Dude first off enough with your Arizona comparison. Painter WILL NEVER BE LUTE OLSON. And Purdue will never have the talent or skills that Arizona players have who produce NBA talent yearly. Second, Robbie and whoever this dude is are clearly ignorant to the fact that Purdue labors to win games they are up a ton like Penn State and Illinois because of a lack of in game adapting. They haven't been able to break a press in years and do I really need to speak of Fainter's postseason failures on an epic level??? I think you all are too much of a Homer to admit a change is clearly needed. Painter will never change his coaching style and he doesn't deserve a lifetime gig at Purdue. And this is from a guy from Valparaiso much like Robbie. I love Hummel but he's damn wrong.

You guys missed the ball on this one! You both fail to mention the real problems. Wide open or not why are you shooting 30 three pointers against this undersized team? We ranked 281st in 3 pt percentage. Why is Edey guarding guys out on the 3 point line? Imagine throwing a 2-3 zone at this team! Why is Smith dribbling so much? Watch how Miami broke the press… then you attack once you break it not slow it up. Painter draws up horrible plays out of timeouts, he doesn’t even use his timeouts half the time. 3 years of this stuff is called a pattern not an accident. Painter is the common denominator not the players. He fails to adjust. He’s had the talent, he’s just too stubborn to change his ways. A final four will never happen until he figures that out

This not only 3 consecutive years losing to a double digit seed but 3 consecutive years of missing wide open shots and having mental break downs... Add to it the Cincinnati collapse the AKLR collapse, and the VCU layup drill and there are 6 examples of Painter coached teams collapsing mentally in the tournament...

As a Purdue fan I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that Painter is a good coach in March, however the FDU game is anyone but Paint and Edey's fault. The gameplan isn't the problem when you go 5/26 from three when like 20 of those 26 were essentially warmup shots with no one in 5 feet of the shooter. Getting that many open three's is good gameplan on Painter's part but every gameplan looks terrible when you shoot like that.
@olivedjazzer
@olivedjazzer Год назад
I think it still falls on Matt Painter cause he didn't get them loose enough in emotions/mental preparedness. They looked timid like they were afraid of making the mistake. There are any number of theories underlying this but I still think it comes back to the coach. Further evidence would be his inability to rally his players all season when teams were making runs. They ended up just squeaking by or losing in multiple games in which they held 15+ point leads. Just once I think we'd all love to see Painter snap a clip board mid game to get some attention/reaction from his players cause drawing more X/O's in those huddles is clearly not accomplishing diddly.

There were also 0 made layups from the Purdue backcourt. The athleticism between the two teams was very apparent so when your team can’t drive to the basket and can’t shoot threes, idk how Purdue thought they could make it far.
@55van86
@55van86 Год назад
OK, but if you drive to the basket with Gillis, Loyer, Jenkins, Morton, Furst, & Kaufman-Renn, they will back off of Edey. When the 3s aren't falling an adjustment MUST be made. There was no adjustment and everyone but (ironically) Loyer completely sh#t the bed. By a factor of 100 the worst loss in program history. Maybe NCAA history.

The head coach has to be held accountable. You don’t shoot 30 three pointers against that team!!! You just don’t! Regardless if you’re open. You drive the ball. Set more screen and roles. You don’t play man to man and have edey out on the perimeter. Run a 2-3!!! No adjustments. Terrible coaching. You all accept mediocrity and make up excuses for painter. @YTSparty

I see a lot of similarities between UofM football and Purdue basketball. Both have a very rigid inflexible style that works great in the B1G regular season. Not so much post season. Purdue counted on 2 things happening. 1) get ref calls on Edey 2) good perimeter shooting. When MSU played Purdue in W. Lafayette, if you breathed on Edey you got a foul. At that point it's a guaranteed basket for Edey because no one can guard him. Neither happened against FAU. And FAU exposed the fragile style Purdue plays. When all scoring goes thru Edey you limit the potential of the team. Is it a shock that shooters are flakey when their duty is to set up Edey? It's like "hey they shut down Edey, now shoot some 3s". It's not something you can do on demand. Purdue needs to have more distributed scorers and abandon the giant post-guy thing.
@FunkSoulBubby
@FunkSoulBubby Год назад
No excuse for it but here's a random observation: Tobin Anderson basically knew he was going to be the lowest seed in the field. Sure, he's planning for a play-in game, but at the same time, every single coach expecting to hear their team called out during the selection show is tuned into CBS directly beforehand as the B16 championship is wrapping up. So in the last 8 minutes or so of the game against Penn State he saw exactly what to do to try to beat us (not a difficult recipe really). So it's possible we got beat as much by Shrews as Anderson. That said I know neither how nor why more B16 teams didn't throw the press at us constantly in conference play.

