The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the ru-vid.comUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.
Perfect timing! We finally got our rescue pup almost 2 weeks ago now, and I must admit I didn’t expect leash training to be so difficult but in her first 5 1/2months of life she’s rarely been on a leash. So we started putting it on her whilst playing indoors and walking around our garden. We have yet to venture any further as the rescue recommends not walking them for the first 3 weeks as they need to settle, but she’s getting better each day :)
My fiance and I are getting our first ever puppy tomorrow night. Your channel has been absolutely incredible in getting us prepared for what to expect, love your content!
Thankyou Rachel, you are literally a lifesaver! My 4 and a half month old pitbull puppy Zara has learnt some really bad habits because I did not know how to train her well. Nearly everything I've been doing with her from day 1 is wrong. And I've been following so many different trainers and training methods but none of them are working, all that has happened is that me and Zara are totally overwhelmed and confused. Now I've found your videos I've deleted all other dog training videos from my play list and I've gone back to absolute basics using your training methods. AND ITS WORKING!!! Just the last month I've seriously considered giving my puppy up or even having her put down (she's a "restricted breed" in my area, so she would be put down at a shelter) she is uncontrollable on a leash, in company or in public, and worst of all her puppy nipping has become aggressive with me and has drawn blood on myself, and overexcitedly done the same to several guests in my home, and strangers while outside walking. I was beginning to think she really was becoming an aggressive, "dangerous" dog, and also I knew I couldn't control her. I knew too that it was my fault, not hers, because I was inadvertently teaching and rewarding the wrong behaviours. But like I said I've become overwhelmed and confused by so many different training programs and techniques that were not helpful for me. Mainly because these people are not showing real life situations, with untrained dogs, especially the TV show trainers where they only show a snippet of the bad behaviour and the training then a magically perfectly behaved dog and results. This is completely unrealistic. I love how you show your own dogs, and Wally, in real life, although you edit your videos you don't edit out the amount of times and setbacks etc you practice and respond to. The main thing I've learned from your videos so far is that A) I'm expecting way too much from my puppy and B) I'm setting us both up for failures and frustration by doing this, also C) I need to make every day moments and situations count as training and reward sessions and make them FUN FOR ME AND MY PUPPY. So, again, thankyou, Zara and I are going back to basics, following your real life experiences and examples with training, and also I'm going to be throwing out her food and treats, switching her diet to fresh and raw foods and treats. And I've been looking everywhere for a treat bag and a front clipping harness and I will definitely be buying the ones recommended in this video. I love my puppy and now I have hope and confidence that I can train her well, treat her better and enjoy doing so, and best of all she will be happier, more confident and healthier. THANKYOU 👍🙏💕
I love to see my puppy’s progress, at first when he was a bit scared or stressed he really didn’t know what to do. After we’ve been training a lot more he ALWAYS comes to me to tell me what’s wrong and i’m so proud
Oh my Goodness! I have been wanting A Dog For quite Sometime Now! And you have showed me the BESTEST dog Protips And sites For me to convince my parents to get a dog! I have recently told my Friend how MUCH I wanted a dog And she wanted one too! so i was Telling her About your channel!!! we have been Non-stop Researching and jotting down notes! we have never sawn a better RU-vidr That is honest, nice, grateful and who actually wants to save ALL the damn rescue dogs! Thanks Rachel :)
Thanks for the tips! My mother’s trying to convince my dad to buy me a 1 and a half year old male pomchi which I met the owner at the park and he’s fostering it since the dog’s previous owners were abusive. The dog’s AMAZING and so perfect and I so hope he doesn’t find a different home because I just can’t imagine getting a different dog. He’s so calm and amazing with kids and other dogs and lovable with strangers and potty trained. He’s so perfect and I hope my dad says yes soon 😔
Potty training and crate training my puppy with your videos was a BREEZE. We’re a little delayed on leash training due to shots & then having a really bad winter while living in the country… started back up and leash training has been so hard 😅 trying these tips with my yellow lab!
We have an 11 wk old Frenchie who follows us around without a leash, but the moment we put a harness and leash on him, he sits and stares at us when we call for him. Needless to say, we're starting leash training right away with the tips from this vid. Funny thing is that he's already got his Sit command down during mealtime that he learned from our two cats :)
This video was a good refresher for me. My puppy used to be really well behaved then we got a sibling and didn’t get to work with him as much and since the weather will get nicer soon, we will have some more training sessions to bring the good behavior back!
omg this is the video I’ve been looking for!!! Our 5 month old rescue is making slow and steady progress...but struggles the most on leash. Looking forward to this! Xo
We’re sooo excited to try Honey’s basic commands outside tomorrow-going to replace our longer walks (which aren’t going well) with that for a week and see how it goes!
