Florida so it's a Backpack and Ultralight is the best. The closest I get to snow camping is watching these videos and enjoying every minute of them. The only exertion on the trip , for myself , is lifting the coffee cup off the desk. At times even turning the thermostat down a few degrees so it feels more natural to me.

Hello Erik, for me a backpack is optimal for my geography. I am on the east coast of N.J. USA. It is not a good idea to walk on ice. Your temps are much colder than our temps. So far we have had many fall in this year! Dogs too! We also have a few go out in heavy snow, and are not seen again! Has you know, it is about being prepared. Better with 2 than alone for newbies! Looking forward to your next video, and take care! Peace!

Really good points Eric. There have been a number of studies on optimal weight carriage (this was designed around the military) as approximately 30% of your body weight. With training and good equipment you can carry significant loads but, you must take care not to become unstable. A damaged back, knee or ankle is not what we want!

somebody should create a small Pulk that is the size of a large backpack so it attaches to your backpack like an outer shell that way you have the best of both worlds you can wear it on your back but then when the ground goes nice and flat you can take it off and easily drag it behind to give your shoulders a break

Good morning!! I had a similar experience with a sled. I'm in No. Colorado, and camp and hike in the mountains here and in Wyoming. I had seen so much about winter hiking/camping with a sled, I tried it a couple years back right after a snowstorm. Obviously, I gave little fore-thought (if any) into pulling a sled, in the mountains, in snow! I made it work. After I got back home, I threw the sled into a corner of my barn, where it still sets!! I think it would be fun in flat terrain, but there's not much of that around here. 😊 Be safe. Roger

@ssmith954

Really interesting, thanks! Love the images and the sounds! One question -- what is the kind of maximum weight you feel comfortable pulling? I was inspired by your channel to plan a 2-person winter trip to Sarek/Padjelanta for 21 days, and with food/fuel/equipment that's a starting weight of 62kgs (Pulk+baggage on the pulk). Does that sound normal? Of course the weight would be decreasing by 1.7kgs a day as food and fuel is used, the idea would be to cover about 10kms a day, so not huge distances. I ask because as you said backpacks are just not an option for long winter trips. I find a backpack weight above 18kgs starts to be not much fun! Any advice would be most useful! I've never used a pulk before so it's hard to imagine how much it can pull!
@jsvensson8234
@jsvensson8234 3 года назад
It can pull a lot. I can pull an adult sitting in it, or two kids, no problem. I'm 40, 63kg, and not very fit at all. Just an average gal. I am Swedish though and used to pulks since childhood so no mental barriers to weigh me down 😉 62kg should be just fine. It's not really about the capacity of the pulk as it can be loaded with way more, its about your capacity to pull. The friction is so low on the snow a 62 kg load isn't really a big deal. Put a bit more, maybe 75 kg, in a trolley with good wheels on it (or in a box on top of a skate board 😀)and pull that around on a smooth surface (trying an incline & a decline to of course) and you should get a good idea of what it will feel like weight wise. You will of course go slower in snow, because of your own traction, but it should at least give you a decent idea of what you'll be dealing with. If I was doing a 2-person trip I would use two pulks, one each. Pulling 62kg is totally possible but it will kill the joy of skiing/hiking unless you are looking to bulk up as a result of your trip 💪💪💪You will also make way much faster dividing the load btw you. If you choose to put everything in one pulk, expect to stop for a rest hourly, at least during the first couple of days. Good luck 💙💛💙
