Mike Malaska is so underrated as an instructor. I love how he teaches and it is how I learned to play before I started reading golf magazines which had me struggling for years. Glad I found my way back to Mike and his great teaching.
Brilliant, simplistic and insightful description and demo of just what actually is the engine of the golf swing. The rest of the stuff being vomited to us on a daily basis is a bunch of overtaught, over complicated theoretical nonsense that sets so many golfers on a path of failure, total loss of confidence and frustration. Great effort in the wrong direction still results in lack of success. Thank you ,Mike for breaking through all the bullshit with your videos! You are one of the best instructors on the planet.
I did mikes Lto L drill every day for 3 months, 100 balls a day, my range in the backyard is only 140 yards, did 100 one day with pw & golf balls & 100 with 7iron & callaway foam balls, I 100% believe what he’s saying as it worked for me. Awsome teacher as long as you do the work which most people won’t.
Mike, this is a wonderful video and yet it opens for me more questions than it answers. At about minute 5:00 you say "your wrists - there is your major speed producer in golf". Well, I do believe this; however, it seems to be in contrast to another video of you released some 3 years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ga2LwYWer1Q.html Checking this video at about minute 4:00, there you argue (the ground force of) your left leg is the main reason for doubling the length of the stroke with an iron. Now my question: I believe clubhead speed is dominant factor for longer strokes. I can achieve with the driver without ball a maximum of rather poor 80 mph and with ball about 75 mph. I am dreaming of a total (not carry!) distance of 200 m (or some 220 yards) which means I need about 90 to 95 mph. What should I focus on to achieve this? Wrists or left leg ground force? Sorry for the long contribution!
The problem is timing it. Some are teaching to fix the hands and compensate the lost of speed with body rotation. Less dispersion this way. But sure, if you can time it, swing away with your hands.
Another way to look at this is to say that the body motions, while important, are reactive to the swinging of the club. He isn't saying "don't move your hips, shoulders, etc."; he's saying that they respond, they don't initiate. That said I don't like the use of "levers" and "leverage". A swing is a backwards and forwards motion around a fixed point. There is no leverage in a swing. Semantics maybe, but that's the concept.
@FGrecoJR well, that's a fair point. And, the most important thing is that it is a good lesson. In Hogan's shell's wonderful world of golf lesson, he talks about the power coming from the hips, then at the end of the vid he tells us to watch how he starts down; and, motions with his right hand. Now that is infuriating. But, grip the club lightly at address; and, raise your position slightly, so as the weight of the clubhead presses the handle of the club up against the heel pad of your left hand; and the sense of control that this will give you is incredible.
Lets apply that to throwing a fast ball..If a pitcher has to wind up to throw it a 100mph,can he throw it 75 mph with no wind up..This would be comparable to %'s of a 240yds carry
And now every average golfer goes 'i dont need to work on my body rotation. Mike said speed is in your hands!' 😢 Well. Yes. But good luck with your consistency when focusing to produce swing speed by your hands.
Ill buy the principle with the leverage system and all but definitely not buying the 245-260 carry with hips going backwards, one foot and all that other nonsense
I was thinking the same thing. Mike is by far the best youtube golf teacher. But hes doing the youtube launch monitor thing: "i carried my pw 185" You dont hit your 7 iron 245 in the air?
Have you never seen Sadlowski hit driver 300 from his knees? Mike is a former Tour pro. He creates speed with his hands. 240 carry is nothing with proper technique.
@@prorobo you obviously didn’t read what I said. He is perfectly capable of carrying it 260 but those shots weren’t it. I know what it looks and sounds like. His still the best instructor around
@@greatwhite3676 absolutely you can. He’s done it, I’ve done it in clinics, it is learning how to maximize speed while swinging soft. Last clinic just for fun we were making bets how car I could carry my pitching wedge. The longest was 173.5. It is in Utah and I am a powerful player. I coach an 85 year old who carries his driver 240. His CHS is between 89-95 with proper launch, equipment and spin he carries 240.
