In this video we cover a few details to make the process easier and take less time. Plan out your route to the same door, same pee spot every time. Determine if removing water at night is helpful, using a crate to keep your puppy safely contained and learn to have their own space. See what it looks like as a puppy is learning the command "potty". Please ask questions, this process is fluid and different for everyone. However the one thing to make it go as quick as possible is consistency!!

I learned a lot with your tips today and I will put it into practice right now! I'm late, our Bernese Bonnie arrived 1 week ago, she now has 3 moth, and I didn't start potty's training, my bad, now I payed my price cleaning a lot her potty... Wish me luck!

Yes It might be a bigger hill to climb as dogs thrive on consistency and changing up what she has been doing will take a little longer. But if you commit to the consistent routine and keep her world small (xpen to a smaller area) or tether her to you for 100% conisistency, you will be successful!

My Berner female, Meadow is 4 months. Very few mistakes now, but still challenging. I have succeeded in her meal training. She does not "eat" until told to "eat". (Videos) She is in a flimsy did enclosure on the patio outside on our deck daily with a couple toys. She is not allowed to place paws or jump on the wire. That took a while, but now accomplished. (Videos) My issue still remaining is potty, not poo. I call her my Dr. pepper pup, because she is 10-2- and 4 dog I take her out at 10pm, she takes me out at 2am and 4am, I take her out at 6am, then 8am then, 12am, well, every couple hours. My wife and I are laughing, because we use the exact sound you do with all our dogs. When I use that sound, she immediately stops what she's doing and runs to me for a treat. That was accidental training. We'll keep watching... Our first Bernese! Ben & Dee (retired) I use "here" for come. She responds well, except when she doesn't. Still working on that

Great job! I would start pushing her 2am and 4am wake ups to only one. You can easily eliminate one now. She just needs practice on that, otherwise she will fall into the routine you keep, which right now is waking up every 2 hours.It is up to you to be the leader to dictate the schedule at this point. She will get it! Great job on your training!

Our Berner is nine weeks old. The challenge we’re having is peeing in the house soon after peeing outside. It could happen within 15 minutes after the last break. He doesn’t let us know he has to go again. I’d appreciate any thoughts you may have. So glad we found your channel! Thanks!

I would take a urine sample to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a UTI. Then just work on taking him out every 20 minutes, the same route, the same door to the same patch of grass consistently when he is out of his crate. Make his world small so you ALWAYS have eyes on him and he can't go away to pee. He will get the idea, it can take boys a bit more time. But with consistency he will get it!

SitStay with Stacy Slade The nurse in me wonders about a uti. I’ll call the vet today. I also wondered if his world was too big as he occasionally sneaks around a corner to go inside. Appreciate the advice and encouragement!

This is so helpful! If the bedroom is on the second floor, would you let the puppy walk from the crate to the stairs and down them? Or would you pick her up as soon as you open the crate door so there's not a chance of an accident? *Also, is it ok to let your puppy walk down a flight of stairs at this age? Thank you!!

I assume your puppy is 8-10 weeks old, and the answer is no, they can't navigate stairs and as they grow it changes daily as they learn how to become coordinated, which my 10 month old puppy still can't do stairs well. Their eyesight is also not very good until about 6-8 months old. I would carry they puppy as long as possible. Is it your bedroom that is on the second floor? A puppy won't know to hold it for awhile because they won't distinguish as to where they should or should not go.

Thank you so much for these videos! Do you have any tips on potty training while living in a condo/high rise?
@SitStaywithStacySlade

Hi Roma, That is very difficult. I generally don't recommend raising a Berner in an apartment, they need to go outside every 20-30 minutes, some times emergent. You could try astroturf on your balcony...

Thank you so much for those videos. We will be new puppy owners in general as well as of course new berner owners so I’m gulping everything you say. What about during the day? How many times do they go out to potty? Ours will be 9 weeks when we get him. Thank you!

If they are up and active start with every 20-30 minutes. Don't wake them up to go. About 15 min after eating they go.

@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you so much! If we don’t have a fence yet, is it ok to take the puppy out without a leash to potty in the back yard or will they run away?

Hi there. We are getting a Berner next month. Had one until a few years ago and she was amazing ❤. I am worried however, that we now moved to a large house. Do we keep the new puppy in her X pen for a couple of months? We can get her outside easily, but during the daytime I am concerned about the amount of space she would have to run around. At what age do you suggest letting them out of their play pens? Will they jump out of it? Do you have a brand you suggest? We are definitely going to need to do crate training too at night.

I would put her in the pen when you aren’t directly supervising her. It can be her safe space. It will take time for her to learn her route to get outside, you will know when she can handle the responsibility of more space.

Our 16 month old berner koda, is a total cool berner, but the last few trips to dog parks, he,s been getting into fights, drew a little blood from grate Dane, were thinking of getting him neutered next week, u have any thoughts, have u had berners in the past you've neutered? You have a neutered vid? Thanks for all you do
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 4 года назад
I neutered my first boy after I finished his championship because for the same reason as you state above, other dogs start reacting to their hormones. I also stopped going to dog parks as I realized it wasn't worth it to risk my dog's safety. At 16 months old, your dog's growth plates are likely closed or close to it (18 months is top end when they close) so I would say go for it. The hormones are challenging, I get it! But do make sure the contract you have with your breeder doesn't stipulate the age for altering. Good luck!

Do you keep the puppy in an x-pen all day if not tethered to you?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade 3 года назад
No, I have a small house with a big yard. They are either out in the yard playing or in the house with me. But keeping their space small or in your eyesight is important.

Should I just set an alarm every 2 he overnight or wait for a whine - also is crate in bedroom or near door at 8 weeks ?
@SitStaywithStacySlade
@SitStaywithStacySlade Год назад
I would put the crate next to your bed for sure. Maybe the first two nights set your alarm, but you really want the puppy to wake you up when he has to go. You don’t want to wake him up to go as this will be the routine you establish instead of the puppy telling you when they need to go, which gets longer fairly quickly if you wear them out before bed.
