The purging and pressurization protection technique, known as “Ex p”, is used for electrical equipment to be installed and used in Zone 1, 2, 21 and 22 hazardous locations. This technique is commonly used to prevent ignition when electrical devices are installed in gas-explosive (Zone 1 and 2) or dust-explosive (Zone 21 and 22) environments. Purging and pressurization involves keeping the flammable substance (the gas or dust) away from the source of ignition (thermal or electrical).
