it's that time of year again :D one of my favorite seasons! we love growing pumpkins, they are so easy, they grow so fast and are beautiful. in this video we go over the growing requirements for pumpkins, some common problems we have experienced growing pumpkins and some tips.. Pumpkins are super heavy feeders.. they need lots of nitrogen at the beginning of their growth.. you’ll see in this video these plants are young and already lacking nitrogen.. we mixed lots of blood meal in the soil rich in organic matter, they love it! If your pumpkin leaves are yellowing they are in need of some nitrogen.

Take some aluminum foil and wrap it around the base of your transplant this will prevent the squash bug getting into your pumpkin vine, and it should help with the rolly pollies.

Realizing this is an old video……. I planted my first ever pumpkins this year 🤩. They started out great, but then the heat-wave of 2023 hit 🥵. They are in full sun, and are watered regularly, however, now the vines are starting to die off. They have only produced male flowers, but in abundance. I am in Louisiana. I feel like the weather has been my enemy, and I don’t think I’m doing anything particularly wrong - it’s just been so hot (and humid🥵). Do you have any tips for “protecting” pumpkin vines from crazy excessive heat?
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening
hi margaret! something that really helps pumpkin vines stay strong is making sure their adventitious roots get rooted in the soil in several areas off the vine. I haven’t figured out how to add a photo in the chat here so I will post it on Instagram tomorrow of what to look for☺️

Nanci B thank u nanci😊the pill bugs were a Big problem when we didn’t have much vegetarian but now that the garden is full of decaying vegetation they aren’t as much of a problem.. we will still occasionally use bug & slug killer for organic gardening when starting asian greens direct sow... there has been some talk about it being harmful to earthworms but i have researched this and have not found any supporting material to back this and the bed that grows all the asian greens still has plenty of earthworms🙂

How do i know when its time to plough up my pumpkin vines and plant fresh pumpkin plants???
@gilmourishgilmourish6205

Hi, 👋.. I kept seeds from a pumpkin two years ago. Usually I dry them and bake them in the oven then eat the inside.. but yet I kept some and grew them this year. I put the seeds in some water for two days then planted them in the garden. Next thing I had the seeds growing 😃 so I made a little homemade greenhouse around it to keep them safe. Now I took the greenhouse away to see three beautiful flowers which I want to keep. I know absolutely nothing about growing pumpkins so I want to raise the leaves but I guess that is not the way is it? Just leave them crawling? Don’t they need to be removed as side-stems of tomatoes to get more flowers ? I don’t want snails to eat them ! I have no clue what to do next!
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening 4 года назад
hi! how fun! sounds like ur on the right track.. keep ur pumpkins Fertilized so that they get all the nutrients they need to grow big vines and for battling snails check out this article: www.treehugger.com/ways-get-rid-slugs-naturally-4858817. let us know how it goes🙂

Main vines can be pruned when it reaches ten to fifteen feet beyond the last fruit you are leaving on the plant. Secondary vines(or runners) can be trimmed when they reach ten to twelve feet from the main vine.. are u asking about removing leaves or just raising them?

My pumpkins don't even open up to hand pollinate, get yellow and die. Any tips?
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening 4 года назад
hmm, there is a short window of when the female flower opens.. ive noticed just for a few hours after the sun is up then they close and if they don’t get pollenated they will die. Id pick out a female flower that hasn’t opened yet early in the morning and watch it throughout the day and see if it ever opens, u may be just missing the time of day it opens. here r a couple of resources that talk about problems with pumpkin pollination but it sounds like u may have a stressed plant, could b several reasons: ask.extension.org/questions/584451. www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/pumpkin/pumpkin-flowers-but-no-fruit.htm.

My first time growing pumpkins 🎃 😁 I'm having a problem with the powdery mildew, I'm in Oregon and it's getting cooler at night, and leaves turning yellow and brown, dying, is that normal? and what do I do about the powdery mildew? please and thank you for the videos, very helpful 😊
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening 5 лет назад
Lori Rockriver hi lori🙂 our pumpkins will get yellow leaves that die back when they are lacking nutrients... we feed them with a organic water soluble fertilizer, and also get them side dressed with Dr. earths fertilizer. for powdery mildew if it’s just starting I just cut the leaves off and throw them away, also a baking soda water mixture applied with a little pump sprayer will stop the spores from spreading.

there can b several reasons.. are they getting enough water.. do u have grubs in ur soil, they will stunt the growth of the plant before it gets a chance to grow.

@SouthernCaliforniaGardening
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening 5 лет назад
Miranda Santos hi miranda! so far we have only had two and have had to trap them, we have learned the steel traps off amazon r the best, some that doesn’t distrub the tunnel very much because they will just bury it if they think a human is messing with their tunnels. we also have to trap rats, we have rats regularly and if we don’t trap them they will eat all our garden veggies eventually😐

Love your videos. Just one thing though. Those plants you describe at the beginning aren't cascading over the edges of the boxes. Cascade means to go in stages - like a cascading waterfall that hits several ledges on the way down, like a stair case. Your plants are simply draping or hanging over the edge, but definitely not cascading.
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening
@SouthernCaliforniaGardening 4 года назад
ahahaa i just filmed today saying how we let some tomato plants cascade over the raised bed😹i’m such a dork.. And thank u for the correction, i Love knowing the meaning of words but had this one wrong.. i used to tell my youngest son when he asked about a word “lets look it up”🙂 what a great memory.. i will use draped over for now on! thanks again😊