You still have to ask why Painter won’t EVER play a zone against a team like FDU and St. Peter’s. Why does he always play 3 guards. Gillis and Furst could play with Edey. He needs to coach better!!! And it does define him at this point.

My biggest concern was not the missed open looks, I hate that teams like FDU use their speed and skill to spread Purdue out and draw their bigs away from the basket, opening up drives, shots, dishes and putbacks! Painter is a man-to-man at all costs guy, and has been destroyed for that mentality in three successive double digit tourney upsets! Is Purdue incapable of throwing in a zone defense? Painter needs to dictate the play with his strengths, instead he allows his teams to be spread and dissected.
@TheCrazyeyeskillah
@TheCrazyeyeskillah Год назад
Really surprised they didn’t mention system at all. Painter is evangelically committed to his system, which involves a big guy and people who can follow it, no matter how unathletic they are. The shooters he has are not good on paper. Morton is not good. Loyer is not good. Braden Smith is too small. Enough with these guards who can’t penetrate. You need guys who can shoot the open three, and when the open three isn’t there, they have to be able to dribble and draw. Morton has no business being out there. Can’t shoot, scared to shoot, and he can’t drive to save his life. Painter needs to join 2023 and get out of 1970.
@ericgrill4585
@ericgrill4585 Год назад
The result of the game was Painter's fault. As a coach you have to make adjustments in game depending on what the other team is allowing you to do or depending on what your players aren't doing. You can't stand on the 3 point line and take bad shots, epically when your players are going cold. You have to get their confidence back. Cut to the lane when Edey is being double and tipple teamed. Drive the ball to the rim, make the defense commit then find the open guy for a shot or cutting to the basket. Run the most basic play in basketball the pick and roll. Push the pace for short periods of time instead of walk the ball up the court all game long. Do something other than take bad 3's.

I just want an answer on why Painter played Furst 9 min. He went 2-2 from the field with 2 boards (1 offensive) and 1 assist to 0 TOs in his 9 mins. The high low worked with Furst Edey. We could’ve used Furst for more offensive boards being the 281st ranked 3 pt % shooting team. We could’ve used Furst as a secondary post option with Edey with the way FDU was defending Edey. Instead we just missed open 3s for the entire game…and players were getting scared to take open 3s while Furst sat on the bench! Granted Furst did pass on an open 3 but his size/speed was needed inside the arc vs FDU!
@huntstyle
@huntstyle Год назад
Agreed. Furst is a beast on the offensive glass, he could've cleaned up some of those missed 3's and still gotten a bucket out of the possession. Not to mention preventing them from getting offensive rebounds, which they got way too many for how small they are. I also thought TKR should've gotten more than 4 minutes. He can guard on the perimeter better than Zach, and chances are they wouldn't be triple and quadruple teaming TKR. It was just frustrating to watch because Painter never tried ANYTHING different, he just stuck with what wasn't working the entire game!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have been saying that the lack of top-talent guard is the biggest problem! Illinois had NO point guard, especially after the failure of Skye Clark (actually, he was about what the rankings said he was-not the top tier but , he could have been, good. He just turned out to be a quitter! (Probably dad was encouraging him to quit, transfer, “because you’re special.” Everyone talking Underwood or Painter, NEITHER OF THEM HAD TOP GUARDS! Illinois had NO ONE WHO WAS A LEGITIMATE THREAT AND FACILITATOR. Yes, Matt couldn’t hit anything the last 6 games, but with a point guard both he and Terrence would have been better (everyone would have been better) with a top tier point guard. The funny thing is that last year Purdue’s superstar point guard had to have the ball and penetrate. His shooting from outside was better the young guys this year, but he needed the middle open (he and Zack worked against each other); however, freshmen ran out of gas (it is a long season for freshmen) and could not shoot consistently that last quarter of the season. It did not get better in the big dance. I love Matt Painter, and I hope they can get some of the missing pieces. LAST: Do not underestimate that each of the lowest-seed teams winning was playing with a lot of seniors and older transfer players. The mirror image matchup was Arkansas (with even more great freshmen…taller, more athletic, but not great shooters) struggled all year against more experienced teams. With Arkansas, unlike Illinois with Skye QUITTING, and with Jaden Epps still not back to be a make-believe point guard, the talent pool of athleticism enabled big wins. Illinois never had the guard talent of Arkansas, and I thought from the moment of that opening round 8-9 announcement, they again were matched against a team that was going to take them out.