Are there tips and suggestions on how to prevent the puppy from obsessing over biting and chewing the leash? Or trying to bite hands as you go to attach a leash?
Yes!! If you watch closely, you’ll see Wally bite at the leash in this video multiple times 🙄😜 Watch how I don’t pay attention and I keep moving forward (ie redirecting), staying exciting and rewarding when he’s NOT biting the leash.
I adopted my dog from a rescue and she was one year. She’s now two years old and we are trying to learn how to walk on the leash but I need to start in the backyard now and hope that helps .
I have been loving every video you are putting out because we are getting a puppy in the spring after our old man dog of 17 years passed away last October 💔 I know it’s going to be a huge adjustment and it’s been a loooong time since I’ve done any sort of training with a dog! Thank you for all the tips and help with recommendations for items because I’m going to need those too!
I just got an 8 month old pup four days ago. He's a big boy, but sweet as can be. He has the kindest eyes and I just fell in love instantly. He is a rescue and was living in a foster home in an extra calm neighbourhood up until now. However, I live in an apartment in a busy street in the middle of a big city. Boy, oh boy. What a change! He gets very excited when he sees me getting the leash, he truly wants to go outside. But the moment he sets his feet on the sidewalk he's all over the place. Scared, agitated. He then either gets stuck, trembling of fear, or pulls with all his might on the leash towards somewhere. My arms are burning from trying to guide him -- he's *really* strong. But the thing is: we live in an apartment. He HAVE to take him out multiple times a day. And he'll keep on pushing on that leash no matter what. He pulls for many minutes on end, even when I refuse to walk. He cries, he doesn't seem to relate the fact that his puling = me not walking / changing directions. I've been training attention cues at home, and he's actually great at them. He's a very smart boy. But outside there's just too much input all of a sudden. I can't even get him to a calm spot, bc he won't let me. And he's not food/treats-driven AT ALL. He couldn't care less, nothing will get his attention, except for me sometimes, but only for a fraction of a second. I've bought many different sorts of treats too, but his fear is clearly overwhelming... I'm already talking to a trainer bc I don't really know how to proceed on getting him his confidence in such an environment. All videos I see here on YT seem to have perfect conditions of training, which is great but many of us don't have and can't always control.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this beautiful video... I enjoy very much watching your video:). Can you do a video on how to teach a dog focus, cause I’m training my dog to be my service dog and I need her to focus when someone come by or when my husband is around she doesn’t pay mine to me ?....she is a German Shepherd.....three years old and a rescue I rescue mother and daughter together. And also not to be afraid of sound....thank you so much:).
Hey! I watched your introducing a new puppy to your cat video and was wondering what advice you have for where to have the puppy sleep in his crate when we have a cat who must sleep in the bed with my fiancée. Our cat is obsessed with my fiancée and practically sleeps on his head, but in your video you said to not let them interact until days/weeks if necessary. I can put the puppy’s crate in the kitchen where the cat won’t have access to, but I don’t want to make the puppy nervous by not seeing us while we sleep
I make dog treats out of sardines, peanut butter or pumpkin and egg. Puree and bake on parchment. I cut them while still warm. Also, lightly boil chicken liver then cut up and dehydrated makes good treats
For your video I’m also be getting a puppy I already have quite a bit of stuff before I get when I want to make sure I have everything for my new puppy. Also going to be taking him to the vet or her.
Hi there! I hope you have an amazing day/night of yours! 😄❤️ I think it’s about after 6 months, then after a year or more, switch to one meal a day ( don’t trust me cause I’m just trying to remember what I learning from research and watching Rachel’s videos)
Hey!! So I stared feeding mine two instead of three around 4-5 months. A friend of ours has a very healthy, very happy 7 year old Bernese mountain dog who eats twice a day. Once early-ish in the morning, and once in the evening. Hope this helps!!
Love your videos! What do you suggest to help stop barging out of doors. We’ve been working on stay and touch and my doodle does really good until it’s time to go outside
Get a y shaped harness if you must use a harness! These restrict the shoulders and can cause damage. Also the harness won’t stop the pulling. You training your dog with the tips and advice mentioned in her video will help with the pulling. Good luck!
