I know it sounds cruel, but soothing a puppy when they're whining reinforces the behavior and will only make it worse over the long term. The better alternative is rewarding moments of him being awake but calm, so if he stops whining for a second jump in during that moment to tell him yes, good boy, settle.

OMG thank you SO MUCH for talking about the snuggle puppy! My puppy is 8 weeks and we have been trying to crate train her for a week and she hated it. We bought her a snuggle puppy yesterday and she LOVES her crate now!! Another reason to love you!

I just got an eight week old golden retriever as well! He just turned eleven weeks! We named him Hank! Goldens are just the best!

the dating thing... i actually really believe getting an animal together with your significant other is a great first step towards marriage or kids :) seeing how your partner takes on responsibility and their kindness towards an animal, even more so a baby puppy/ kitten is a really good indicator for how they'll pull their 'responsibilities' in a marriage and how they're likely to treat their future children. my husband and I got a dog and moved in together before we got married and it was the best decision ever and really solidified even more so heck yeah this is the right person I'm with lol

Hey Gretchen! One question I had was in terms of what tricks you want to teach Brody, and when will you start teaching him commands (or taking him to a puppy training class)?

Hey Gretchen, super excited for you that you got Brody, he is absolutely precious! But I just want to encourage you to be cautious with all the overabundance of advice you're getting, in the same way that you made the right decision for you by going to an ethical breeder to get Brody, please also do your own thing when it comes to raising/training him and please seek out a trainer who is a member of an organization like the IACP who is a professional and can give you sound advice. I have a masters in animal science, work in the animal industry, have two sport dogs who I train and love with all my heart, and some of the comments you get recommend some things that are really not advisable for dogs. Just a kind suggestion, I appreciate that you've made the best decisions for you, and I hope you keep on doing that :) We may not raise our dogs the same, you and I, but I would just recommend you take everything with a grain of salt.

Congratulations on your puppy! My husband and I got our golden in March and we love him so much! He is now 6 months old. Our golden puppy was pretty energetic from the start but he was the most rambunctious from the litter. I think energy level depends on the temperament of the dog. :)

I’d also recommend introducing him to teeth brushing! Teeth and mouth health for dogs is so important because other issues can come from that as I’m sure you know, but I introduced my dog Mila to brushing her teeth when she was a puppy and she doesn’t mind it. I’m able to brush her teeth everyday and now she’s almost two and hasn’t needed a dental cleaning yet and won’t need one for another year or two, so it saves them from health troubles and saves you money! You and Max are doing so great with Brody, and he seems like such a sweetie 😭♥️ I just wanted to tell you something I’ve learned along the way ☺️

a really good teething ‘toy’ for puppies is to get a kitchen towel, wet it, tie a knot in it and put it in the freezer to freeze - this soothes the puppies mouth :)

my family got a lab a few years ago and you would be surprised how difficult it is to find puppies of popular dog breeds like that (i’m sure you know) and it took us about a year too. it’s so hard to find available dogs and for the breeders to call us back!

Gretchen, look at getting a Newfoundland puppy for a companion for Brody! The breeds mix so well together and Newfie’s are known as the gentle giants. They are sooo sweet and calm.

you should look into the brand farmers dog for dog food when he gets a little older it made my dog more energetic and made his coat stay shiny and soft and just makes him the most happy!!

You didn’t go over board. We had toys, puppy pads so we didn’t have to take him out the car. We totally needed the wipes. We had a 7 hour drive each way. We never used his crate either. He slept on me or on the floor in the backseat with his toys. He loved it!

Brody is super cute and it seems like you want the very best for him. Holding him on your lap or putting him on the passenger floor is very dangerous should you get in a crash.

Our golden is now 9 weeks old his name is Jesse.

I miss my golden. HIs name was Sundance and we lost him in February.

I’m sorry 14 pounds did you say?! My golden is a couple days older and five pounds!!

Please whatever you do DO NOT SHAVE YOUR GOLDEN when he gets older!!!!!!!!!!! It will ruin the coat forever and it will never stay the same again. It will NOT help with shedding, staying cool, or comfortable. You can ABSOLUTELY trim his butt fluff, front leg fluff, and a bit of his chest fluff. But everything else he REQUIRES for staying cool and then warm, and protecting him from the elements. I know you want the best for him so please don’t forget about this part. He will be suffering and uncomfortable but he doesn’t have the words to say so, and being a dog he will not show weakness If he doesn’t have to. But if he cannot regulate his body temperature because his fur is gone he can get very sick. If you love him please do what’s best for his wellbeing. Daily brushing and monthly full grooms with dog blow drying will absolutely help him out and you for cleaning purposes. -Advice from a long time professional groomer

Golden retrievers have three types English cream and American more normal golden colour dark red colour is Canadian golden if want to kno what colour you golden pup is going to look like look at the ears normally darker then the body and when picking up your puppy for the first time and make sure to bring a blanket to rubdown his or her 'brother 's and Sisters and mother dog put the blanket on his bed I would also use ice cubes at night to cut down on bathroom breaks rather than a large bottle of water ice cubes and carrots are great for teething good luck golden are the best my golden is my service dog and he has saved my life when fell unconscious due a illness Rocky went and got help woke up to the police ambulance fire department in my bedroom and golden laying on top of me nudging me with his nose bless when I got out the hospital rocky got the biggest steak and bone I could find him and a big kiss and cuddle

Goldens should not be anywhere besides their backyards for the first 16 weeks since that is when they have their full shots. Bringing him around everywhere outside the house with not all his shots is such a bad idea.
