man watching you figure this out has been a thing of beauty. so satisfying watching those half stators getting copper neatly pulled. you can sort them by OD so you have the minimum amount of up and down time with the clamping cylinder

you could even put a small (1/2"-3/4") wide flat on the bottom, it doesnt need to be totally pointed to get through the stators.

I was always good with machines, show me and it will be humming before lunch 😂. Worked a lot of different jobs in my youth. I loved the variety. I remember one job boss came around and said that’s not the way you do it. The job was getting done my way in the same amount of time as the old. What works for one is not necessarily the way it works for someone else. A left handed person does things differently than a right handed person, right? ✌️

Couple of suggestions. Shape of blade should be like semicircle, not wedge. Bevel must be polished. And you should fix stators tight at the basement to avoid shifting.

I’m not understanding why cutting thru the plates is an issue. It’s not pressing thru them because they are thin and easily cut

Cutting the laminations is not a problem ,as long as you can still remove the copper, which is the objective. The steel is just a bonus for gas money.

Nice work man! No dust, no wear and tear on the grinder. The more you use this the more you're getting dialed in. Then the puller has no problem getting the copper out. That's what I'm talking about!

Nice setup! Have you thought maybe some big all thread tapped to welded bolts in a jig frame on you base to level? You may need a to level as u go given the force you are getting out of the cylinder. I learned in farming when I was young., Powerful hydraulic cylinders do have the ability to completely warp the cylinder arm. Happened more than once on the front loader on a tractor. The whole cylinder warped.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I move the press to the other table I will figure how to make sure the fixed carriage is level and probably like you suggested have jack screws to level it.

that blade can take it, if anything just put a radius on the tip to make it stronger and roll with it. that steel they use for stators is soft as butter.

I think the angle and point of the blade are the main issue. It's because the point of the blade goes into the bottom of the center opening before the side of the blade spreads it apart. The point is starting in a different row of plates on the bottom half forcing it to cut through them. If the point was shorter the sides of the blade would split it enough for the point to go in the same gap it started. So less angle on the blade or a semi-circle blade shape would fix ya right up 😊 Eta: if this doesn't make any sense just look in the opening of the stator and watch the tip of the blade while cutting...

A note for the editor. When you go x2-3 speed the audio does not and becomes disjointed from what we are seeing. It might be better to hold with your music tradition from your timelapse camera or to just mute during that speed up period.

At 35:30 as you push down the whole press rocks to the right side. This probably also rocks when you have the blade in it. That’s why it wasn’t cutting straight down. The more force you put, the more it rocks to the right.

assuming the blade is a uniform thickness past the beveled edge, you could make a fixed blade guide that will stabilize it and reduce the lever arm on the blade when cutting. im glad you are thinking about that because as you currently have it, you could have quite the bending moment on the blade if you arent careful. id find two pieces of channel steel, attach uhmw to the flat faces, then figure out a way to fasten them securely to the press frame so that they guide the blade. you have a nice mill now though, so you should be able to fabricate something nice!

I don't know if it's the straightness of the cut, or the act of separating the laminations. it looks like when the laminations split, the blade's thickness isn't perfectly centered due to differences in the glue strength holding them together, so it walks a bit sideways on some and not others.

Ur soo close dude..a sharp blade for sure..about 3/4 of an inch above the blade needs to be wider..let the hydrolics spread the housing and the blade will easily cut the Cooper..did u ever cut a tire and if u spread it open when cutting its easier to cut? Same concept..let the fat part of the blade do the work and save the blade for the gold..too easy..😊
