Pulverising Soil with Cement Mixer then Tumbling Glass

Playing with new cement mixer to see what other jobs it can do. It has a 1.25 cubic foot capacity, and seems to break up my soil quite well, but i think the moisture content is a little high which results in clay balls forming over half an hour.
The cement mixer hower works well breaking up and smoothing out glass, the results after an hour or two tumbling is pretty impressive, with some glass being broken down to sand.

It's as easy as it looks, old cement mixer, throw in some glass, put water in to about the level of the glass and tumble for a day and you should get some nice results. If you want to break the glass first you can just wrap some bottles with an old towel (or in jeans) and smack with a hammer. Ideally you would use steel bearings, then you would also get some neat looking glass sand. Brick or anything hard helps speed things along, but you will get those contributing to the sand / grit build up.

lol, so in short for small amounts of sea glass, just go to harborfrieght pick up a tumber for 30-50 bucks, smash up some glass in an old pair of jeans pick out the pieces you want to tumble, put em in and tumble. Thanks for watching, and taking time to comment. If you want, I will go pick one up and make another video ? :) have a great (whats left of the weekend) ...

If you dont care about the sand, then just use brick, i wanted to use it in concrete counters so, I prefer to just tumble the glass without the brick. One thing to note, this is loud, so if you have neighbours it isn't going to work... you can go to harbor freight and pick up glass tumblers very cheaply, go to harborfrieght , search for tumblers and you will find the perfect stuff for making a small batch of sea glass. You would run these for a couple of days indoors.

Not intentionally, although it is naturally the result. I have very heavy clay soil, and found the cement mixer is good at breaking it up ready for planting. As for the glass, to take the sharp edges off, and after several hours makes a nice batch of sea glass. The polishing of the glass, naturally results in polishing the inner surface of the cement mixers drum. Thanks for the question and comment !

Well, take a look on craigslist, you often can find a great deal for them there. The motor on this one burnt out very quickly.. I'm almost happy it did as I have a lot better one running now. Have a happy new year, and thanks for watching and commenting.

would a cement mixer work well for heavy clay soil which tends to "brick"? I got a load of cheap soil seems like 60% clay 40% (rough estimate) sand or so, when it dries out it becomes hard as a rock

Yes, very loud, in fact I would pick up a pair of the ear protectors from harbor freight if your going to be doing some. I did it in my basement and in my garage, because I was doing it for weeks on end. But, as long as your neighbors are inside, or at work ... its not going to be an issue.. Also, I tied a sheet of canvas around the open part of the mixer with rope (like a lid) and that reduced the noise a lot, Thanks for the comment, and have fun

did you come up with very smooth pieces?? or just smooth enough not to cut your hand when you hold them.?

That is so helpful thank you so much i cant wait to try this. Also if i try this with a rotary rock tumbler would that still work because there is no way i will be able to get a cement mixer HAHAHA *Smiles*

you know I regard craigslist as my storeroom ... sell it when you don't need it, buy it when you do ... you can make money as well if you don't mind a bit of haggling.

Its better than that, you can also search for 'harbor freight digital savings' to get a 20% off coupon, and if your instore, you can pick up a free screw driver set :)

Rough time understanding what you were saying. Next time could record the video and do a voice-over on your PC before uploading? Otherwise good vid.

All those little shards of glass coming out to cut people and animals, wonderful. Need a hazmat suit just to be in your garden

Peter Sab thanks for watching the video and taking time to comment. No my yard isnt littered by the bodies of little animals which have been decimated by my careless dumping of glass shards all over my yard :) The most dangerous thing in my yard are my little ShiChi puppies which I discovered killing and chowing down on baby bunnies :( that had made a home for themselves in my hazmat garden.

Peter Sab I thought it was glass initially, but its probably water droplets, so you need an umbrella rather than a hazmat suit Peter !
