Just curious, have you ever glued the two hooves together to create extra support??
@TheHoofGP
@TheHoofGP Год назад
No - it would hurt them - the digits move independently of each other so it would create a HUGE amount of pressure on the axial (inner) wall of her hooves

@ashross5860
@ashross5860 Год назад
in my years of watching, this has got to be the smoothest fix. I see some red, but it doesn't look like it's hit corium, and the pain level disparity from before and after have to be STAGGERING. Agonizing before vs a perfectly comfortable after? You love to see it. All there is now is just time for the hoof wall to regrow, but it doesn't even look exposed or vulnerable.

Graham, you should have a hoof pick with you for this reason, so you can pick out bigger stones or debris, from cracks without dulling your knife. ❤
@redwitch12
@redwitch12 Год назад
I was mumbling the same thing to myself--I've been around horses, so I know how useful and surprisingly versatile a hoof pick can be when it comes to sparing a good knife edge as well as getting into spaces where the knife has trouble gaining leverage :D

I roll my eyes when he is going after rocks and nails with his cutting tools! Where are the hoof picks and pliers!!
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle Год назад
Yeah, absolutely this. They're the perfect tool for getting into narrow grooves, and digging out both the big stones _and_ the grit-filled dirt compacted behind it. Plus, they have much better leverage for popping those nasty little rocks that get wedged into the hoof out, versus the longer blade of the knife.

Hi Graeme, wouldn't a hoof pick (the tool we use to pick horses' feet) be the right instrument to remove those stones? They don't need sharpening ;)
@DonnaWhittingham
@DonnaWhittingham Год назад
It looked to me like the hoof on the pasture-raised cow has a slightly different composition than the barn-raised cows. The pasture-raised hoof looked relatively softer and a little more translucent than i've seen on barn-raised hooves. I would think there would be. It's the first time i noticed it though so i was pleasantly surprised i did. Keep up the excellent work, Lads! Thanks for sharing it with us all!

just a suggestion, see if you can get a series of screwdrivers, mainly flat heads, of varying sizes, maybe even an ice pick or two to pull the stones out of the hooves, that way yo won't dull your knives and you could dig the stones out easier.

Hey Graeme, I really appreciate your channel. I grew up on a farm in granite-country New South Wales Australia with a typical herd of 30-40 cattle (all wild rejects from stock sales), between 4 and 10 horses, chooks, dogs, and between 800 and 1200 sheep depending on the season/shearing etc. I love watching your channel with my 12 yr old girls and "townie" husband - because it helps us connect with my farming past - and all the grotty, fun, painful, visceral reality of farm life. Thank you so much. It's so great watching you support your kids, wife, extended family! Well done - seriously.

I hope this is an acceptable place to ask a question. In earlier videos, you describe how to trim a corkscrew claw by sloping the surface toward the center of the foot, so that it might tend to straighten out again as the cow walks. Do you still do this? If not, why? I live in the suburbs in the USA and have never met a cow -- though they seem like nice folks! I love to watch your videos. Keep up the good work. 🐮🐮🐮

Shouldn't you avoid putting glue in the back part of the hoof, because it could possibly put pressure on the soft part of the horn?
