In this video I show you two methods of how to replace the pull cord on your Lawn Boy lawnmower. The first method is to give you a better idea of how the recoil is setup and to give you better access to the recoil.

Thank you for making this video, it revived the best push mower I have ever owned. The spring on my mower came loose and messed up the pull cord and I did not know how it was suppose to be installed until I saw this video. I bought a new spring, followed this video and the old mower started on the third pull. I like these old mowers that you don't have two handles to mess with and you don't have to restart the mower when you have to stop and move something out of the way. THANK YOU!

DonyBoy without a doubt has the best repair videos i have seen for small engines. Always my go to. Currently resurrecting 3 Lawn Boys this weekend. Been using them since early 70's when i was making beer money as a teen. Now 60 and still going strong with them.

I sincerely appreciate how professionally this instructional video was produced. Excellent video of all important aspects of the removal and instillation of the recoil unit. Excellent observations on the key steps involved with the job, and insight on how to actually do the job. Amazing resource for people wanting to work on their own machine.

Great video, just what I needed to change the starter cord. Instead of a 7/16 nut I had an allen screw to loosen the starter assembly. Once loosened everything went smoothly.

This was extremely helpful. However, Some people may have a model that has a hex key set screw instead of the 7/16" bolt to hold in the pull cord assembly that was on this model. I believe the correct size for the hex key is 5/32" (I got 4 mm to work). The model I was working on was an 8237 AE.
@maynardcat
@maynardcat 7 лет назад
Thanks for this comment I ran into the same problem, I tried a couple of allen wrenches but they would not work, I'll now buy a 5/32" The Allen wrench set I have goes from a 1/4 to a 7/32" no 5/32", ones' too small the other too large.

If you are restoring an old Lawn Boy or if it has been rained on or otherwise subjected to moisture, the return spring and the inside of it's housing may be rusted. Lawn Boy says that, after removing the 3 screws, hold the spring housing assembly together. (Hold it together tightly, being aware that the loaded spring is inside. Wear safety goggles.), then drop it on the floor (or ground if you have a concrete floor to prevent damage). This will cause the spring to sprongle safely out of the housing. You can then clean any and all rust from the spring and interior of the housing. Lawn Boy says to apply a light coat of grease to the spring. Put the inner end of the spring in the anchoring channel and put the assembly back together, making sure to have the spring in the slot in the outer edge. Then hold the assembly and wind the worm gear till the spring is fully retracted into the housing and hooked in the slot. Then let spring tension relax. Lawn Boy says not to lube the pinion gear; to leave it dry, but I plan to use dry (teflon) lube on it and the worm gear when I do mine.) Btw, this is a good time to replace the pinion gear if it is worn. And, yes, I said "sprongle" (heh-heh).

Great information, but a word of warning to whoever tries to replace one of these pull cords..... Do not remove the very front plate or slide the textured shaft that the gears ride on forward . The actual recoil spring will then pop out and it could hurt you, and drive you insane trying to rewind it.

Crazy I found one of this at my job I work at scrap yard paid 10 bucks for one like that one and another one with self-pelled and a bag a little bit newer from the early 90s broke ropes definitely definitely using this way. Seeing them just sitting there beautiful machine and very unique design my coworkers were about to crush them I said hell no I would buy them it's good for my lawn care business and also they're very light is what I need my Troy built push mowers are a lot heavier than these lol

Lithium grease works well, here from wikipedia : A grease (lubricant) is a mixture of oil and a soap. The soaps are dispersed into and viscosify oils to form stable gels. Lithium grease adheres well to metal, is non-corrosive, may be used under heavy loads, and exhibits good temperature tolerance. It has a drip temperature of 190° to 220°C (350° to 400°F) and it resists moisture, so it is commonly used as lubricant in household products, as well as in automotive applications,

Wonderful video. Thanks Donyboy! I still use my LBoy 7035 (2 cycle oil/gas mix) purchased Oct 1986. Oil leaking from bottom…if anyone knows fix, it would be appreciated. I’m not sure if it’s coming from the muffler or maybe from crankshaft.

Good video as usual. Hey Dony your video and audio quality are excellent compared to some of the train wrecks people post up on youtube. One thing is maybe check out wireless mics the kind you clip on to your shirt. These really bring the audio quality to the next level for the amount of narrating you do in your videos. Your videos are top notch all the same.

There was usually a little rope guide on those starter spring cups to keep the rope in place...It was just tack welded on and has probably fell off...
@frankhoward7645
@frankhoward7645 8 лет назад
I picked up an old Lawn-Boy and found that the pinion gear for the starter mechanism was broken so I ordered a new one. Rather than two clips, my machine has what looks like a giant safety pin for diapers. It fits around the new pinion gear where there is a groove for it and I made sure it was on either side of a large aluminum piece that sticks out from the entine in order to prevent it from spinning around. My question is, what does this thing do? I realize that it follows the pinion in and out as you pull the rope, but I don't understand what it's there for. Also (and this may be related) the pinion fails to engage the flywheel teeth 4 out of 5 pulls. It moves toward it but stops as soon as it hits it and before the teeth engage.

What's the recoil doing when it doesn't engage quite right? In other words you pull the rope half way out and it finally catches or it will slip and come all the way out when you pull and nothing happens as far as the engine turning over. It recoils ok but only catches and turns the engine over about half the time when pulling out. Is it the gear not going in and out like it should? I'm afraid I'm going to break the rope sometime but luckily it's long enough and hasn't happened yet.

Don, I have an older Model Lawn boy, but the spring gear comes out the same way, only mine has a panel but I think the Gear is worn out..Every time I pull the string it retracts, but doesn't turn the crank because the gears slip.. also about a 10 inch wire fell out as I was loosing the bottom screw. I have no idea how to replace that wire.. don't know how it goes back in.. Flustered because it was running so well before, now it won't crank. :(

The Lawnboy spring is probably the easiest to replace. You just wind it in and then bend the tang over at the end so that the spring end is not pulled into the recoil housing. I will send the link to the Online Lawnboy Manuals directly to DB so he can post it. The system wont allow me to post the link into my reply.
