The biggest benefit of lat pulldowns for me is that when I do pull ups I get winded really quickly. I often feel dizzy or even sick when I pile pull ups on top of deadlifts or squats in the same workout but lat pulldowns help you get stronger lats without fatiguing your body as much. Definitely useful for beginners like me who have trouble finishing a 45 minute workout.

Probably both until you have enough strength to do weighted pull ups. 4 months ago I was 25lbs heavier and couldn’t do a single pull up, so I focused on lat pull downs and rows until I’d built the strength to do pull-ups. Now I’m able to do 3 sets of 5 pull ups. Once I’m able to do 10, I’ll start adding weight.

@@MikaelLewisify I recently quit my old job, on the last of Jan. It's crazy how some people can develop V-shape back with bodyweight pull ups. I had to do heavy weighted pull ups and chin ups (over 50 pounds) to get a descent v shaped back. I didn't have much back definition back when I could barely do 5 pull ups

Gold's Gym usually has a spot pad you can pull out under a pull up bar, and you can add or drop weight to the spot pad that you rest your knees on. I started out with that back in 2011 when I was getting back into working out after 6 or 7 years of complacency of no work outs. It really takes a lot of focus on strengthening the tendons and ligaments that hold everything together with light workouts and eating healthy and building oxygen levels in the blood for the muscles. Cardio is important, especially for people that are over weight and haven't worked out in years. Anyway, thanks for the videos. Body weight workouts are probably some of the most healthy workouts for your body!

Doing a resistance workout on the pull up is also a great way to build up to pull ups as well as dips. I saw a video you made demonstrating a pull up utilizing only the resistance going down for several reps for a few sets to build up to either a pull up and even a dip. I've actually used this technique for dips a few years ago because I had let myself gain weight and had stopped working out for a little over a year. I really enjoy your videos! lots of great knowledge imparted to understand why form is important, which I have always strived for, and I grew up in an era where gym at school was mandatory and calisthenics was routinely done every day, along with a short jog. Thanks for posting the videos!🙂

I completely ditched lat pulldowns when I started calisthenics a few years ago. Zero regrets. My best back development gains have come from pull ups, rows and deadlifts. For me personally, I would only throw in lat pull downs at the end of a workout to induce great metabolic stress in the back muscles, but again, I can still get a similar effect performing high reps on inverted/Australian rows (reaching failure). Pull ups are a superior exercise, although this video does a great job at showing when lat pull downs could be a valuable tool. Keep up the awesome content, Daniel.

Julian Rosero : well, you also have to do progressively less assistance as well as static holds at the top and very slow eccentrics. In addition “head banger” pull-ups, scapular pulls and multi hand position Australian rows. Be careful when using the machine, go very slowly keeping good form. I still use it, after I do unassisted I finish off with the machine.

@altuber99_athlete
@altuber99_athlete 7 лет назад
Dips are very good. You can replace BP w/ them and vice versa; however, weighted dips are way more dangerous. Weighted pushups require a lot of core strength-endurance.
@VahnCruz
@VahnCruz 7 лет назад
As long as your shoulders can handle it dips are often a better chest exercise than flat bench. It comes down to injuries and biomechanics. The horizontal load of a bench is rough on my shoulders but a dip is fine.

Putra Dwibarru straight bar dips are the BEST for pectoralis-major (due to the orientation of the pec-fibres) Bench and pushups are better for balanced tricep/pec strength, and dips (parallel bars) is more shoulder-intensive Added weight with any of these excersises isn't a bad idea ifyou can do more than 20 solid reps at a given weight

I'm 72 yo, and to keep up my 6-10 range on pull ups. I've had to use bands. Daniel says don't use them. OK, I understand. But if that takes my rep range down to 4-5 to failure, is that too low for hypertrophy? The comparison of the two exercises (pull up and Lat pull down) is the best on You Tube. Using lat pulldowns as a drop set feature makes a lot of sense.

After any bar work training, I end with a few sets of one arm lat pull down on an outdoor gym equipment which is moved by a long straight bar for two hands, interspersed with sets of one arm overhead press. This gives extra training time with a lower possibility of injury due to tiring of stabilizer muscles. It also helps with fixing asymmetries which occur in non-asymmetric training on the bar.

I’m doing both now after learning the hard way that lay pull down strength doesn’t equal pull up ability. I weigh 225lbs , and Lat Pulldown my weight 10 times, but can’t do one pull up. It took me a 6 months 5 months after surgery to get to doing that Lat pull down at that level. I was so disappointed when my pull up strength was no affected. Now I’m putting the same determination to building up pull-up strength, and to then do a muscle up. I don’t care if it takes me a year!

All my brother does is lift weights, he hates calisthenics. One day, when i was doing pull ups, he came by and i asked how many he could do. He got on the bar and started cranking out pull ups w good form like it was nothing. I asked if he’s been working on his pull ups and he said no, that they feel just like a lat pull down to him. Simple, lat pull ups work people.

Pull up because since I can rep 15 clean I add weight and it feels very good doing. Also when doing good pull training I can judge the quality by doing a simple max pullup set.

I do weight training on a regular basis, I want to improve my strength, I'm not a bodybuilder. One of my main back exercises are pull ups, I always do four sets to failure (six to eight reps) and complete the sets with four cheated reps. Recently I did pull downs, which I hadn't done in years. I chose a weight allowing me to do four to six reps. It felt really good! From now on I will use both exercises alternately to improve both my absolute strength and my relative strength.

I love this channel, because it is so instructive, I have used many of your advises, thanks a lot. I have a question: How to break plateaus. I used to use the lat pull down until I hit a plateau, so I went to do pull ups (first with negatives, then with chin ups and then with pull ups) But again, I have recently hit a plateau with my pull ups. What would you do to break it? I want to do more pull ups, I have lost interest in the lat pulldown.

Thanks Androux. One manageable way to break through a plateau is to increase training frequency. Add an extra session per week and see how you respond!
