Your tow vehicle advice is spot on. So many people don't listen to this advice. As someone that is in the Towing and Recovery business, I cant tell you how many calls we've gotten with accidents due to high speed and not having the proper braking power. You usually learn your lesson about the tire pressure after you have a blowout doing 55mph that causes further damage to the other axle, wiring, and tire. Most RVs have only one spare so after they call us out and get that service bill they usually learn to check all tire pressures before they disembark.
Great points. So important to have the right tow vehicle. The dealership will sell you as big of a rig as you want. We bought a travel trailer to pull behind our Expedition, and we were right at the max weight when the trailer and truck were ready to hit the road. I drove 3500 miles, through mountain passes, heavy rains and high winds. It was downright scary at times. I did that once. I then bought a diesel Excursion. The towing experience between the 2 was night and day. The diesel Excursion is built on an F250 chassis, vs the Expedition which is built on the F150 chassis. Safety is paramount. Thanks for all of the great tips!!
Wow! That sounds terrifying! Very glad my husband took the time to explain this to me. I just thought he wanted a new truck! lol Although I'm sure getting a new truck was an added bonus, knowing that we can safely tow and stop the rv is paramount! Thank's for sharing! You may have just saved someone from making the same mistake!
Jeffrey wade Thank you so much for joining us Jeff and welcome to our Odd Family :) This is all new to us, but we are blessed to be living the “American Dream” while seeing how beautiful she really is :)
I just found your channel and I love it!!! My best friend and I bought an RV off-season as well, and looking at what it is going for now - WOW, did we get a deal! We did a lot of research, like you guys, and prioritized EVERYTHING before we started buying, and we had to buy everything for it. We also camped locally so we could work out the bugs and learn about it, which was at the beginning of this month (May 2019). We identified issues and are bringing it back to the dealer before we hit the road in a couple of weeks. We won't be out full-time yet, but soon! I loved your video of how to make money! I need to re-watch it and take notes!
When we bought our present travel trailer the rear dinette was going to be used for my Amateur Radio. Little did I realize that under the seat of the dinette was the inverter. Lots of electrical noise so I bought a small tent to set up outside. Love the videos and don't take the nit picking comments to heart. You guys are living the dream that others only dream about and are jealous.
I can’t stop watching your videos!!! Just ran across you guys today. My wife and I have been talking of this “lifestyle “ lately....getting older...You two are of One....just like my wife and I. Thank you So Much!...sharing wife my “better “ half. God Bless.
I'm really enjoying reading your comments. There's something so awesome knowing that this time last year, John & I were binge watching RV RU-vid videos too! Now it's come full circle. It's very humbling! Thank you!
Very helpful! Thank you so much for this, the idea of selling everything and living in, travelling, and working from an RV is really appealing to me. I will continue to watch and God bless.
Glad you liked them! That might be a video we do after we visit the RV manufacturing plants in Indiana. W'ell be there in late September. Thank you Terry👍😀💚
While there is some advantage in having the weight of the trailer in the bed of the truck you can very safely pull a travel trailer with a properly configured weight distribution, anti-sway system. Many accidents happen because the WD system was under sized or improperly configured.
pmh1nic you are absolutely correct! There is no one size fits all. And as long as you are pulling safely- that's the most important thing. Thank you for pointing that out. Hope you subscribed!
On our F150 it will hit the trailer brakes if it senses the trailer swaying. It will also turn off the cruise control, apply the brakes of the truck, and light up the dash. The first time was very terrifying as I thought we had broke something. The weight distribution bars and antisway systems are worth it if done properly.
Enjoying your channel. We are looking to buy a fifth wheel from Forest River also. You mentioned buying off season and that is the plan. The price is marked down but can one get it for lower than that?
Thank you Mary! Glad you enjoyed. We would also recommend a low ball offer. Worst case, they say no. Also, shop around. Pit competing dealerships together. Good Luck. :-)
@John - Happy Wife Happy Life! Love this video b/c you guys put the effort into knowing what your limitations are and what you needed to do this full time. @ Mercedes - being organized and having a plan is key. Stay Real!
hi there rv not so odd couple , you guys are great , never boringggggggggg, did you guys ever do a video on rv security systems ,??? with all the thefts of catalytic converters on rvs , it would be perfect to see a good HONEST video , of which i know you would do , and im sure it will help many as well, keep up the great work
Have you done a video on the tools you found helpful in your RV life? Also have you done a video on items needed for your RV? Things like type of power cords and what about winter items for your RV and you guys?
We have booth. John has a tools video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mJipF34-bBE.html and we created a "glamping" essentials here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5hYCUSXstyQ.html
Hi! Just found your channel and love the great info! I’m looking at TTs now for an early 2020 purchase. I will be living in one place in the TT for about 10 months, so a bit less stressful as far as moving, but still need lots of good advice on lots of other things. Mercedes made a side comment about getting the right hangers, so I’m wondering what are the right hangers? And what else would you advise about long term rv living? Thanks!
I’m hoping to buy next 6mo to full time. I really want a good chassis and a good solid dependable build - how do I know what to look for? Nobody says what is actuallly good. I’m handy even as a 74 yr old lady, not scared to work on stuff, but I d rather only work on simpler systems that I can repair.
Great question. John spent a lot of time researching online. The Forest River offered us the best quality for our budget. Research research research. You still have enough time. Remember new rigs sometimes have issues. So make sure you go to a good dealer.
