Towards the end of his career, Roddick could no longer get himself to take risks with his forehand. He made few groundstroke errors, but even fewer winners.
@bbbazzinga
@bbbazzinga 2 года назад
The courts became slower so offensive players had to adapt to this, their risks no longer payed off so they had to add more spin to their shots, making them loose the traits that made them successful. The same happened to Federer only this is less visible because he has every shot in the book, giving him more tools for the adaptation but he also suffered. On the other hand players like nadal or djokovic were immensely benefited.

Prime Roddick wasn't only a serve monster, he was also very good from the baseline, the forehand was superb and the backhand was more than decent, plus he was super fast on the court. I can't understand why he's lost this way of playing in the next couple of years.
@bonzwah1
@bonzwah1 Год назад
His sprint speed was actually very fast, but his anticipation just wasn't up to average atp standards. I believe his coaching team had a bad read and convinced roddick to put more spin and margin on his forehand and try to rely on hit legs and his fitness to extend rallies. He cut down significantly on unforced errors, but also gave up virtually any aggression in his game past the serve itself. - Fast forward a decade, we start to see what roddick was trying to do when we see Medvedev. That is a player with a big serve and a commitment to grinding and never missing. That's what roddick was trying to do...but he just wasn't the guy to do it imo. I wish he never gave up that flat forehand.

@@bonzwah1 Well said. Connors told him the future of tennis was immense top-spin after watching Nadal rip balls like it was a hot knife through butter. Ironic enough though, the long-grindy-keep-the-ball-in-play style was what Roddick used to do back in his junior years. It's unfortunate that Roddick just stuck to that regime even after firing Connors and bringing in Stefanky. But whenever he played without giving 2 fucks about it being in-or-out, you see him beating the big 2 GOATS (Fed and Rafa).

@sup9542
@sup9542 2 года назад
Anyone who says this was a weak era wasn't watching. The weakest era I've seen is the era since Federer and Nadal slowed down. The current generation is finally starting to shape up, but it has taken forever. If Federer and Djokovic swapped ages, I bet Federer would have more success in the slow court 2010's than Djokovic would have in the fast court 2000's. With fast courts, a big guy can just blow you off the court if he's having a good day. Plus, Nadal was tougher for Federer when he was younger in the 2000's. Once he slowed down in the 2010's, the H2H turned around.
@dj_m19
@dj_m19 2 года назад
@@sup9542 the H2H turned around because Nadal was riddled with injuries and they stopped meeting on clay, because Roger hasn't made it that far at RG or any other clay masters 1000 which isn't Nadal's fault. Out of their last 11 matches, only 1 was on clay. We're talking 8 years of h2h here, they've only played each other on clay ONCE in the last 8 years. Just goes to show you how nonexistent Roger is on clay. If Roger was making semi finals and finals nowadays like he was back in 2004-2005 onwards, Nadal would've kept dominating him in H2H.
