Every day I try to learn more about my religion and faith. Thanks to Allah today it's easy to get knowledge but this video is for me equivalent to a week of research. In a very short time, she talks about a lot of different important things but she says it all. She has a very peaceful way to say important things in a simple way mashallah. I am a member of an interfaith group and inshallah I will present her video in our next meeting. I am sure it will open plenty of topics of discussion.
This is really an interesting talk on interesting topic. Definition of "our own choices" whether as individuals or collectively as community. I guess this helps me to assess what my own definition is and also to understand others. Also, i love the points brought by Dr Mattson from the book "Paradox of Choice".
Some great points made here especially regarding her analysis of choice in the end and relating it to freedom in islam and overall. Started slow, but pick up quite nicely towards the end. Bravo Ingrid.

Thank you for posting Dr, Ingrid Mattson's lecture here. I have a complaint, and perhaps it should be directed at RU-vid itself, but as started this video, I was forced to sit through a Mormon advertisement. I don't know what RU-vid's advertising policy is, but I found this prosthetyzing to be in poor taste. I am just one person with my opinion here, but I trust the ICNA might have something to say about this.
I believe you are referring the verse that says "and those whom your right hand possess." Well, during wartime when the enemy is captured, back in the days when there were no prison system, one will have two choices, either killled the captives or have them lived with others with dignity and respect in their homes. Which one would you preferred?
Islam isnt just about d 5 pillars & d commandments, coz d purpose is simply for a guidance to live on this world, do it as u re able to perform & leave it as your own will.. most importantly is inside spiritual obligation between u & d almighty (6 pillars).. combination of both & understand it u will find simplicity, purity & balance.

MashAllah i agree with u sister about many of the points you gave. I think we should look at people who have less than ourselves, as prophet muhammad peace be upon him said. I understand why Prophet muhammad said this, because, we will form a dislike to ourselves if we are always looking at people who are better than us. I also agree with the point u made a majority rule, and agreeing to what the community decides for as a whole, this the way, even if its against our own ideas

these type of quetions are asked mostly by people who are not looking for answers but rather for faults and incorect criticism if you are trully seeking an answer to such an outragous matter then read the real facts or quit asking for reasons why you should hate islam and muslims but rather just hate dont look for excuses
"Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve." Quran 2:62. We do not believe that. And since the word "Alllah" is very misunderstood by non muslims. It simply means God. Jesus did not say "Father" He said "Ellah" as he spoke aramaic very close to arabic which is why christians say hallelujah

Aisha, the wife of Muhammad PBUH was giving explanations and guiding muslims after the death of the prophet. She was a woman of high intellect and had great understanding of islam. You have no idea what you are talking about.
once I met a Japanese professor, expert in protein science and bioinformatics. To my surprise he had accepted Islam and was Muslim. I asked him about his wife. He told me I am living with my wife (non Muslim) with this verse from Quran. Don't do useless arguments with non believers. Just deliver the message. if agree its OK, if not tell them, FOR IS YOUR RELIGION AND FOR ME IS MY. And for you again: The same Quran guide some one and misguide some. Enjoy your believe.

Can you please quote me in which verse in Quran says women should not giving public lectures to both men and women?Prophet's wife Aisha herself was a active educator and played key role to deliver teaching of Hadith. She didn't just speak to women, but women and men, young and old. Allah ordered women to be modest. Dr. Mattson was wearing very modest and giving a very serious topic. please don't limit women to do their good.
quran is full of scientific miracles which r described in such detail that Dr. Maurice Buchall stated "after investigating evidence from the quran ,i have come to the conclusion that i have no doubt in believing that this book is from the creator of our earth"might wanna check it out.
You are taking it completely out of context. He was busy and the man was continuosly interrupting him. This ayah in fact, demonstrates how amazing he was-such a small flaw and he was called out for it by Allah. It shows the high standard he was held to.
@karlsmith00 I am a converted women too and I am very high educated (lol). Well I rather be dumb (as you say) than being seen as an object by men. Btw I acted like you too before I became a muslima, so I don't blame you for thinking this way ;-). Women have a very high place in islam especially mothers, even I was shocked when I find that out. So I suggest you should read the Quran or ask Muslims who know alot about islam. Pls, don't judge Islam by the actions ppl do.
Quran (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"

The actual final will of prophet Muhammed(dua) should be read by each muslim1) It is in the quran surah 2 ayat 180 that you must leave one 2) after reading the will of prophet muhammed(dua) it is a statement that will keep the ummah from going astray. You can read the final will of prophet Muhammed(dua) to see what the real islam is and why its important to not follow any of the wrong 72 sects. I think you should read more about the Qur´an my friend. It is a very deep and complex religion that talks about every aspect of a human´s life. As we all know, life is never black and white, and that is why Islam provides us with the support to help us act in even the most unimaginable of situations. It is a beautiful religion. Life, however, can deprive us of our rights and canbe unfair, so it teaches us to be strong as well, but you must know the context and learn it fully. Good luck friend:)

Intelligent and wise reply from a wise woman, mashallah. While the Prophet's wives were ordered by Allah to speak behind a curtain with unrelated men - "And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. " (33:53) - , such instructions have been specifically laid out in the Qur'an for Ummahat-al-Mo'mineen and not on all the Muslim women. and where in the Quran does Allah mention freedom or the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah salAllahu alayhi wa salam? Does she know the reason why is not mentioned? mohamad didnt live really but he suffered badly every second of that time & its recored it in sahih bokhari how he suffer that ayesha was saying i never seen such sorrow. did he knew that is happening to him? NO did he wish to die? NO now read ur (Quran 69:44 /69:45/ 69:46) it say god will kill mohamad if make up false saying..!! then in sahih bokhari in many place it explain that he died so sorrowful. can u tell me why would God talk like that to him who is complete to u ??
All prophets were males, that comes back to the wisdom of Allah, & personally i don't think a female would tolerate the pressures & torrments of prophet hood. However the women covering faces being obligatory.. i disagree because in the Quran if you look it requires women to cover the hair and the neck thou face and hands are permissible wAllahu A'lam.. thou different scholars have made different fatwas according to their researches thats why some say obligatory others don't salam aleykum

I didnt say that reciting the Quraan is ""harram"" rather I mean to say that reciting in Public is not a wise lady act.It is like the person who is watching can also be indlugded in Zina and for that you are also responcible. Let me tell you . When prophet Moses went to mountain Sina and was there for forty days. There was a person name Samry, he made a calf from gold, he collected from the people. long story. In the absence of Prophet Moses, in short time, people forget about true God and worshiping him. In thousands When Moses returned and saw his people. You know what God commanded Moses and the people were punished. Everyday humans are dying. We can say God is not merciful cause he is killing his humans?
And, do you think you are being rational just because you argue from scientific point of view. Then, why do you think greatest scientist of their times, Newton, Einstein and Euler were religious. I don't think they were blind. What many people have in their quest to learning more about universe is pride. Originally they think they know everything, and they don't need God. But those who are smartest and are able to get to the end of the quest, realize that there actually is God.
Look at the difference between the comments you Athiests make and the comments Muslims make. See the difference? No? Well, I do. We are much more humble, patient, tolerant, and respectful towards one another, we (usually) don´t insult your beliefs or your views, that is the way of Islam. What is the way of Athiesm? showing everyone how superiour you are to them? Belitteling others to gratify yourself?