Our experience with extended contracts are that the dealership needs to accept, and admit there is a problem before the manufacturer will authorize the work. We had a design issue with out 5th wheel. The furnace is located at the very rear of the rig and was not powerful enough to push the hot air into the bedroom at the front of the rig. The dealership said the manufacturer said that the heating system is working as designed. Contacting the manufacturer directly said that it's up to the dealership to file a claim. When we attempted to bring it to a different service center they found that an "inquiry" on the VIN was already done and they refused to do service on it. We decided to pay another dealership, out-of-pocket, to put in a second furnace. They said that they didn't want to get in the middle of this situation because dealerships depend on each other for parts and personnel to assist them with repairs and they didn't want to jeopardize any relationships with them. We ended up finding an independent RV repair guy and paid $1400 to have a second furnace installed in our rig. All lessons in life have a tuition of at least $1000 so between the cost of the extended warranty and the second furnace we learned how the RV industry works. Wonderful!!!
Thank you for taking the time to share this Steve :) Very helpful information. We canceled all of our EW within 6 months of purchase because they never honored them.
Mismee Matters Hi Mismee, Most RV manufacturers offer an upgraded insulation and freeze protection for tanks and piping. We purchased that option with ours. RV’s are difficult to insulate after they are built but it can be done.
Hey John, we’re currently in the market for a new RV. We’ve been RV’n for many years but this will be my first 5th wheel. Are there any particular makes you would stay away from or any you would recommend?
Hi Mercedes and John! Thank you for the update. I’m looking at Class C, new. If you remember, I got a stroke and Deb’s got cancer. Hopefully, NO cancer! Class C has balloons front and sides. (balloons?) I think that your model, Class A, has got no air balloons, right?
Balloons! No, air bags. That’s it! You drive 5-wheel. Ok. For some reason, I thought you drive a Class A. Anyway, safety comes first! See you on the road! 💪🏻
My mom was organize while dad was messy. "It was his mess and he knows where everything was." A little bit hard to hear you with little one a bit loud. Are you going to be talking? What about how to of setting up? What about how you move about when it's meal time? My parents had a 5th wheel but it was stationary. My eldest brother purchased a boat and your same safety features were needed as well. My other brother purchased size after size up. Currently he has a large truck to pull about a 32 foot.
I'm a recent subscriber, but my wife and I are looking forward to retirement, and going full time rv. I drove a truck for over 20 years, so I already know I want a fifth wheel, possible goose neck configuration. I have decided on diesel, and dually. Torn between brands. I personally do not like the gm products, but prefer a Ram or Ford. Can I ask what your choice of truck was, size, and why?
I chose a GMC 3500HD diesel dually mainly for the Allison transmission. I am so happy that we did RiverJody. The perfect truck is a Ford chassis, Cummings diesel, and Allison transmission. Unfortunately I can't get that truck. I have owned all brands of trucks. The only one i really didn't like was my Dodge 2500 diesel. Loved the engine but the body started falling apart after 3 years.
@@RVOddCouple Thanks so much. I've noticed that about the dodge also, though I own a 2013 1500 countryman right now and love it to pieces. Ford has always been my favorite truck though. Hey, can you show your dog sometime? we are animal lovers from hell!
I'm new sub who is going to be Full-time solo 72 yr old and have looked in the same area of Punta Gorda as my son has a farm there which I'll be using as a base for 4 months. Exactly what is OFF SEASON in FL? I'm thinking between the humid summer and when the snow birds fly down for Christmas:)Assume it is cheaper there than it is here in Vegas,NV to buy and pay fees involved in FL?
Off season in Punta Gorda is typically Easter to Christmas. RV parks are definitely cheaper and empty in the hot summer months. Save a lot of money by renting monthly. Thank you Dennis 😀
LUV watching your videos. I am starting my own youtube channel also and I want to find your video about how to start. We are hoping to do the same as you and explore. God bless your journey!
Awesome! We are having a lot of fun but there is definitely a high learning curve to RU-vid...Here is our Membership link and God Bless you as well 👍😀ru-vid.com/show-UC4xN2fR45tG0M2Fm1w4PPTgjoin
Every dealer is the same, they don't pay their service people crap, they go from dealer to dealer, I have been buying them for years, almost all rv's and there components are all made by the same 2 company's, so you pick your floor plan and get your best deal, then you call your warranty company either good sam or cornerstone, both good, and ask them to recommend a service provider, trust my experience I owned 1 unit for 3 years and it spent 17 months at the dealer I purchased from, we finally gave up and traded it in. With that said good luck with. your unit.
Oh my! This is not encouraging. Thank you for sharing your experience. May I inquire why you feel Good Sam and Cornerstone are good? Especially considering your less than stellar experience?
Hi guys, I just found your channel and love the tips. I have been 5th wheeling for a number of years, I pull a 30 ft with a 2500 Silverado. But I do have great concerns for your family's safety with that large of a rig I would suggest you look at HDT. You can find them a whole lot cheaper than any of the big 3, yes the HDT would be a used rig but one with 500k on the odometer it still has many many miles left on it. A Volvo 670 with an iShift transmission and delete the 2nd axle and it will pull much better than any 3500 or 4500 class truck. Since you do lots of research take a look at this site. rvhlifestyles.com I know when I go full timing I will be going this route. Safety is my biggest concern. Keep up the great videos and have fun, hope to maybe run into you someday.
Gosh I'm trying to think of a way to say this without seeking like too much of a mean guy. I really enjoy your videos but I am having a super hard time listening to them with the child in the background. Maybe it's exacerbated because of the regulation of my sound system as well which makes it much worse but I had to fight the urge to shut it off because the sounds were that annoying.
This is why l stay single: What you want: “I want to be out in the middle of nowhere away from people.” Reality: Buys 42’ 5th wheel trailer and can only stay in crowded expensive RV parks with full hook ups because the wife wants a house on wheels.
I know you have a child. I know you can't leave your child outside on the picnic table while you film a video. All the same, having someone talk over your video makes for a right shitty viewing experience. 59 seconds into your video, I peaced out. And have a thumbs down for your efforts.