"All you got to do is pass it back out and hit the open shot" Well, duh, if they would have hit the open shot we'd not be having this conversation. That's what happens when you're not hitting and they are, you get beat. St. Peters game we needed Jaden Ivey, but he refused to take the offensive lead and wouldn't shoot, wouldn't go to the basket, don't know what his problem was. There is absolutely no need for talk about getting rid of Painter, he's a proven winner, the tourney record are just a game like any other, just more fan excitement. I'm an IU guy, but here are my hypotheses, based on what I've read from Purdue fans and boards. I'll probably mess up on a lot of these, but I'll take my best shot. 1. Painter is an emotional robot. I remember IU assistant coach Yasir Rosemond coming into the locker room after the Hoosiers won at Mackey. He was fired up, dancing with the players as they played music in the locker room, and gave an impassioned speech. And this is an assistant coach. Hearing interviews, it's like Purdue players are trying to avoid the questions about the chemistry in the locker room. IU may not have had the best team on paper, but there was a bond there. Woody, Ya, and company got something from them. I've never seen Painter do that. There's just something that I don't see in that department. Look at Eric Musselman at Arkansas - he was ripping his shirt off after they beat Kansas in the Round of 32. Would Painter ever do that? Doubtful. 2. Painter relies too much on analytics. As one Hammer and Rails mod put it, Painter is basically coaching like he's doing math homework. The rigidity of his system forces a lot of players who would normally be creative to put up the shot that Painter wants them to take. Basically, "It's what the numbers are telling us." Painter basically lets a computer run his coaching life, and it influences his inflexibility, which gets passed on to the players. The one exception is Carsen Edwards, who basically defied Painter's orders and got Purdue to the Elite Eight in 2019 by doing so. Then Purdue runs into another rigid team in Virginia, so it's almost like they played themselves. 3. Even if it's old-fashioned, the Big Ten is still a "bruiser's conference." I actually like the "bruisers" of the Big Ten, but I understand it's out-of-date. But obviously inside conference play, there is some benefit to it, because of how grueling the conference is. As the season goes on, the wear and tear of the Big Ten leaves you tentative come tourney time. Also, since you're playing non-conference teams that are faster and probably more "modernized," you leave yourself very vulnerable. You could make the argument with most Big Ten teams, to be fair. 4. The athletic department - and some fans - got what they wished for. They wanted a homegrown guy. They've given him the job security. As long as he's in the top half of the conference, that'll always be "good enough." Making the tournament is nice, of course, but that shouldn't be the bare minimum goal. So, I think many in the AD (not necessarily the fans, although perhaps some can be included in this) are content to "just be there." That's what I've got for now.

FDU outplayed Purdue Speed over size. Three things that caused this historic loss are : 1 Inability to stop penetration on defense which allowed for a number layups and caused Purdue to be in rotation which hurt the block out assignments. 2. Purdue was unable to take advantage of FDU press. Eddy got a few easy scores but no else was able to capitalize of the press. 3. Lack of shooting. To me it looked a lot of time Purdue had a four guys on the perimeter which magnified the reliance on shooting. Turns out Purdue became one trick pony with total reliance on the big guy.

Purdue has lost its identity since the Kramer and Baby Boiler days where we just outworked everyone. I haven't seen that for a few years.

It's not talent, effort, or coaching. All the big teams I watched in the tournament looked gassed to me. No legs equal missed shots and step slow on defense! And before anybody says MSU, well they played one less conference game and early exit in Big tournament.

I’m not a Purdue fan, but to say this was the biggest upset in NCAA tourney history is a reach. There’s more parity now than ever before. Some of those 15 seed wins over 2 seeds in the 80s/90s were more notable.

@@christiansingleton9331 Not necessarily. In terms of talent, Princeton’s win over defending national champion UCLA in 96 was more inpressive

Spoken by someone who doesn't know history. He's made an Elite Eight and 5 additional Sweet Sixteens. Ask Iowa and Illinois, and IU fans how their March runs have gone over the past 15 years. Yes Painter needs to figure some things out, but let's not pretend he's the biggest failure ever in March.
