White noise is a high-pitched noise with a constant power of a signal in the frequency band. What sounds complicated can also be easily explained: It sounds similar to a waterfall, or as if no station is tuned on a radio. So it helps the brain to ignore the unpleasant frequencies, i.e. background noise. Therefore, the noise is said to have a calming effect and to relieve headaches and migraines. White noise is also used very specifically in psychoacoustics to treat tinnitus but also to reduce stress and increase concentration.
Listening with good speakers or headphones on low volume recommended. Smartphone speakers usually can not reproduce the whole frequency spectrum, especially the lower notes.
