See what happens in part 2:
• Pt 2 Solo Logging on M...
Part 3:
• Pt. 3 Solo Logging Loa...
Using a Farmi winch to attempt to pull a large incense cedar log out of a steep canyon. The winch is on a Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34 tractor.
This tree went down last winter in a snowstorm. I have been debating whether I want to wrestle it out of the canyon because I knew there was a good chance it could be rotten.
I set up the rigging to where the pull is equivalent to three tractors. See if the tractor can pull this log out or not.
If so, the incense cedar logs will be cut into lumber on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill.

Man I'm jealous of that winch and those blocks. Please do more in-depth videos of the blocking and tackling and procurement of that type of equipment. I've been obsessed with it for several years but don't have the know-how.

This was a year ago! I can’t believe I haven’t seen it. I guess I haven’t been subscribed as long as I thought. Any way, I appreciate the different rigging techniques as a retired Laborer (40 years), I’m still using some of the tricks I learned from necessity back then. I’m an old man now, so need them more than ever. Good video. Thanks. (even laughed at the “bark” joke) Gonna use it soon as possible👍😀

Good video buddy lots of rigging but you did it safely and that's a tree worth the effort

I can appreciate all of the camera angles you've getting here. Great editing of all those shots. Camera setups make getting your work done 3x more difficult huh! Thanks for taking the time to do it so well. Your saw sure gets after it!

Yeah at least takes 3 times as long when shooting video. Or longer. Thanks for the comment. I will soon be doing a video about sharpening my saw chains and why they cut the way they do.

Nice job on pulling that one out. Glad you was checking for safety hazards, that big of a tree could play havoc real quick on you. My wife said she accepts shipping product anytime . 😂 great job there Sir. Thanks for sharing.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Год назад
Yes definitely have to respect large heavy objects, they can mess you up pretty quickly. If Bonnie wants to arrange shipping that would be fine. although it might be cheaper just to come get it. The cedar I’ve seen coming off your mill might actually be prettier than our incense cedar.

Looks like a Farmi 351 winch. That is what I have 👍I just read your about. It’s a 501. Bigger.

It’s bigger and it’s also very old. They last a long time, so I definitely recommend them.

Nice identification of the bark on the dogwood...but how on earth did you know the downed tree was an Incense cedar?

I used the dogwood to sniff it out for me.

Do you have much trouble with your cable getting bound up on the drum and being hard to pull out?
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Год назад
Not very often but it does happen sometimes. Keeping the drum brake working helps and preventing situations where things go slack inside the drum and tangle up.

Isn't a triple line doubling a double line? Wouldn't that be 4x the power minus the loss on pulley resistance etc? Just wondering.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Год назад
It would 4X the power if I was to run the end of the line to a second block on the log, then back up to the anchor by the tractor. Since I’m only running it back and hooking to the log, it’s only 3X. However number of lines there are between the force and the load is how many X. In this case, there were only 3 lines between. I hope that made sense. If not, let me know and I can give it another shot.
@ironmule
@ironmule Год назад
Yes I see. Still trying to play around with a 501 I got recently.
@ironmule
@ironmule Год назад
Yeah that's truly a triple line. Down, back, and down again. Not 4 cables. Would have to have 2 blocks at the load.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Год назад
Yep exactly. If I wasn’t able to pull it with the triple line, that may have been what I ended up doing.
@BrianConley-xm5rh
@BrianConley-xm5rh Год назад
You gain nothing by going back to the log. Force is only multiplied by the movable pulleys. Same as having an overhead pulley
@davereade4017
@davereade4017 Год назад
You 3 blocks to get 3 times the pull
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands Год назад
You need three strands between blocks to 3X the pull.
