Revisit Revisit of the Pure Evoke DAB Radios sent over by Lee! Can we get the Evoke Flow up and running with a new screen?
And while we're at it, let's have a go at making our own battery pack that hopefully doesn't explode.

Hi Steve, great video. I’ve changed the supply on my Evoke flow in the last year. It seems that the OLED displays have a finite lifetime and will once again eventually fail. There is a facility on the radio to cut the screen’s display time to seven seconds after you’ve finished tuning or actually touching the knobs. This will save the OLEDS from being illuminated for prolonged periods & hopefully giving them a much prolonged lifetime

Love the videos and have in the past few days watched most of them… and your subscriber count continues to raise by every time I look! Slight concern with parallel loading 2 cells since they ideally need one controlling wire per cell.

🤣🤣 Your face when the sound come out 🤣🤣 I'm crying that was Pure Funny! Now I stopped PMSL! The way you joined the batteries in parallel, you'd only get 3v The radio Brother Steve! takes 6v so you could have, done them in series, then being 7v it's like having brand new batteries installed, plus the same mAh out of both. + from 1 bat to the others - and the 2 outer + & - to your plug. That's spoiled my discovering & testing fun! now I seen those board/screens exist. 🤓👍🏻

😂 thanks brother Steve! I looked up the chargepak and it said it was 3.7v. But yeah, that kinda makes sense that it runs off 6.5v anyway via the power adapter! I didn't want to blow anything up though. Having charged it for a bit, the batteries don't last long at all, it says battery low within a couple of minutes, so I think I'll try the series method and see if it blows up that way! 🤣

I can 100% confirm it will Not! blow up, I promise you! The mains adapter and battery bay share the power circuit feed. The regulators etc.. will handle the batteries in series with out any issues. You'll get longer use and less of the battery is low warning. Unless you want to make a wiring mistake & blow it up! yourself, but do please film it 🤣

Because the batteries aren't perfect one will have a little higher resistance, lower capacity, etc. so they will get out of balance. They'll probably last a while but eventually you'll be overcharging one or undercharging one so they might explode eventually... You could add balancing circuitry or find a single large battery or just leave it I guess. The batteries will probably stop working right before they explode anyway.

if the original batteries are twice the cap[acity - then so will be the charge current!- stick another two in in parallell too and you will be fine - but you are going to be pushing the envelope in terms of charge current

I believe those white connectors are called JST-connectors. I’m just telling because it took me ages to find out what the different connectors were called that people used in videos. And also, with that kind of swearing I can only assume you worked at the docks before this gig. 😂

I think if you put the batts in series would do the trick better. I suspect in parallel you will always get low batt warning

Thanks Optical! Yeah, a couple of people have said that so I'm gonna try. You're dead right, the low battery warning never goes away, but it stays powered on for quite a while. I'll try it in series. Thanks for the tip! 👍

I was thinking of fixing my Evoke Flow recently. I opened it up and immediate thought 'nope'. I can't help but think these were designed with a built in lifespan. I bought it new about 6-8 years ago. It worked perfectly until I stopped using it about 4-5 years ago and sat on a dry shelf in the house completely undisturbed. Then recently I tried it and the screen wouldn't work. How can that happen?

Good stuff, well done! I can recommend a cigarette lighter for heatshrink tubing, just use the blue part of the flame. It takes effect immediately. I used to use the heat gun but it always blows it around and uses too much power. Click-Shrink with a lighter.

Over here I don't know of anyone that listens to the radio anymore. It's a shame because listening to the FM is free but most people pay the subscription fee to Spotify to get the on demand favorites. I am guilty as the next person but I am from US Georgia we drink moonshine so it's the excuse I can go with.

😁 that's as good an excuse as any, Oz! I actually still prefer the sound of an FM radio to a Digital broadcast, I find it much warmer. But having songs on demand is too good a temptation!

@@StezStixFix I don't want to carbon date myself but I really miss the 70s and hearing the crackel of the records. Then the jump from 8 track to cassette was a gift from the gods. Although being a techno nerd I really appreciate advancements in technology and Bluetooth makes everything better. What a world we live in when you can flush the toilet with your Bluetooth connected smartphone. With kids that is a blessing when you can double flush with your phone to clear the air before re-entry. Holy crap I got off topic.... the radio is becoming a long forgotten entertainment device.

5:32 seconds yes in a battery parallel series they gain more capacity and keep the voltage semi trucks do this and Tesla and what now even within a battery it's parallel with a certain voltage and capacity for each cell the battery itself being parallel doesn't increase voltage. Think about it like a alkine battery device like a Gameboy they have them in series I believe which is positive to negative which increases voltage. Something u can always do is download a battery pack calculator
