You're early this week Gavin 😋 Always enjoy my weekly hit, another excellent tutorial. My first backdrop was grey, apparently thats the easiest to turn black or white or even coloured with gels ☺️
Thank you so much. Love your videos and how you structure them to get the message across. I owe a lot of what I know about photography to you @GavinHoey. Thank you, and please keep your videos coming.
Very clear & actionable presentation. My question is how important is it to get the black and white background perfect or near perfect if we have access to good photo-editing software? With a plain background it should be relatively easy to mask the subject and brighten / darken or fully replace the background. Probably easier to hide the join if the original background in the raw image is close to the intended background.
I really enjoy a bit of post processing, but the thought of having to create unique masks of fine hair on a dozen photos just to make the background black or white isn't one I'd relish. Fine for a one off but more then that, getting as right as possible in camera would be my recommendation.
Gavin, what is your tether set up? It looks. Like your using a tablet here and it also captures the image. Is this an android tablet on a tether USB c? We need an updated tether class on today's tablet or portable monitors. Just wanted to say you've been a revelation to me Gavin. I traded all of my old system to m43 and loving it.
I wanted to ask the same. I'm fighting to create my own ones for the AK-R21. I don't understand, why isn't there an official kit with the "right" gobos/slides. @GavinHoey Can you guide us please, from where can we get "normal pattern" (like window, simple circle, the first pattern on Chloe's face etc.) slides/gobos?
Hi Gavin! Have been a fan for quite sometime and that took me into Adorama's store in NYC!!! Quick question: the camera is tethered how? CO w\ an iPad? Brilliant in all aspects and highly motivational! Cheers Carlos
Hi, great video. Thank you for your great work, which I am following closely. I have a question about using a flash with an optical modifier combination. Isn't it dangerous for the model to flash into her eyes? Thank you for your info.
In my mentors old studio I use to shoot on black exclusively ..background for the dancers was a pure black. I realized a few years later it must have been that the drapes were a pure black thick velvet...when I moved I used a different set of black drapes...lesser quality velvet and the black wasnt as deep..I guess this had to do with absorbtion.
Excellent video again! Question regarding the model´s hair against the white background. It is very easy to loose the detail in the hair when trying to make white background white. I saw some loss of detail already in this video. It becomes even harder if model moves slightly backward and forwards (for example when photographing kids). So the question is that is it really good to have same f-stop at the back of the model as in the front?
For the AKR-21, I see on Adorama's site that there are several lens options, including 50mm, 65mm, and 85mm. What do those different lens options do for the projector?
Thanks a lot Gavin 🙏. These videos are so much fun to watch and so useful. You always make things look so easy, but I guess that’s “just” a great photographer with tons of experience knowing what he’s doing 😉
But, but, but... It's only Tuesday! I thought "waow, they have gobos for the AK-R21, now", then I saw that you are using discontinued stuff. So, please Adorama, Godox, anybody, make them available, please. TIA.
You’ll probably not see this but if you do could you tell me what the projector is with the speed flash in. I cannot find it on line, and I cannot see it on your product list. Thanks
Hi, I've a question about AK-R21.. Is the 65mm stock lens usable to project patterns on the model's skin (like Gavin samples) or 50mm is better? Thank a lot!
When I look up this projector with you link - I don't see where to get the gobo slides - I see the other sliders available but where do you get the geometric shapes and lines that you were using? -PD
So I rendered the projector you used in this demo but where did you get the blinds look transparency? In none of the slide available even from GODOX they don't seem to have them.
Where can we get those gobos for the AK-R21? I have the kit, but I'm struggling to get the right pattern gobos/folies. I'm trying to print to myself by creating with vector graphics, but the (print) quality is not 100%, so I'm not satisified. Could anyone find the right pattern gobos for this kit? Where can we get them? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.
amazing video and thank you so much for the super informative clips here. I just wanted to ask, for the projector, where did you get the gobos from? the ak-21 doesn't come with those :D
Hi Gavin, where do you get the gobos for that projector. The ones included are more like scenes. Are they homemade? Also where did you get the Sekonic orange case? Thanks
Thank you for the video Gavin, very helpful as always, but can someone tell me how to meter high speed sinc because my camera goes up to 200 then is high speed sinc…
Great work as always Gavin 👍. I’d not seen that projector before and am now keen to purchase one, can you confirm which gobo slides that you used as I can’t see them within the Godox packs available to buy, thank you
How about using a lighted scrim as a clipped white background. Meter across all the background to verify an even clipped lighting. Meter back of subject to verify background lighting is far enough back that it has not reached the subject. Finally add light to subject. The other unspoken bug-a-boo in any small studio is inverse square law. Tomorrow-tomorrow-tomorrow.
I'm using a TetherTools orange USB2 cable to connect my camera to my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 Laptop / Tablet. That runs OM Capture and OM Workspace software to download and display the images. It's a very robust and reliable system 👍