Hi Rachel, i've been watching your videos ever since i got my puppy back in August last year and tried to apply as much as possible. While I find your videos very helpul, it sometimes feels a bit frustrating that you are showing these tips when they already work, meaning for example it s clear this is not Wally's first time walk and he already is trained. For us first time owners, there is a lot of frustration and difficulty when you try everything you did on this video but somehow does not work. Can you maybe also share with us some of the ways to cope with the process of training a pup when it also does not work? Thank you!
YESSS! I get that. And this was one of Wally’s first times on leash in front yard believe it or not! This is why I highly recommend working with them on attention activities before working on leash, makes a world of difference Also, here’s a good how to with examples of challenges! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OXzKy4g-Ius.html
Hey I need a new harness for my puppy, specifically for sailing. We are starting in the summer. I love this one but I don't think it will work on the boat. It must have a handle for when he inevitably goes in the lake.
Why don't you like the harness on the back? I have a puppy miniature schnauzer, and the harness we got has clips on both the front and the back, but because he's so small atm, I feel like the front clip would cause the leash to be in his face. Thoughts? Thank you so much for your videos! I have LOVE working with him during meal times, and have even been taking his raw food for short walks around the block to work on commands outdoors and it's working so so well.
My puppy must go outside ..no back yard...how do I keep him inside for days or weeks training with harness then leash..? He refused to use pee pads...help!!
@@RachelFusaro indeed. Normally I fast foward videos to get to the point. Yours are perfect 😍 Quick question how do I get my pup to stop biting the leash and actually wanting to do things rather than trying to play tug of war. Get her to focus more on me ?
Hi Rachel really helpful video and has come at the right time for us. We have had our nearly 11 week french bulldog Milo since he was 8 weeks old. He learnt sit, his name and paw quite quickly. He knows lie down with a treat the rest he can do without treats, he anticipates paw before u say it especially when we do have treats. Milo had his last vaccinations last Friday so we can take him out this Friday coming. Our issue is not so much milo pulling the leash but biting the harness, and leash and even rolling on the floor sometimes trying to get it off. I am about to order another harness hoping this one will be better as it sits much lower on him, under or near his neck is a no no. I guess we just need to practice with him more. We do practice training before meal times so will keep that up now with the harness on to get him used to it. He knows touch now without the command so will keep working on it. We only started that yesterday after watching your video so he is a fast learner and very food motivated.
@@ali-vq1nn thank u we have made progress, the new harness is great! Cheaper than the Amazon one I was going to order. I picked this one up from our local pet store. Been out on several small walks, and Milo is more focused on everything around him so no more leash biting for the most part :) all the best with your dog/puppy to 🐶
Does he wear the harness all the time when you take him out? Or just when he is leash training and walking? For example, I take my dog out every 2-3 hours to potty train through the night as well. Should I just use the collar and leash for this or harness all night? Thanks!!
I use some of my puppys kibble at meal time for training. Inbetween those times im going thro alot of training treats and worry about her weight gain. Every training video ive watched they constantly reward with treats. What do you suggest with this issue help please.
Hello, I’m getting a Belgian melinois pup and I have never properly trained a big breed or any breed before. I’m new to this, I want guidance on where to start and progress. I want my dog to know that I’m the alpha and I want him to listen and obey my commands. It would really make me happy.
Hi Rachel, I am getting a dog soon and my back yard doesn’t have a fence around it and I want to teach it to be in the backyard without a leash on. I know my neighbors dog just wonders around there yard but I don’t know how to teach my soon to be dog how to stay in the yard do you have any ideas?
hey rachel essentially you would want to teach recall but you can buy a 50 ft leash on amazon and strign it from inside your home onto the dog this is what works for me
My puppy refuses to leave the house, refuses to wee and poo on puppy pads or outdoors. Chases my cats and Rabbits around and when you tell her of she misbehaves and barks at you.
Do you prefere male or female dogs? I’m getting my puppy hopefully next week and for every video I’ve watched from you i have written down notes and so I’m ready to get my puppy 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
I prefer male dogs if you want something easy to train. Female dogs are normally a lot more stubborn. Whereas Males are super easy to train. Males are also normally bigger than Females. So it all depends on what you want.
Hi there! I hope you have an amazing day/night of yours! 😄❤️ I would give advice if I knew any good advice, sorry! (It is more of an opinion but there is pros and cons of both genders)
Love watching your video. Getting a puppy probably in may.been buying items. Can't find the wildebeest treat holder. They don't know when they will have them. Hopefully by may 2021.
My puppy is not food motivated. she barely likes eating her meals and I even found a few stuff that she likes but she gets diahrea and I don't know how else motivate her when training
