Amazing. Can you please show how you teach the eyecontact and the heelwork with a puppy

Hei, really enjoyed this short video . The question I have is about the whistle signals . It seems I cannot hear the difference between the sit command and the hunt after the sit which allows the dog to pick up the dummy. It might be due to recording, but it would be great if you can explain. I know you already have a video on whist commands but I do not think it goes in to the details. Many thanks in advance. Elena

What i have noticed after watching a couple of these videos that no food treats have been used. Which is great because every other trainer does use food treats and I always have and it has caused overfeeding.
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314
In the gunDog world treats can often encourage a lot of bad traits that I would not want. Also I want the dog to do it because it respect me and wants to please me and not because he's getting something to eat.

May I ask, why do you give the left and right direction hand signals from your hip height, as opposed to face level like you do with you back hand signal?
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314
Hi there, it's really important later that the back retrieve command is very different from the left or the right. A lot of people will struggle to get a dog to handle correctly at distance as when you get further away from the dog. The preciseness of the hand signals is watered down so having a very clear back command and a very clear left and right helps the dogs understand the difference between the commands.

@@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314 Thank you so much for your clarification. Sound logic. A really smart puppy. Alot going on in such a short time frame. Keep up the good work!

I have a 18 week old and he’s getting frustrated and bored with the restricted rules about activity .. 20 mins … and is easily distracted when out in my locality and garden … done as much as I can do in hallway … when can you train off lead like this … how do you motivate them to do it? I note you don’t treat reward him … he tends to eat grass in my garden rather than work. He will do it a couple of times but nibbles grass after then
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314
Hi there, there's an awful lot of things here that would need to be discussed and looked at impossible for me to just answering even one. Paragraph it may be worth looking at doing some training with me that will give you the structure that you're looking for.

Me too. I have a 4 year old cocker who we homed off a friend who couldn't look after her. Lots of what you do with Charlie really works for her even tho she is four, she just needs a little longer and more practice. It would be amazing if you had any more tips for older dogs but, either way your content is so useful. Massive thanks.
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314
You're pretty much right and what you Said with an older dog everything takes so much longer to teach. As in a lot of cases you'll have to unteach stuff to be able to be in the same situation to move forwards, persistence, consistency and repetition is key.

Ahhhh no eye contact! That's when she sets off for the retrieval. Hopefully she will wait for back command

These drills you are using to teach are great. You break the desired behavior down to nice easy to be successful steps.

I got my first field cocker and he is 10 weeks old and very very busy and smart. I work him everyday and started heeling work this week. Watching this video and seeing your dog at 14 weeks doing these types of retrieves I have to ask how much are you training him a day? I work mine a few times a day with this type of training, but is it realistic to think he will be doing anything close to these type of retrieves by 14 weeks at the rate we are going? I want to be fair to my dog but not sure what to expect from him from daily training. He is retrieving pretty well, but based on his puppy brains, thinking it will take twice as long to reach this level. BTW thanks for the videos, they are a great help training my first ECS.
@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314
So the first thing I try and make very clear is that I work at a very fast pace as I have an awful lot of experience. People can do what I'm doing at four months with a dog at eight months. I will still be massively pleased. I only train 10 minutes a day in the evening, that's it

@@hampshirespanieltrainingwi9314 Okay! I have been training ES and a Brittany for 20 years so I do train for field already, but this is completely different (my setters think retrieving is just for humans). But I feel now we are on track and have realistic expectations. I am heeling a few minutes twice a day and I do the retrieving work at night before bed too. The rest of the time its puppy learning to be a good mannered family member. Thank you! Very helpful.

Really enjoying the blog series, does the pup live in the house or kennelled? Many thanks Billy

Thanks, I’m considering getting another pup having lost our Springer about 18 months ago. It’s been a while since we’ve had a pup and wouldn’t have the kennel option. Watching your posts have been educational and informative thank you for putting them out there
