Just got state reffed in the STI... If you are not familiar with a 'state ref' it pretty much is a violation you can get in the state of CA if you get pulled over with engine modifications that do not comply with the state emissions. In the process, you have to remove your mods and put it back to stock and get it inspected to be clear to drive again. A whole hassle and is pretty much a CA car guys worst nightmare. It is what it is though! Gotta stay positive and acknowledge it is part of the 'game'.

I got state refed in January this year, luckily only had catless headers and a tune. I put the car back to stock and daily'd it until just last week when I passed smog and paid $25 for the citation after it being certified. Never got anything in the mail however about my citation. @@malcolmbrown9733 they smog check you, so anything that will affect your smog will cause you to fail the state ref test too. Including tunes, intakes if they aren't carb legal.

this is my second Subaru, my first subaru was header back straight piped. Ive been pulled over 4 time and received stare refs every single time, once the ticket is paid and done you're all good, the car just needs to be tested and signed off. If you fail to have that paper signed off they might ask you to show it at you next traffic stop, I got out of my 5th state ref because I showed my previous state ref results for my semi stock exhaust and I got let off. Cali cops are no joke but at the end of the day they have a Job to do as well. I respect them for what they do, but sucks they do this to car enthusiasts.

I’ve been state reff too before in sd. I put everything back to stock and bring to state referee but still didn’t pass so what i did is just pay off my ticket for modified emissions and put all the parts everything back together again. I feel like I waste my time putting everything back to stock and they still didn’t pass me on inspection. So when you pay it off you good. Also I recommend check it on the website your record it will take 2 weeks or 1 week to show up that state reff and just paid it off in there instead waiting the mail it will take forever.

I believe you have two options technically. You can either pay the fine and move on, or go back to stock take it to the ref and get it signed off without having to pay. When I got state reffed I just paid the fine and moved on… not sure if it’s changed since then cuz that was like 2019 lol but that was just my experience

I got state reffed like 5 years..still drove the car around😂 had cops around me and everything and I don’t think it actually flagged my registration or anything. All I did was go to court to pay the fine and was on my way. Was still able to get my tags for my car the following year without a problem

I got state ref for stock intake with a K&N air filter, You can pay the fine but if you get pulled over again in the same car, the system will pop up as your got state ref in that car before and they’ll pop your hood once again to make sure it stock and but if they see that you still have the intake then they can tow your car or get arrested, or maybe both depending on cop mood.

Tbh, the best solution is to move out of CA if you really want to mod your cars. I myself have been considering it the past couple years and not just because of the ridiculous cars/registration laws and regulations, but also the fact that the state wants to leech as much money from you as possible. I don't really think it's worth it staying in CA as a car guy.

In my experience bro, when I got state reffed for my exhaust , I don’t remember getting anything in the mail. I just remember having to get smogged before the date on the citation but you can call and extend it I believe, I tried to get the paper signed off at the courthouse but they said it has to be smogged first even though I put it to stock. After I passed smog, I went back and paid it off and they said I was good to go. Honestly I would drive that car regularly since it was my daily and I never had any issues with cops seeing me while being reffed, maybe cause they know I already got fucked 😂I had tinted windows on everything but the windshield , no front plate and my exhaust . They got my brother for the same a while later and it was the same process .👍🏼

the worst part of what you said is, most modified cars are kept and maintained better than most unmodified cars on the road. I've seen countless cars that have body panels rusting through and look like if they hit a bump too hard the whole thing will fall apart, but even still they have to target modified cars cause they're easy tickets (thats what I assume, they see an easy hit so they take it)

Vinyl on the plates isn’t the best idea, about as illegal if not more so than the windshield tint and they’ll pull you over more frequently for it. I believe it’s a minimum $300 fine for just that. Don’t want to see the sti impounded. Probably not what you wanna hear but it might be time to change city’s/states sounds like you’re getting more well known with the cops too and that’s going to get ugly. Hope things get better. I live in the bay area. got state reffed for my tomei on my 350z and I was able to pay it off, it was about $550. a lot better than putting my stock one in to get inspected for compliance then swapping it AGAIN to the tomei

I don’t live in cali, but from what I’ve always heard is that you convert back to stock, go to a mechanic (smog/emissions place) and then they inspect and sign it off saying you’re good and you send that somewhere, but idk for sure ahah. I’d find someone you can pay-off 😅🤫

Dude, you don't answer questions and you don't consent to searches Also, I think AOSs are legal. There's a list from the state somewhere that lists modifications that are ok to use. I believe AOSs are on it. COBB's AOS also has a CARB number. That's the one I plan on getting to cover myself just in case.

Found this good video talking about state refs, seems like you can just post bail and not have to do the state ref inspection, the inspection seems to act as a "fix it ticket" where you don't have to pay the fine. Glad I live in PA, we don't have front plates, my car is dropped, tinted and very loud and not stock. Tint will tend to get you hassled here depending on where you live, some areas are known to be much tougher than others. I've rolled by local cops, got on it a bit and the cop laughed and shook her head and kept it pushing. California is not how it used to be, both my parents had fast modified cars when we lived in both SoCal and NorCal, didn't get hassled for it back then but that was late 70's and early 80's, different times. California is a hassle in every way, driving a modified car here in PA is so much less stress. Sorry man, I hope things work out for the best for you. Maybe time to move to a different city where the cops don't know you.

You can pay the full fine and go on with it. Technically speaking the only reason they make you go back to stock is for emissions here in Cali. Like yeah when you go to court you have a possibility of the amount being reduced cuz you “fixed” the issue but other than that they just want the money.

State ref sends the cert along with you vin and plate to the dmv and court. even if you don't do anything with on your part with the cert. the dmv and state gets notified if you did it or not. or you can "sell" your car to a buddy or gf and the ref ticket goes away and then "buy" it back. lol
