Yeah. Gotye's instrumentals give it a sort of cadence that suggests the person is desperately trying to hold on to their sanity and is on the verge of losing all sense of right and wrong.

I really appreciate how well and carefully blended the two songs are. Parts of the instrumentals are always combined beautifully. However, when the vocals of one song are playing, the instrumentals of the other song take lead behind it, making every moment feel like a true mashup.
I think what makes it darker besides Gotye's amazing instrumentals is that "Somebody that I Used to Know" gives us more context to "Pumped Up Kicks". It tells more reasons for the school shooting to take place. In STIUTK, Gotye is slowly getting insane after a breakup of a toxic relationship, and even after they have broken up, Kimbra (I think that's her name) still treats him like shit which makes Gotye believe that she's well, somebody that he used to know meaning he can just kill with no remorse so he stole his dad's gun and the shoot him first, and then all the other kids with the pumped up kicks which may include the girl herself. This means that this is the perfect mashup.
It took the comments on this video for me to finally understand. I mean I guess I had some idea, but I was hoping i was wrong. Guess not. It's so catchy though!
It’s eerie in a fascinating way. Very surreal. And the tone change in the second verse was jarring in a really weird way. Kinda threatening. Stunning. I love it.

Mayo Cult I loved both of these as a kid, but English isn’t my first language so I heard them on the radio or on CDs without actually understanding the lyrics. I just liked how they sounded... I understood some of “somebody that I used to know”, but I thought “pumped up kicks” was just some “cool guy sings that he’s cool” type of song. I was so shocked to learn the actual lyrics years later-

picture this: you are really good friends with the kid that everyone makes fun of. you get in a car crash and die, and that friend is really sad. you're all that he thinks about now, day and night. one day the thoughts become too much for him and he turns to his dad's gun for answers. he decides hurting those who hurt him will make him feel better but when he fires that first shot, he realizes his mistake and you start crowding his mind, a hallucination trying to convince him to stop. but he knows there's nothing he can do but keep shooting bc no one will care if he stops now. he pictures you crying next to him begging for him to stop but he doesnt. he keeps shooting as his vision is being blurred by tears welling up, thinking about you...
From what you said i think of it as they are both guys and best friends but one of them is gay (the shooter) and loves the other guy and was planning on telling him by taking him to this beautiful place and telling him how he feels but as he was driving someone else crashed into the car which then killed his friend, and that made him descend into madness because he was the only thing he had left, so he went to get the gun and started shooting up the school thinking there was nothing else left to lose.I hope this is not rude changing the story lol but this is just how i see it
All the memes aside, this is a really interesting take on a mashup, most of the time its the background of one song and the lyrics of the other, but this switches between them. Very unique, i really like it!

I take it like this: The quiet kid and the popular kid were friends. The quiet kid lost it one day and shot his friend's girlfriend. Now the popular kid is now trying to talk the quiet kid.
(I know this isn't that deep but I thought it would be fun to come up with my own story for this mashup because I saw others doing the same) This strikes me as two shooters working together. One is more angry and bitter while the other is more of a sad-angry mix. He's a bit more hesitant to be doing this with his friend, he recognizes and thinks of all of the other people at the school as actual people. Still, they are people he "used to know". The rest of his lines are him remembering the torment he received from his fellow classmates. Lastly, the female voice is someone that "used to know" either one or both of the shooters.
The female is one of their mothers expressing her dissapointment and always knowing one of them was always fucked up in the head and was an abusive son.
